September 20 and 21, Sex Mob , the echt post-mod quartet fronted by slide-trumpeter Steven Bernstein, arrive at the R-Bar with their typically downtown NYC mix of Duke Ellington, James Bond themes, and Viennese waltzes as well as originals. Tenor-saxophonist Belden is best known as a producer of reissues, including several by Miles Davis; here he works the groove with organist Adam Scone, guitarist Al Street, and drummer Bruce Jackson. • IDENTIFICATION AND BIO:
Composer, Singer, Vocal Accompanist and Coach Carter "Toby" Hall led a musical life, primarily as an accompanist and vocal coach in New York, but flowered into a composer during his last years in Hartford, Connecticut. Hall briefly studied music at the University of Hartford before dropping out and moving to Boston where he got his start as a lounge performer. He moved to New York in the early 1970s and became a coach at the Metropolitan Opera Studio, then advanced to playing final piano-rehearsal for the main-house productions, accompanying major singers. He also performed at the Public Theater. In 1989, already aware of his diagnosis with HIV/AIDS, Hall moved back to Hartford. He quickly took a teaching post at the Hartford Camerata Conservatory but later joined the faculty of the Hartt School at the University of Hartford, where he taught piano and voice. He also became involved in the music program of the Asylum Hill Congregational Church, first as a choir member, later as the de facto composer-in-residence. For the church he wrote a series of seven church anthems, several written for feast days and other occasions, and also the full-length liturgical drama The Eighth Day Hartford Courant In 1993 Hall wrote a letter to composer John Corigliano, after having been moved by hearing his Symphony No. 1. Hall wrote of his newfound joy in life and enthusiasm in composing music for the Asylum Hill Church:

EAST BRUNSWICK — How do you get to Carnegie Hall? Just ask 11-year-old pianist Anita Chen. Anita, a sixth-grader at the Hammarskjold Elementary School, will be performing eight concerts at the famed New York City concert hall from May 20-23 as a result of the reputation she has quickly garnered. Anita, who also plays violin, earned that reputation in part by passing auditions and attending the Juilliard School’s precollege division when she was 7 years old, according to her father, Steve. Chen said his daughter was accepted to the prestigious program because of her piano prowess, and has studied the instrument for four years with renowned teacher Antonio Fermin. Fermin, the manager of Carnegie Hall’s elementary school programs, was so impressed that he helped her get invited to the Carnegie Hall shows. "She just received a letter from Carnegie Hall through Juilliard," Steve said.

Nissman has earned a reputation as one of the "last pianists in the grand Romantic tradition of Liszt, Rachmaninoff and Rubenstein," ( New York Times ). Her international career was launched in 1971 with a highly acclaimed European tour, personally sponsored by Eugene Ormandy. In Europe, Nissman has appeared as a soloist with the London Philharmonic, the Royal Philharmonic, the BBC Symphony, the Rotterdam Philharmonic and the Munich Philharmonic. In the United States, she has appeared with the New York Philharmonic, the Pittsburgh Symphony, the St. Louis Symphony and the the Philadelphia Orchestra. In 1989, she made history by becoming the first pianist ever to perform the complete piano sonatas of Sergei Prokofiev in a series of three performances in New York and London. The Mystical Arts of Tibet: Sacred Music Sacred Dance will follow on October 6 in Hensel Hall. The Drepung Loseling Monks of Tibet, whose concerts include long Himalayan horns and elaborate costumes, draw from traditional temple music and masked dances in a performance believed to generate energies conducive to world harmony. Their repertoire of masked dances will include the Deer Dance, Dance of the Sacred Buffalo, Skeleton Dance and the Dance of the Rainbow Beings. "If a mountain could sing, it would sing like a Tibetan monk," wrote Richard Oslund of the

    What the critics say:
"The music originates almost exclusively from the pen of Hall and is filled with lyrical beauty...Newsome produces a mellow and sensitive tone on soprano that meshes with Ridl's piano style to yield an alluring mixture of flowing tones. Newsome and Ridl can kick the music into a higher gear, but it never loses its contemplative direction...Hall is agile and inventive in simultaneously expressing freedom and structure.
There is something about the combination of bass and violin that gives music a very appealing sound...Hall guides a stimulating course on this recording while varying the instrumentation in an alluring way. His music has much to offer." -

Biography "You could have heard a pin drop. Steven Osborne's power over the hall was absolute...the atmosphere was spellbound."

    Daily Telegraph, February 2004
Steven Osborne has emerged at the forefront of young British pianists. He embraces a wide range of style and repertoire from the mainstream works of Beethoven, Mozart and Brahms to the rarefied worlds of Messiaen, Tippett and Alkan. His recital programmes are carefully crafted and he is idiomatic in his approach to contrasting works. As Time Out recently noted “He can produce pyrotechnics effortlessly, but never forgets the depths beneath the brilliance”.
In the UK he works regularly with the major orchestras including the Philharmonia, London Philharmonic, Royal Philharmonic, City of Birmingham Symphony, BBC Symphony, and the Hallé. His concerts are regularly broadcast by the BBC and he performs every year at the Wigmore Hall and at the Edinburgh Festival. He has made five appearances at the Proms, most recently in 2005 when he performed the Tippett Piano Concerto.
Concerto performances take Steven to orchestras all over the world including the NHK Symphony, Bergen Philharmonic, Munich Philharmonic, Finnish Radio Symphony, Salzberg Mozarteum and the NDR Sinfonieorchester Hannover. With these orchestras he has enjoyed collaborations with conductors including Christoph von Dohnanyi, Evgeny Svetlanov, Sir Charles Mackerras, Yan Pascal Tortelier, Andrew Litton, Alan Gilbert, Marin Alsop, Jukka-Pekka Saraste and Vassily Sinaisky.

Stephen Kovacevich Master Class (Beethoven Piano Sonatas) Queen Elizabeth Hall 11 January 2001 (PGW)
A large audience was privileged to eavesdrop upon Stephen Kovacevich , renowned Beethoven specialist, taking well equipped students through passages in Beethoven sonatas. His manner was gentle and kindly, but searching and demanding. He put his 'victims' at ease by establishing whether each felt nervous or confident, and made them think and articulate their aims in dialogue with him - "tell me what you might not have liked in how you played that?" - before suggesting his own preferred solutions and persuading them to try it differently, but leaving final choices to them. In an absorbing one and a half hour session without pause he explored the Appassionata with an Israeli student from the Royal Academy of Music in London (Inon Barnatan) and Op. 109 with a Japanese graduate of the capital's Royal College of Music (Mami Shikimori). Both were technically assured and knew the music so well that they could take up at will at any point as required - "we can work on a certain level" he assured them, and both responded well, changing articulation and tone easily (it is essential for master class candidates not to over-learn their pieces, so that they retain flexibility and are not so wedded to their settled way with the music as to be unable to experiment with new ideas). He wanted 'more sound' in the Appassionata's ff , finding the player at first 'too considerate, too musical'! The student explained that he was worried about being 'too aggressive'. There was detailed discussion of tempi.
