Indy in Revue A Playgrounding Guide
A Playgrounding Guide
Indy in Revue is a dramatic account of our city's history, chronicling the major events of its development from 1820 to the present. The production covers the areas of art, literature, history, music, politics, business, social issues, race, religion and most of the other elements involved in the creation of a major city. The purpose of Indy in Revue is to educate students about the Hoosier capital's history as well as to promote within our younger generation a sense of community and appreciation of heritage. This study guide is a concise overview of Indy in Revue , and it should be helpful in preparing for the performance as well as guiding follow-up discussion.
Pre-Performance Study/Discussion Questions
The following questions will be helpful in preparing for Indy in Revue and may be used for brief writing exercises or for classroom discussions.
  • What significant people do you know who contribute to the Indianapolis community and how have they done so? Perhaps it is a parent, a teacher, a friend, or a neighbor. A contribution canand doescome from all.

    The Tom Archia Discography
Latest update: September 10, 2004 "Texas Tenors" occupy a well-defined niche in the worlds of jazz and blues. The virtues of Herschel Evans, Illinois Jacquet, Arnett Cobb, and Booker Ervin have been sung loudly and often. Some even remember John Hardee, James Clay, or Marcel Ivery. But little has been said about Tom Archia; this is the first full-length article ever written about him. As a great blues player, an instantly recognizable soloist, and the only Texas Tenor to have taken his inspiration straight from Lester Young, Tom Archia deserves better. Thanks to Johnnie Mae Walton, Tom Archia's first cousin, we have learned something about his family background. The Archie family (as most of them have always spelled the name) came from the area around Hempstead, Texas (a small town about 50 miles northwest of Houston). In fact, there were several different Archie families (unrelated) around Hempstead and Bellville. Ernest Archie Sr. was born near Hempstead in the late 1880s or early 1890s; his father, Nathan Archie, who died in 1910, was a farmer who had been born into slavery. Nathan's wife Virginia Archie (1862 - 1932) had a major impact on her family's destiny. Born in Mississippi, she arrived in Waller County, Texas while still a child. She and Nathan had 14 children. Eleven of them (6 daughters and 5 sons) were still alive at the time of her death. According to one obituary, "Her husband having died in later years leaving her with a number of small children on their farm, with confidence and perseverance she carried on; besides educating all of her children, she greatly increased her holdings. At her death she was reported to be one of the largest land holders in Waller County." Another obituary noted that she was "one of the leading watermelon growers of the state." After she died suddenly while attending an event at Odd Fellows' Hall on February 5, 1932, Black newspapers throughout the state of Texas ran obituaries. An item in the

    The Greg Hatza ORGANization
(Palmetto) Naturally, Hatza is well steeped in the blue bop of Jimmy Smith. But, like Defrancesco, he seems to gravitate more toward the rapid-fire soulfulness of Charles Earland and the modal funk of Lonnie Smith (though he avoids the otherworlds of Larry Young that Defrancesco sometimes explores). The result on this set, the third of his Palmetto releases, is a pleasing program of solid riffing on catchy jazz rooted in soul, gospel, funk and blues. The Hatza Organization is a solid quartet, featuring returning guitarist Paul Bollenbeck (still poised to fulfill his promise, but good even in his Scofield bag), tenor man Ralph Lalama and drummer Dennis Chambers. The best moments are upbeat: the gospel funk of "Stand Up and Be Counted," the soul strut of "Change the World" and the mode supreme of "Trane Station." The remaining half dozen tunes have an attractive appeal that will sound familiar to those who enjoyed Hatza’s previous

    EXCERPTS
    FROM A FAMILY MEMOIR
    SAM
Notes after conversation with my half-brother, Otho Eskin We do not know when nor at what age Morris Eskin, doubtless fleeing pogroms, emigrated from the Russian empire, probably from Smolensk (or maybe Kiev: Smolensk was outside the Pale, whereas Kiev was just inside). His name was probably Moishe, which was edited into "Morris." Let us say he was in his twenties and came with a wife, though he might have been fifteen and married here. It was most likely in the 1880's, perhaps the early '90's. The port of entry was most likely, and classically, New York, but he wandered south a ways and lived in Washington for some time, until moving to Baltimore in 1898, shortly after the birth of Sam.
Ed. Notes. The Thirteenth Census of the United States: 1910 of Baltimore, MD. Reports the year of immigration for Morris as 1890 and "Na" for naturalized, and his age given as 35. Rachel, aged 33 is shown as his wife, the year of immigration as 1895. Each of their places of birth shown as "Russ-Great Russian". The numbers of years of marriage is shown as 11. Morris' occupation is shown as Engineer/Locomotive and her occupation as Saleslady, Grocery store. Both sons were enumerated as being born in the District of Columbia, with Sam being listed as Samuel aged 11, and his brother as James aged 9. They were living at 1734 Bell Avenue, Baltimore. Their Maryland born neighbors' occupations were listed as Front Matcher/Shirt Factory, Fireman/Locomotive, Dispatcher/Railroad, Carpenter/Railroad shop, and Conductor/Steam Railroad.]

    King David's Blues Band
King David's Blues Band are a popular regular item on the London Blues scene playing regularly at the West End's "12 bar Club, the "Nothing But The Blues" Bar and the Station Tavern in Notting Hill, all well known London Blues venues. The band's rhythm section has Brian Nevill on drums and Matt Radford on double bass. They spent many years with Big Joe Louis and his Rhythm Kings and have also played with U.S. Blues legends Lazy Lester and Homesick James. The front man for the trio is Dave Purdy; he is no stranger to Big Joe Louis either! This outfit gives lively, very lively, 1940's, 1950's style down-home blues, with the swinging-est rhythm section behind some nifty guitar work and bluesy vocals.
    Roger Carey's Band
Roger Carey started in rock bands and has incorporated early and recent influences into line up. The Jazz influence comes from work with Pete Burden, Al Casey and Slim Gaillard in earlier years, and Mark Edwards, John Etheridge and Dick Pearce in later years. Playing with blues artists Roger Hubbard, Louis Turpin, The Jukes and touring with the Legendary Long John Baldry left an inevitable trace of the blues. His long time as bassist with Liane Carroll, with whom he played numerous weeks at Ronnie Scotts and made 3 CD's, his two years in "Field of Blue" with singer Jacqueline Dankworth all added to his experience. Roger sings, plays guitar and bass in this band who were recently described as having "phenomenal musicianship combined with idiosyncratic material".
