Dominic John (piano) - 25 November 2001
Born in 1980, British pianist Dominic John began piano lessons with his mother. A versatile musician, he has given numerous solo performances as well as being a member of various chamber ensembles and accompanist to a wide variety of instrumentalists and singers. Venues have included St. John’s Smith Square, St. Martin-in-the-Fields and the Barbican Hall, where he gave the European Premiere of an early piano work by Stephen Sondheim in two special celebration events which were recorded on TER Classics. This year he received first prize in the 22nd Robert William and Florence Amy Brant Piano Competition and was the winner of the prestigious Chappell Gold Medal piano prize at the Royal College of Music. Other prizes have included Worthing Concerto Competition and Sheffield ISM Piano Competition. He has taken part in many masterclasses, notably those by Stephen Hough and Pierre Laurent Aimard. This provided an opportunity to concentrate on slightly unusual areas of the piano repertoire: the works of York Bowen and Ligeti in particular. In 2001, he appeared as soloist in Liszt’s Piano Concerto No. 1 at the Chichester Festival and was one of the pianists in Stravinsky’s Les Noces at the Bath International Music Festival. Next March he will be performing Gershwin’s Rhapsody in Blue and Litolff’s Sherzo with the Alassio Concerto Orchestra in Worthing. He is currently completing his Undergraduate study at the Royal College of Music, where he is a foundation scholar, studying with John Barstow.

OF HARMONY AND INVENTION - barbican
Those who left behind the balmy July evening and headed inside the Barbican Hall last Thursday (July 29) were in for a treat as Harry Christophers directed The Symphony of Harmony and Invention and singers The Sixteen as part of the Mostly Mozart series.
Sopranos Elizabeth Cragg and Gillian Keith, tenor Matthew Beale and bass Eric Owens joined Zazzo, taking the other solo parts, and all were beautifully matched.
Harry Christophers clearly felt the driving pulse throughout and kept the pace moving through a variety of tempi, keeping singers and players with him at every corner. The Sixteen sang with depth, vitality and impeccable intonation throughout, allowing the soloists, particularly Elizabeth Cragg to show subtlety and delicacy in highest registers.
Elizabeth Cragg transformed some of the light versatility of the Handel into a more robust, sustained solo line.

The ensemble was reformed six years ago and has performed concerts in England and Wales, including concerts in Oxford and London. Graham Mayger (flute) won a Foundation Scholarship to the Royal College of Music, then a French Government Scholarship to study in Paris with Jean Pierre Rampal. "Take Five" is all longing and suggestion and seduction. "The More I See You" is considered by Mary to be the definitive song on the album. Other highlights include the three original love songs by Mary, songs that, once heard by other singers, I expect will be sung more and more. You And I is a virtual suite of love songs, a seamless tapestry of romance. "You And I is about intimacy, devotion, seduction, passion and love. It's you and I from beginning to end." It's also the first album from the first singer signed to Arkadia Jazz and one hopes, just the first of many to come from this uniquely lyrical jazz singer, Mary Pearson.

Obituary: James Walker 1929-2002
The composer and pianist James Walker played an important part in the University’s music-making for forty years. As a founder member of the Archduke Trio, he gave his first concert at the University in October 1961 and his last in May 2002. His death on October 11, at his home in Stratford-upon-Avon, marks the end of an era. Although James was too ill to play at a scheduled concert two days before his death, clarinettist Catherine Spencer and pianist Sam Haywood - musicians introduced to me by James several years earlier - stood in, at short notice, and included in their programme James Walker’s Second Clarinet Sonatina, the recording of which was played to James two days later. The Archduke Trio - Kenneth Page, violin (who died in January 1999); Oliver Brookes, cello; and James Walker - was appointed to the University in 1964. As well as performing most of the piano trio repertoire and a series of trios written especially for the ‘Archduke’ by composers associated with the University, James headed a team of piano instructors until the Music Department as an academic entity closed in 1991. He enjoyed teaching and was an inspiration to many, though, rightly, he was less than tolerant towards students who arrived unprepared!

by Eric Myers The pianist Tim Stevens, along with Nick Haywood (bass) and Tony Floyd (drums), began his sole performance at the Wangaratta festival at 4 pm on Sunday, November 5. Little did he, or anyone else, imagine that, about an hour later, he would be part of an Australian contingent invited to perform at the next Umbria Jazz festival (in July, 2001). Carlo Pagnotta was mesmerised immediately by Tim Stevens's work: his touch on the piano, his lyricism, his harmonic command, his intelligence, his taste. Pagnotta insisted on meeting Tim after the performance and, on receiving two copies of the Browne Haywood Stevens CD Sudden In a Shaft of Sunlight , announced that, the following week in New York, he would give one CD to his friend Bruce Lundvall of Blue Note, and the other to Tommy Li Puma of Universal. Tim might be forgiven for feeling somewhat vindicated by Carlo Pagnotta's immediate interest in his music. 1999 had not been a very good year. Tim had made the short list of ten for the semi-finals of the 1999 piano competition at the Wangaratta National Jazz Awards, but did not make the final three. In the 1999 ARIA awards, Sudden In a Shaft of Sunlight made the short-list of five for the Best Australian Jazz Release (out of 33 nominations), but was edged out by the Andrew Speight Quartet's self-titled bop CD.
