Conrad Hansen was born on the 24th of November 1906, in Lippstadt in Westphalia. In 1920 he came to Berlin to study and two years later was accepted as a student of the great Edwin Fischer, untill 1930. Edwin Fischer, who had a busy concert schedule, asked Conrad to be his assistant and teach Fischer's students when he was on tour. So from 1935 on Hansen taught at the Berlin Municipal Conservatory (Berliner Musikhochschule, formerly Sternsches Konservatorium). After a very successful concert performance in 1940, commemorating Tchaikovsky's 100th birthday (April 25th), he was asked to record the Piano Concerto Op. 23 with

Susie Hansen - A Biography Electric violinist Susie Hansen plays Latin Jazz and Salsa. Hansen and her talented musicians have created an invigorating music that brings audiences to their feet, dancing in the aisles. With her driving electric violin in the forefront, Susie's Los Angeles-based band contains some of the finest musicians in LA. She and the band have been acclaimed by many critics, such as Phil Elwood from the San Francisco Examiner who describes her band this way: "Its a sizzling, swinging Salsa band. Hansen can solo as if her bow was afire. The whole room was jumpin for joy." The Chicago native has developed her own unique and exciting style by drawing on various forms of jazz and Latin music. She has created her own interpretation of traditional Cuban Charanga , a predecessor of Salsa which often features the violin, and has combined it with the ever-potent fire of Afro-Cuban rhythms and the compelling harmonies of straight-ahead jazz. She uses her violin as the lead instrument of the ensemble, creating a unique musical style that, according to Don Heckman of the Los Angeles Times, is as physically moving as it is intellectually stimulating. Her all-star band features George Balmaseda on lead vocals, Joe Rotondi on keyboards, Rene Camacho on vocals, among other great musicians.

He is currently principal oboist with both the Northwest Chamber Orchestra and the Northwest Sinfonietta; and he has also played first oboe with the Seattle Symphony, The Seattle Opera, and the Pacific Northwest Ballet orchestras. Of his 1996 performance of Bach's Double Concerto with Joseph Silverstein and the Northwest Chamber Orchestra, the Seattle Times reported that "Oboist Dan Williams poured out waves of beautiful, even tone with considerable musicality." Mr. Williams served as principal oboist of the Honolulu Symphony Orchestra in its 1992-1993 season and previously held the same positions in the Harrisburg (PA) and Binghamton (NY) Symphonies. Mr. Williams currently teaches oboe at Western Washington University, and teaches chamber music at the Seattle Conservatory of Music. He has also served on the faculty of the University of Washington School of Music. A native of Seattle, Dan Williams received his musical training at the Juilliard School and at Western Washington University, where he was voted Most Outstanding Graduate by the music faculty.

2005-2006 Season The Symphonic Orchestra Concerts The String Quartet Bonus Concerts The Symphonic Orchestra Concerts Fall Concert - November 15 The Americans Thomas Alexander, Piano Buckaroo Holiday by Copland Selections from 'Porgy and Bess' by Gershwin Rhapsody in Blue by Gershwin Symphony No. 2 (Romantic) by Hanson Rhythm is the name of game as the orchestra begins the season with toe-tapping syncopations from Copland and Gershwin. While the Romantic Symphony by Hanson was written in 1930, the elegant melodies and lush harmonies remind one of the great romanticists of the19th century. Yet the work has a distinctly American character. Born in Amsterdam in 1980, pianist, Thomas Alexander moved to Northwest Iowa in 2003. At the age of eleven he started piano lessons. During the following years he studied with several teachers and was accepted into the young talent department of the Sweelinck Conservatory of Amsterdam in September of 1994. While there, he studied with Marcel Baudet, who is known for his work with talented children. He then continued to study in Sweelinck to earn to his Ph.D. in May 2002. Thomas now gives recitals in which he plays both classical and improvisational music as requested by the audience. Alexander has performed in Germany, Belgium, Switzerland, Italy, France, England and the United States and we are delighted to showcase his unique talents with NISO.

Listeners new to Hanson's music will find this CD a felicitous introduction to this accessible American composer. - Robert Moon MAHLER: Symphony No. 2 "Resurrection" - Emiko Suga, sop./Nathalie Stutzmann, contralto/Shinyukai Choir/Saito Kinen Orchestra/Seiji Ozawa - Sony Classical S2K 89374: This very exciting performance was recorded just a year ago in Tokyo before a live audience. There's no information provided on the orchestra or choir - except that Ozawa founded the orchestra - but damn they're good. Sometimes accused of sounding asleep on the podium, Ozawa is in no danger of such a criticism here - this is a white-hot , passionate, performance that reminded me of some of the nearly over-the-top ecstatic Bernstein treatments of Mahler. While I couldn't put my hands on my copy of the Gilbert Kaplan Mahler Second for comparison, I think even it is surpassed by this new version. Sound is among the best I've heard from such large symphonic-choral forces. The Urlicht finale soars to higher and higher levels of heavenly rapture, and both soloists may be unknown but are superb. While a few of these pieces have appeared on various (pirate) labels, the bulk make their debut, like his 1950 exciting rendition of Mendelssohn's formidable Overture to Athalia, Op. 74, a work hardly known except for the 'War March of the Priests' inscribed by Mengelberg three generations ago. Virtually all of the repertory enjoys Schuricht's lean, elastic approach, suave, pointed, but still capable of velocity and sensuality, much in Weingartner mold and even more richly textured. The first two discs present sections from two specific concerts, those of 29 April 1950 and 5 November 1950, the latter's featuring cellist Enrico Mainardi in the old-standard version of Haydn's D Major Concerto. From that same evening comes Reger's ingenuous set of variants on Mozart's Sonata, K. 331 with its sonic patina lifted right out of Brahms.
