              Talking Jazz
              By Sholto Byrnes
              Published: 29 April 2005
Forty years ago, a young British pianist called Stan Tracey was lying in bed, thinking of themes for the new album he'd been asked to record with his quartet, when Dylan Thomas's Under Milk Wood came into his mind. Forty years ago, a young British pianist called Stan Tracey was lying in bed, thinking of themes for the new album he'd been asked to record with his quartet, when Dylan Thomas's Under Milk Wood came into his mind. Having recently heard a production of the play in New York, Tracey, then the house pianist at Ronnie Scott's, said he'd been "quite knocked out" by it. Taken by the idea, he got out of bed and settled down to re-reading Thomas's original script, playing the recording he had of the original performance at the same time and noting down ideas. "By the time I'd got to the end of the play," Tracey later wrote, "I'd got all the ideas worked out, and just went on from there - writing for the title and for the characters." Tracey's "Jazz Suite: Under Milk Wood" has since become one of the most celebrated compositions by a British jazz artist, its name rarely appearing unaccompanied by the adjective "legendary". Last Friday, its 40th anniversary was marked by a performance at the Mermaid Theatre in London, in an evening hosted by Clare Teal and featuring the original saxophonist from the 1965 recording, Bobby Wellins, alongside Stan's son Clark on drums, Andy Cleyndert on bass, and the actors Ruth and Philip Madoc and Victor Spinetti. (The readings were added after the original recording; performances can be of either version.)

The classic Blogurt lineup revisits a glorious past the band itself describes as "an unlikely convergence of satirical, politically bent lyrics, stick in yer head melodies, funkified bass, grouchily lilting garage bassoon and corn-fed drums.". As Dave Macarchick explains the road to their reunion, "We did break up, but then we got together about nine years ago and started practicing again for this show, so we're just about right there." And the timing, as he notes, is right. (Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, PA)

Tony Award nominee Sherie Rene Scott in Dirty Rotten Scoundrels
photo by Carol Rosegg News, views and reviews about the multi-talented women of the musical theatre and the concert/cabaret stage. SHERIE RENE SCOTT Her talented co-star won the Tony, but for me, the most exciting discovery in Disney's Aida was Sherie Rene Scott, who managed to shine in the difficult role of Amneris, the Egyptian princess caught in an ill-fated love triangle. Not only did Scott raise the rafters with her powerful, rangy belt, but she also offered the most nuanced, best-acted performance, a difficult feat considering she had to lead the campy fashion show in "My Strongest Suit." Scott also shone in two vastly different Off-Broadway productions: the two-person musical The Last Five Years , which was penned by Parade 's Jason Robert Brown, and the comedic romp that was Debbie Does Dallas , based on the classic porn film. In between her theatre adventures, Scott also found time to form — with husband Kurt Deutsch — Sh-K-Boom Records (Scott's debut solo disc, "Men I've Had," was the label's premiere offering), the Grammy-nominated independent record label that recently spawned Ghostlight Records, dedicated to preserving more traditional theatrical fare.

LITTLE RICHARD ROCKS MY SOCKS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
bob beanery 2005-09-12
I saw Little Richard last night. He was fantastic! Unfortunately, his voice was horse. He was going to sell posters for $25 to autograph, but it started raining. So he gave away 10 non-autographed ones. I had brought my own poster, and he signed it on stage!!!! He was very courteous. He even threw gold watches to the audience! This was such a cool show! And best of all, it was on my birthday!
Micah Weber 2005-09-11
dear Richard, I saw your bio on tv and was impressed with your spiritual journey. thanks for sharing it. I was moved and inspired to continue on mine. jennifer speich 2005-09-08 JUNE MARIE KRESGE 2005-09-01 I just watched "Little Richard" the movie for the first time last night. I thought it was a study in self-esteem and the fact the "God doens't make junk." I thought it was all about being true to God's creation and never being filled with self-loathing. Great story. He is just so much fun and never takes himself too seriously. I loved the last scene and the London performance. Such fun. Elaine
