Columbia University) Remembering Carolyn Heilbrun Many readers of The Women's Review of Books were saddened to learn of the death of pioneering feminist scholar Carolyn Heilbrun. For us on the staff, losing her means losing a part of our history: She was instrumental in founding the Women's Review and served as one of our editorial advisers from the very beginning, putting us in touch with potential writers and subscribers, and writing often herself. We will miss her intelligence, her creativity, and her insight. In July, Heilbrun contributed an article to our special issue about Women Aging. At 77, she was the oldest contributor to the issue, which she emphasized in our editorial discussions with her. In the article, she talked (not for the first time, as readers of her book The Last Gift of Time knew) about making the choice to continue living beyond age 70. She wrote of her constant awareness that she might at any moment fall victim to "a devastating, unanticipated assault from some bodily failure," saying, "If each day is a loan from eternity, one spends it with the joy known to gamblers betting everything on a last roll of the dice. The payoff is intensity." At some point, though, the intensity must have failed her. "I have always believed that, over 70, one should be as free to choose one's death as one must, earlier, be free to choose whether or not to give birth," she stated. In October, she committed suicide.

    Irena Portenko
Pianist Home New York About the Teacher IRENA PORTENKO began her newsworthy performance career at the age of eight, having performed Haydn’s Concerto in D Major with the Ukrainian National Orchestra. Her startling array of appearances has since been described as possessing “passion, diligence, tenderness and . . . robust virtuosity” [Ukrainian Weekly, MI, 2000]. Her distinctly perceptive and courageous musicality has been shared with orchestras and audiences throughout Europe and America, including multiple concerto recitals, international competitions, and festivals.
As soloist and chamber collaborator, Ms. Portenko has appeared in recitals from Ukraine and Russia to Germany, France, Italy, United States, and elsewhere. She has given interpretations of most important works of piano repertoire, has enjoyed collaborations with exciting composers and performers such as violinists Andrew Jennings, Walter Verdehr and Jeremy Kittel; flutist Amy Porter; cellists Anthony Elliot and Natalia Khoma: tenor George Shirley and bass Stephan Szkafarovsky. Additionally, she has been pleased to premiere Myroslav Skoryk’s sonata for Violin and Piano in collaboration with Solomia Soroka and triptych “Venetian blinds” for solo piano by Michael Daugherty.
Culminating an extensive body of work, her talents carried her into the semifinals in the 2002 Gina Bachauer International Artists Piano Competition (Salt Lake City, UT). She was also a 1999 and 2002 winner of University of Michigan’s Concerto Competition, 1994 Pierre Lantier International Competition (Paris, France), and 1993 Prokofiev National Competition (Donetsk, Ukraine), among others. Currently, Ms. Portenko is working on the recording of Twenty Four Etudes by F. Chopin and lecture-presentation of Liszt’s Grandes Études après Paganini.
