Shostakovich withdrew his fourth symphony from rehearsal (a massive work scored for a 120-piece orchestra) in 1936 following the Pravda statement of 28th January of that year (believed by some to have been written by Stalin himself) condemning his opera Lady Macbeth of the Mtsensk District . However, he salvaged this two-piano transcription, and for the next 25 years it remained the only extant version of the symphony, until he reconstructed it and it was finally premiered on 30th December 1961.
