“Hayroudinoff’s performances are tender and brilliant, enhancing the music’s many facets with glowing tone, exquisite phrasing and an unerring sense of comic timing… If this disc is anything to go by, he’s a pianist out of the ordinary: he plays every note as if he simply loves it. More from him, please, Chandos!”

Biography home Russian pianist Rustem Hayroudinoff has been hailed as a musician of tremendous intelligence and insight across the globe from America to the Far East. Of his recent CD of Shostakovich’s Theatre Music, released by CHANDOS in April 2001, BBC Music Magazine stated: ‘Hayroudinoff’s performances are tender and brilliant, enhancing the music’s many facets with glowing tone, exquisite phrasing and an unerring sense of comic timing…he’s a pianist out of the ordinary: he plays every note as if he simply loves it.’ The magazine selected the disc as a CD of the Year. The Italian magazine Compact Disc Classics likewise acclaimed it as ‘an absolutely precious disc’. At the Vianna da Motta Competition 1997, where Hayroudinoff was a top prizewinner, the great Russian pianist Lazar Berman praised him as ‘a serious artist and master, whose emergence in today’s atmosphere of pseudo-artistic and shallow music-making is specially valuable and welcome.’ In 2000, András Schiff helped to arrange a recital for him at Hurstwood Farm, Kent, a venue devoted to piano recitals of the highest quality. Recently Hayroudinoff has received much encouragement from Murray Perahia and Vladimir Ashkenazy. Hayroudinoff’s performances have been broadcast on RTE (Ireland), SBS and ABC (Australia), WFMT-FM (USA), CBC Radio 2 (Canada), Swedish Radio Corporation, NDR (Germany), Television Network of Chicago, Russian National Radio, Classic FM

Dvorak Piano concerto/Violin concerto (with the BBC Philharmonic Orchestra, conductor Gianandrea Noseda, violinist James Ehnes):
Released on Chandos (catalogue number CHAN 10309) in May 2005. "It says much for the Russian pianist Rustem Hayroudinoff that he gives such a commanding performance of the Dvorak Piano Concerto…just as dazzling and just as electrically compelling. Hayroudinoff even more than Richter brings out the joyful, carefree quality of Dvorak's inspiration, demonstrating what a wonderful fund of good melodies it contains. The clarity of his articulation in the trickiest passagework is phenomenal, and his phrasing in the central Andante Sostenuto is limpidly beautiful, even warmer than that of Richter. …an outstanding modern version." ( Gramophone, July 2005 Shostakovich Symphony No.4, Op. 43 arranged by the composer for two pianos (with Colin Stone):
Released on Chandos (catalogue number CHAN 10296) in March 2005, this is a premiere recording in this version. "That this is a major Shostakovich release goes without saying, but, more than that, it will hopefully lead to frequent hearings, during the composer's centenary year and beyond, of what is here revealed as an absorbing and perceptive transcription." (International Record Review, May 2005) "Revelatory version of a spectacular 20th-century orchestral masterwork. Hayroudinoff and Stone impress with their knowledge of the score, giving a well-prepared, gutsy performance…"
(Gramophone, July 2005)

CHANDOS CHAN10309 A welcome release from the Chandos label of two of Canadian-born violin soloist James Ehnes is on fine form and makes strong claims for the score in an account that is easy to recommend though not particularly special. Ehnes plays with considerable refinement and sensitivity and there is much to be admired especially in the poetic interpretation of the Adagio. However, I would have preferred a touch more vitality and dash in the outer movements. The BBC Philharmonic Orchestra under Noseda provide a sympathetic partnership.

SUPRAPHON SU3774-2 Dvo ands it can seem diffuse and even long-winded. The finale begins somewhat awkwardly from the pianist, the repeated note too close to a stutter for comfort; yet the more fantastical elements later are lovingly dwelt-upon. There are some technical slips; it is live, after all, but you should be warned. A fair head of steam propels the performance towards the finishing line. The applause is rightly retained but this finale emerges as structurally diffuse. An interesting performance but not a first choice. One’s library should include both Richter and Aimard, ideally. Interestingly, there is another new version on Chandos that couples this work with the Violin Concerto (soloists being Rustem Hayroudinoff and James Ehnes, respectively). The Chandos performance is around the same place in the pecking order as the Supraphon, the latter perhaps having the edge because of the authentic Czech sound.
