After a long day of walking and talking with establishment owners, we treated ourselves to our annual dinner at the Campton Place Bar followed by a night at the symphony. A tradition we've had for the past eight years has been to go Christmas shopping in Union Square and then end up at Campton Place . Unfortunately, that indulgence went by the wayside, this past season. However, we made up for it last night. While I miss the bar's old ambiance, there is a warmth about the recent Campton Place remodel designed by Hong Kong's Sylvia Chang.

BRR director Klaus Nittinger had this to say: "here we have room for our expansion plans and, as Berlin develops in to an airport hub, we have an important market on our doorstep. Berlin and Brandenberg are basically condemned by nature to have synergies". Jurgen Linde, the minister in Potsdam, regrets that the Grand Coalition of CDU and SPD which is governing Berlin is n able to contribute to a responsible policy for the region as a whole e.g. for an integrated public transport system for Berlin and Brandenberg. A survey by the DIW shows clearly that, for example, that there is a high degree of integration between manufacturing companies based around Berlin and nearby suppliers. No matter what the public administrations of Berlin and Brandenberg are doing to harm each other, every second company in the area surrounding Berlin prefers to purchase upstream goods from other firms in the area or directly from Berlin. The unity of the economic area has become a reality and is far ahead of the political situation. So the pressure is growing. For Boulez, Bartok has always been a precursor of the avant-garde style that Boulez himself has pursued. Not surprisingly, Boulez tends to emphasize the spiky, dissonant, modernistic aspects of Bartok's music. But here, much to his credit, he seems content to play the role of accompanist, to provide firm but sympathetic support to his three soloists, each of whom has a very distinct, if not single-minded, approach to his or her chosen concerto. andante that robs it of its otherworldly strangeness and melancholy. At times, Boulez can be too literal-minded, and here Zimmerman (who should have known better) simply follows his lead.

The Overture to Guillaume Tell is the most famous piece Rossini ever wrote, its lively final theme recycled endlessly in popular culture, as a band piece, in parodies, as accompaniment to film and television cartoons, ad infinitum The opening theme of the Guillaume Tell overture is surprisingly lyrical and mellow. A solo cello, supported by the remainder of the cello section playing divisi, by contrabass, and finally by soft timpani, plays an extended, cerebral. This music, darkly beautiful and absolutely singular, aptly conveys the seriousness of the dramatic events soon to unfold in the opera. After this remarkable 47-bar opening, the Overture moves into high gear, with the first of its two Allegro sections. Vedernikov's long experience as an opera conductor clearly pays dividends in his concerto collaborations. (He is Music Director and Chief Conductor of Moscow's Bolshoi Theater and former Music Director of the Stanislavsky Music Theater.) The silken Russian National strings captured the eerie gloom of the 'night music'. (This music has a 1940s film noire Tchaikovsky's Symphony No 5 in E Minor Op 64 is thrice familiar orchestral fare, but there is nothing quite like Tchaikovsky played by a top rank Russian orchestra. Principal French horn Igor Makarov phrased his famous solo in the Andante cantabile con alcuna licenza with alluring romanticism. His wide vibrato had an authentic Russian sound. The wonderfully languid oboe tone of Andrey Rubtsov captured the music's tragic poignancy. In the first movement Andante-Allegro con anima , the violins (led by concertmaster Alexey Bruni) really gave their all to the waltz melody. They played with golden tone and a full, rich vibrato a string section filled with Heifetzs and Milsteins. The often discursive movement had a rhythmic tightness and drive that made the music sound fresh. Vedernikov understood the balletic quality of the Valse: Allegro moderato . One could see the dancers in the mind's eye. (Vedernikov must be a superb ballet conductor.) For once the Finale: Andante maestoso was not an overblown anticlimax but the real apotheosis of Tchaikovsky's musical argument. Vedernikov traced the agony and the ecstasy of this music with an unerring sense of rhythmic energy, dynamic contrast, and lyrical ebb and flow. The musicians responded with colorful, sensitive playing from every orchestral choir. The gorgeous sound of the cello section (under Principal Alexander Gotgelf) was exceptionally beautiful. Tchaikovsky symphonies are rarely performed this idiomatically!
