Hélène Grimaud
Leader of the Pack
by Heidi Waleson
October 17, 1999 Hélène Grimaud
For the last two years, pianist Hélène Grimaud and her photographer boyfriend have lived in a small house an hour's drive outside New York City. It's convenient to area airports - Grimaud travels often to play with such ensembles as the Los Angeles Philharmonic and the Orchestre de Paris - but the property also affords space for the pianist's other preoccupations: three British Columbian wolves, which she raised from infancy. Apache, Lucas, and Kayla live in a two-acre enclosure surrounded by a high double fence. When Grimaud visits them, she dons padded overalls. Apache, a big white two-year-old male and leader of the pack, jubilantly bounds to Grimaud and leaps all over her, almost doglike in his delight; the other two hang back. "Wolves are like most wild creatures," Grimaud says. "They want to be left alone." Grimaud, 28, is petite and intense, a self-confessed "control freak" who edits her own recordings, makes her own travel arrangements, and limits her concert engagements to those that will not take her away from her animals for more than 10 days a month. That coiled energy explodes in performances of stunning beauty and insight, such as the Beethoven Concerto No. 4, recently performed and recorded with the New York Philharmonic, that left the audience gasping for breath. It also fuels her passion for wolves, creatures that she believes have been unfairly demonized in literature and history.

I am sure that the local presenters of Hélène Grimaud's recital last night, Villa Montalvo and the Steinway Society of the Bay Area, are not too happy with her, for she made them jump through hoops you wouldn't believe. And the product she delivered by no means justified such arrogant behavior.
For the benefit of those of you who have never attended a concert at Villa Montalvo in Saratoga, approximately 50 miles south of San Francisco, the following is a quote from its web page. "Situated in the foothills of California's Santa Cruz Mountains above Silicon Valley, Villa Montalvo is a Mediterranean-style villa built at the turn of the century and left as a legacy for the support and encouragement of music, art, literature and architecture. Several miles of nature trails trace small creeks and hillsides over the 175-acre estate, which also serves as a public park and is open free to visitors year-round." The above does not describe the grandeur of the villa itself with its elegant situation and huge public rooms larger than those found in some European hotels. Concerts, however, are not held in the villa, but in the Carriage House. In case you are thinking that while listening to music our nostrils are assaulted by the aroma of horse droppings and moldy straw, guess again, for the Carriage House, twice as large as most people's homes, has been renovated and turned into a lovely, comfortable recital hall seating 300. Villa Montalvo's offerings this year feature artists of the stature of Alicia De Larrocha, Louis Lortie, Robert Taub, the Eroica Trio, Kiri Te Kanawa, Emmanuel Ax and Yeffim Bronfman.

According to The New York Times, Grimaud "has the power to play with an electrifying aggressiveness, as well as a contrastingly beautiful touch in more lyrical music and the kind of flexibility that allows her to convey the illusion of improvisatory freshness." She will perform Rachmaninoff's Piano Concerto No. 2, included in her first concerto disk, of which The Times wrote, "In the Rachmaninoff, Ms. Grimaud sounds bold, assured and properly rhapsodic, never underplaying the brooding Romanticism but investing it with welcome backbone." According to KBPS morning show host Shaun Yu, "This French-born pianist relishes breaking down stereotypes regarding the kind of music she should play and the way she should play it. Think Rachmaninoff should only be played by the 'boys'? Think again." Minczuk also will conduct Beethoven's passionate "Leonore" Overture No. 3 and Rimsky-Korsakov's most well-known composition, "Scheherazade," based on the famous story of "1001 Arabian Nights." Brazilian conductor Minczuk is currently Co-Artistic Director of the São Paulo State Symphony, an orchestra he joined as Principal Hornist at the age of 16. Critics in New York praised his 1999 conducting appearances with the New York Philharmonic: "What was astonishing was the level of nuance and subtle dynamic shading," and "…there was dynamism to burn." Minczuk is one of six music director candidates to appearing this season. Audience members will have an opportunity to share their opinions of the music director candidates by completing surveys inserted in program books or by visiting the Symphony's Website at www.orsymphony.org.

This Month's Featured Musician:
Hélène Grimaud
Here's a letter from Hélène:
Music changed my life. I was quite an agitated and agitating child before I had music training. As a matter of fact, a psychologist told my parents later on that without music I could have easily become a delinquent of the worst sort! Of all art forms, only music transcends words. It is hard to talk about music when music talks to us better than any other language. But I can tell you that music gave my life a sense of purpose and direction. Music taught me that you should never let anyone convince you that your dreams are outlandish. Few things are more condescending, and what a tragedy it would be if you believed it. Our backgrounds and circumstances may have influenced who we are but, ultimately, we are responsible for who we choose to become, and it takes a long time to become the person you want to be. I have learned that it is not what happens to us that is important-it is what we do about it. Studying music also taught me that you should not compare yourself to others but only to your last best effort, that you cannot get by on charm for very long, that music sharpens your senses, imagination, creativity and intuition, and that you actually have the ability and strength to keep going long after you think you can't. I have learned that difficulties and failures along the way make you stronger and that maturity does not come with how many birthdays you have celebrated but more with the experiences you have had and what you have learned from them.
