    24. Phil Kelly Music - Reviews
trumpeter Vern Seilert and pianist John hansen on You and the Night, Ramsay, thomas, pianist Butch Nordal, trombonist Gary Shutes, alto Travis Ranney
    http://www.philkellymusic.com/reviews.html
Convergence Zone by Bill Barton, Earshot Jazz Magazine Composer/arranger Phil Kelly’s new big band CD is truly a convergence zone between "tight" and "loose." Combining a stellar array of first-call studio players and smokin’ jazz soloists from the Pacific Northwest with a few of his old friends from the Los Angeles, New York and Nashville scenes, Kelly has come up with a recording that combines consummate craftsmanship with flat-out fun in a most engaging fashion. Kelly retired to the northern reaches of the Puget Sound area around five years ago after a 30+-year career in film, TV and advertising. The last time he wrote charts for a large jazz ensemble was in the mid-1970s, on two superb but now sadly out of print albums with trombonist Bill Watrous, Manhattan Wildlife Refuge from 1974 and Tiger of San Pedro from 1975. 3,500 "clients" later, plus numerous arrangements for Doc Severinsen – both with the Tonight Show orchestra and for symphonic appearances – the Dallas, Houston, North Carolina and Vermont Symphony pops series, and an extended association with the Fort Worth Symphony beginning in 1975, he has returned to his first love with this project. Students at the Bud Shank Port Townsend Jazz Workshop have profited from his expertise as a clinician and big band coach in 2002 and 2003.

St. Thomas, Let's Grow Together: The Comeback of St. Thomas (Racing Junior)

As unlikely as it sounds, St. Thomas, aka Thomas Hansen, is probably Norway's best-known alt-country musician. Lest you think it's a title given without significant forethought, listen to his fourth full-length, Let's Grow Together . Although it's billed as a comeback album, more than anything it's a step in a new direction. Where his earlier albums, like 2001's I'm Coming Home were heavy on the twang, with "Let's Grow" he has spread his wings to embrace a wider range of styles. He clearly fits in the same section as the nouveau folk of non-rockers like Devendra Banhart and Sufjan Stevens, but Thomas has a charming goofiness that brings to mind the more experimental leanings of later Beach Boys recordings. "Let's Grow" is full of cheery tunes with delightfully surreal lyrics. Since you won't be hearing this on the radio anytime soon, do yourself a favor and head over to the Racing Junior online store and plunk down your 9.5 Norweigan kroner (US$1.37 as of this writing) for track 13, "The Red Book". Let it sink into your subconscious for a little while, and I'll see you outside the record store when "Let's Grow Together" is finally released stateside.

    About the academic procession
Commencements from the past Bates College Sesquicentennial President Hansen, I am honored to present Thomas Jefferson Anderson. Music has the power to transport and invigorate us, to evoke sorrow and elation, to cross the boundaries of time and culture. In the right hands, music is also a persuasive form of political expression. Today we honor Thomas Jefferson Anderson, whose compositions are at once personal evocations and reflections of the human condition. For his artistic authenticity, his inspired teaching over many decades, his efforts to gain greater recognition for African American composers, and his call to honor all musical traditions, I present Thomas Jefferson Anderson for the degree Doctor of Music. President's conferral: Thomas Jefferson Anderson, you are a learned and spirited composer, a deft synthesizer of traditions, and an advocate for pluralism in the classical music canon. Therefore, by the authority vested in me by the Board of Trustees, I hereby confer upon you the Degree of Doctor of Music, with all the rights, privileges, and responsibilities which here and everywhere pertain to this degree.
