Mezzo-soprano Sophie Taillefer performs French cabaret, opera and music hall numbers on January 8 at AVA, 7:30p.m
One of our city's favorite actors is back on stage for one week only when Anthony Lawton stars as Clive in an adaptation of C.S. Lewis' classic, "The Great Divorce". The story of a confused professor joined by a crew of malcontents on a very unusual bus ride, this production opens on January 5 and runs through January 9 as a Lantern Theater presentation at St. Stephen's Theater, 10th and Ludlow. 215-829-9002. Another outstanding modern dance group heads to the Zellerbach Theatre in the continuing and admirable series presented by Dance Affiliates and Penn Presents. Momix, created by artistic director Moses Pendleton, is known for its humorous shenanigans as well as "ingenuity, theatricality and imagination" and for its sterling and athletic team of ten remarkable dancers. "Lunar Sea" highlights the program in two acts: "Sea of Tranquility" and "Bay of Seethings". January 6 at 7:30 p.m., 7th at 8 p.m., and 8th at both 2 and 8 p.m. 3680 Walnut. 215-898-3900. Maestro Christoph Eschenbach again demonstrates his love for the music of Gustav Mahler with his performances of January 6, 7 and 8 with the Philadelphia Orchestra in the great Symphony #9. Free pre-performance conversations are set for all three events 75 minutes before each concert and on opening night, a post-performance event will feature the conductor and his reflections on this symphony. On January 10, for the annual Tribute Concert honoring Martin Luther King, Jr., Raymond Harvey takes the baton in works by Beethoven, Arensky and Tippett, with Charlotte Blake Alston as host and speaker, mezzo-soprano Lucia Bradford, and Maestro Eschenbach at the piano along with the Community Concert Choir under Jonathan Coopersmith. Verizon Hall at the Kimmel Center, Broad and Spruce. 215-8931999.

has brought such musical luminaries as Allen Toussaint, Olu Dara, Irma Thomas and Galactic to Tipitina's (501 Napoleon Ave., 895-TIPS; www.tipitinas.com ) to share their knowledge with local high school music students and interested music fans. As remarkable as those opportunities were, bringing together Joseph "Zigaboo" Modeliste, Smokey Johnson and the legendary Earl Palmer to talk about drums Saturday is a coup. The Masters Seminars feature the artists performing, talking about their craft, answering questions and jamming with some of the music students in Tipitina's Intern Program. That format is not strictly adhered to James "Blood" Ulmer jammed with students for almost the entire time but it's the format that Modeliste followed when he conducted a seminar last year, opening with a remarkable drum solo that stretched to more than 20 minutes.
