The new work proved to be far more ingratiating than its aggressive, percussive predecessors and critics promptly accused Bartok of selling out, a judgment that has never entirely died away.

Johnson / Detroit News Music Critic Detroit Symphony Orchestra 8:30 p.m. Tonight, Orchestra Hall Tickets: $15-$56 Call (313) 576-5111 Comment on this story Send this story to a friend Get Home Delivery Nearly six decades after Bela Bartok's death, the Hungarian composer's generally lean, acerbic, not to say downright thorny music still doesn't elicit what you'd call ripping ovations all that often. So it was almost an event in itself Friday afternoon when sustained cheering greeted Helene Grimaud's performance of Bartok's Third Piano Concerto with the Detroit Symphony Orchestra at Orchestra Hall. But it was also easy to understand what all the racket was about. At age 32, the French-born Grimaud, a star since her teens, brings a rare portion of soul and penetrating intelligence to playing that seems to know no technical limits. The Bartok Third requires all of that.

World-Class Pianist Devoted to Her Music and Her Wolves Grimaud, who has also modeled in Vogue for good measure, says she enjoys the Yamaha pianos she often plays in concert for their "warmth of sound, range of color and fine sense of weight." At home, she practices on a Yamaha upright that’s older than she is. Her playing has been called "stormy, passionate and intuitive," and she regularly attracts overflow crowds. She studied animal behavior for two years in order to become certified to welcome two adult wolves Living with wolves is more a question of respect than affection, she explains, and it requires her to observe a complex system of rules. She feels comfortable feeding them with her priceless fingers, for example, but would never turn her back on them. "I’m certain that cohabitation is possible between wolves and man," she told Paris Match in 1998. "In the end, being around my wolves is an extension of my artistic life. It’s an original enrichment that resounds, I’m sure, in the way I interpret the works I choose."

POST RESOURCES Subscribe Contact Us Search Back Issues ... School Links Pianist Helene Grimaud helps make CSO a hit By Mary Ellyn Hutton Post music writer FRANKFURT, Germany It has been eight days since the Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra left Cincinnati to begin their first European tour with music director Paavo Järvi. Eight days, five concerts and one U.S. presidential election, a lively topic for orchestra members waiting to board the bus to Frankfurt Wednesday afternoon in Cologne. Seven days and five concerts remain, including the CSO's debut in Paris Friday night at the Theatre du Chatelet. The concert Wednesday evening at Frankfurt's 2,400-seat Alte Oper was a "return engagement," as it were, Järvi and the CSO having performed there earlier in the tour (Saturday night). Technically, it was a sellout, though a few empty seats could be seen. The concert featured Mahler's Fifth Symphony and the Schumann Piano Concerto in A Minor with French pianist Helene Grimaud, soloist on the CSO tour. A native of Aix-en-Provence who maintains a shelter for wolves and other endangered wildlife at her home in upstate New York, Grimaud captured the heart and drama of the Schumann, occasionally swaying and tilting her head backwards toward the ceiling.

And this is exactly my point: As the days of computer-like playing come to a close, and the audience reaction to automatons like Pollini grows increasingly disappointed, it is time for something new. It is time for pianists such as Ms. Vered, whose technique is musical and whose music-making is technically polished.

Promotional Item Available Only to Radio Partners This program of Live! at the Concertgebouw includes a special recital by a French pianist living in New York, Hélène Grimaud. Born in Aix-en-Provence, southern France, accepted at the age of 12 at the Conservatoire National Supérieur de Musique in Paris, Hélène Grimaud studied under Jacques Rouvier, Gyorgy Sandor and Leon Fleischer. 1987 marked a decisive turning point in her career with performances at the music conference MIDEM in Cannes and La Roque d'Anthéron Piano Festival, as well as her first recital in Tokyo and a concert with the Orchestre de Paris at the invitation of Daniel Barenboim. Since then, Hélène Grimaud performs regularly in most of the leading music centers and with major orchestras worldwide. This recital is part of the Concertgebouw series of Master Pianists. On the program there is Brahms, Bach, Rachmaninov and American composer John Corigliano.
Actually, Beethoven is truly the starting point. John Corigliano was asked to compose a work for the International Van Cliburn Piano Competition in 1985. And he took the allegretto of Beethoven's Seventh Symphony as his point of departure. The ostinato elements in this Beethoven movementt aren't really that far removed from American minimalism. Beethoven's famous theme emerges slowly but surely at the end of this fantasy.
