Lonnie was born on Thompson Avenue on the 26th November 1940 in Kansas City, Kansas, U.S.A. His real name should have been Godby, however as his fathers parents were separated, his grandmother used her maiden name which was Cook. Lonnie's father had promised his wife to give Lonnie his doctor's middle name, but that would have made him Lonnie Cook Cook, so they used the doctors surname instead, which was Thurman.
As a singer, Lonnie sang lead for various Doo Wop groups including the Fandangos, Flamingoes, Five Stars, and Del Rayes, in Kansas City, between 1953-1960. Theme Song: "Strange Cargo" (co-composed with Ray McKinley)
Here's a photo of pianist Freddie Slack , and another of Freddie , who was featured with the Jimmy Dorsey Orch, and then joined 'The Will Bradley-Ray McKinley Orch.'
Soon after moving to Chicago in 1927, he switched, from the Drums to piano. In these early years, Slack worked with Johnny Tobin's orch. In 1931, he moved to Los Angeles, CA, where he worked with bands led by Henry Halsted, Earl Burtnett, Archie Rosate and Lennie Hayton. During 1934-36, he worked with Ben Pollack's band, and from 1936-'39 was part of Jimmy Dorsey's band, where he worked alongside drummer Ray McKinley. Since Freddie had started his career as a drummer, there was a natural affinity between the two men. Between 1939-'41, he was the pianist for The Will Bradley - Ray McKinley Orchestra, so named because both men were partners in the new venture. Slack drew much public acclaim for his piano work on the band's famous recording of "Beat Me Daddy, Eight To The Bar", as well as on many other Bradley recordings. These helped launch a boogie-woogie fad. (Slack was also heard on some Big Joe Turner recordings during this time, and with another 'Blues Man' - "T Bone" Walker, later during Slack's Capitol Records days.) Early in 1941, Slack left the Bradley-McKinley band and his place was briefly taken by Bob Holt, from Worcester, MA., before being replaced by Billy Maxted.

Overview
Here's a photograph (courtesy Mr. Peter Doyle) of the Tommy Reynolds , who is best remembered today as a producer of radio shows (musicals) in Los Angeles, CA, and in New York City. Tommy formed his first orchestra in 1938. His orchestras though loud and very enthusiastic never garnered great public acclaim. Some of the band members in 1938 and part of '39 were, Tino Isgro, tenor saxophone, Whitey Thomas, trumpet, Tony Picciotto, trumpet, Benny West, and Bobby Boon. Tino Isgro went on to play with Johnny Long (and can be seen in the film 'Hit The Ice'), also with Glen Gray, Teddy Powell, Dick Rogers, and in 1945, with Jimmy Dorsey. (Many more after Dorsey.) At the start of 1939, Whitey Thomas went with Isham Jones. He later joined the Glenn Miller Air Force Band. Whitey now (1998) lives in Mossy Rock, Washington.
The above information on Tommy Reynolds was graciously supplied in private coorespondence by Ms. Tina Isgro Thompson. It was her father Tino Isgro who was with the band from 1938 to 1940.

Leon Haywood - Rivers Invitation
Leon Haywood
Leon Haywood is a familiar name to soul fans, mainly for his work as a vocalist. His mid-60’s hit on Decca, ‘It’s Got To Be Mellow’ is a sweet soul classic. What’s less familiar (and in many ways better) is his work as an instrumentalist.
Haywood (who was born in Texas but did most of his recording on the West coast) started out playing in Sam Cooke’s band and went on to record for a number of labels (including Fat Fish Convoy and Decca ) as both an organist/pianist and vocalist.
During the mid 60’s, in addition to work under his own name, Haywood played organ on 45s for the Packers and
His own instrumental work often appeared on the b-sides of his 45s (‘Soul Cargo’ on Fat Fish, ‘

The first 14 tracks here were recorded for Imperial under the guidance of the great New Orleans producer Dave Bartholomew - 8 of them not originally issued. VARIOUS ARTISTS Document DOCD 5169 Country Blues Collector's Items (1924-28) 25 tracks, 74 min., recommended. The cover boasts that this CD features the complete recorded works of Ed Andrews, Lewis Black, Kid Brown, Sammy Brown, Emery Glen, Johnny Head, T.C. Johnson, "Blue Coat" Tom Nelson, "Mooch" Richardson, and somebody named Porkchop. If you note that none of these names are regularly invoked by fans, you're getting the idea. Recorded between 1924 and 1928, these rarities are a hodgepodge of blues, rag, and songster styles. None are immediate knockouts, but the cumulative effect of hearing these forgotten performers 60-odd years after the fact is the feeling that the breadth of pre-war blues, especially the Memphis variety espoused by Richardson (with Lonnie Johnson) is a long way from being exhausted. All these performers are mysteries; all these performances are spooky in one way or another. Sound quality is adequate. (JG)

Storyville† STCD 8049 Recorded live in Chicago in 1975, shortly after the Myers brothers reformed the group after laying off for more than a decade, this CD includes guest appearances by guitarists Joe Carter and Bobby King, singer Johnny Drummer (who does a terrific turn on "Sweet Home Chicago") and others. Louis Myers’ guitar is alternately sharp and greasy, laying down fleet lines on "You’re the One" and stinging staccato on "Don’t Throw Your Love on Me So Strong," and Dave Myers’ large and to-the-point bass playing is just about perfect throughout. Drummer Fred Below, "king of the Chicago beat," is rock steady and typically graceful, although Marcelle Morgantini’s vocal-biased recording is only fair and most of the band’s subtlety is lost in the murk.
