Story by Peggy Graham An Engaging Engagement:
Emmanuel Pahud, the Man with the Golden Flute
Hélène Grimaud, a Pianist with Force and Finesse
The Carlsen Center is fortunate to engage two artists who share a youthful, yet formidable approach to music. Emmanuel Pahud, flute, and Hélène Grimaud, piano, will perform in a musical double billing at 7 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 16, in Yardley Hall of the Carlsen Center at Johnson County Community College. A preconcert talk by Paul Laird, University of Kansas musicologist, begins at 7 p.m. The program will be Sonata for Flute and Piano by Poulenc; Sonata for Flute and Piano, Mozart; Air for Flute and Piano, Kernis; three Romances for Flute and Piano, Schumann; work for solo piano, Beethoven; and Partita in A for Solo Flute, Bach. Pahud has a golden touch as a flutist. He literally plays a 14-caret golden instrument, and the New York Times named him "the new flute sensation." Born in 1970, the Swiss-French flutist first achieved international prominence as principal flutist of the Berlin Philharmonic, stepping down from that position in September 2000 after seven years and now once again rejoining the acclaimed orchestra. A highly regarded solo artist and chamber musician, he now appears in recital and with orchestras throughout Europe, North America and Asia. Signed to an exclusive contract with EMI Classics in 1996, Pahud has made recordings of music ranging from Haydn and Mozart to Dutilleux and Messiaen.

Program Notes: The Concert at a Glance
Two Russian master pianists who also happened to be great composers show their mastery of orchestral resources in two symphonic works as different as spring and autumn. The 26-year-old Prokofiev wrote his exuberant “Classical” Symphony as a cheerful exercise in “true Mozartian classicism” with a twist of 20th-century harmony, shortly before leaving revolution-torn Russia for America. Sergei Rachmaninoff, figurehead of the previous generation of Russian masters, composed his last orchestral work, the Symphonic Dances, for American audiences two years before his untimely death in 1943. This is another work that looks back—but mostly to Rachmaninoff’s own earlier music in a spirit of haunted nostalgia. In between, the piano has free rein as first among equals in a rhapsodic series of dialogues with orchestra. This time the composer in question, Robert Schumann, wrote his Piano Concerto with another accomplished pianist in mind—his new bride, Clara.

The music of contemporary Mexico is as vibrant and diverse as the country itself. This Sunday, four days ahead of Cinco de Mayo, Kronos Quartet performs "Nuevo," a multi-textured program embracing Mexico's kaleidoscopic musical soul. We'll hear works by Severiano Briseño, Agustín Lara, Chalino Sánchez, and others, most in arrangements by Osvaldo Golijov . Alberto Domínguez's Perfidia—which first enchanted Kronos violinist David Harrington when he heard it played on an ivy leaf by a Mexico City street performer—and the 1968 piece Mini Skirt by Juan García Esquivel, "king of space-age bachelor pad music," typify the breadth of Kronos' bold explorations. Franck: Sonata With an exclusive EMI recording contract behind him, Emmanuel Pahud's star continues to be in the ascendant. He became the youngest ever section principal at the Berlin Philharmonic, when he was appointed in 1992. His innate musicality and extraordinary technique have put him high on the agenda for solo appearances in Japan, South East Asia, Europe and the United States. In addition to concerto performances, he gives regular chamber concerts, recitals with pianists Stephen Kovacevich and Eric Le Sage, and recently performed with the jazz pianist, Jacky Terrasson. The Guardian “The audience managed to shut up for the Rachmaninov - a performance of furious emotional range and depth. Subordinating any self-conscious virtuosity to expression, she seemed to live out the music rather than simply play it. This was Grimaud at her considerable best”. The Times “Emmanuel Pahud, flautist supreme. He appeared to be playing without breathing: out came long limpid lines, curling effortlessly above and in between the orchestral episodes, neatly tailored in the French and Italian style.”
