MY FAVORITE PIANIST
As weird as Glenn Gould was, this article makes clear that he was astonishingly gifted as well: In fact, it was clear early on that there was something in Glenn Gould that inspired others to think otherworldly and transcendent thoughts in his presence. Bert Gould wrote to a friend when his son was just 15, "My wife and I have always prayed that Glenn's music might be able to touch men's hearts in such a way that it would be a turning point in their lives. In some ways, our prayers have been answered. One mother telephoned us after her son had heard Glenn play. She said that her son came home after the concert and said 'Mom, you've been telling me that there was such a thing as a hereafter and a life eternal. I never really believed it until I heard Glenn Gould play tonight. Now I know.'." So do Ieach time I hear Gould's rendition of the Goldberg Variations TrackBack

years Glenn Gould (1932-1982) has sometimes been thought to belong in all three categories. His father, a prosperous Canadian furrier, changed the family name from Gold to Gould; many admirers have assumed that the reclusive musician hypersensitive, fussy, and in his youth almost effeminately pretty must have been a closeted gay; and at one time or another nearly all his recordings have been derided as perverse in tempo

Thirty-Two Short Films About Glenn Gould
Medium Film Keywords Children Disability Family Relationships Humor and Illness/Disability ... Stroke Summary A tiny figure slowly emerges from a vast expanse of snow, and a succession of short essays recreate moments in the life of the brilliant Canadian pianist, Glenn Gould (Colm Feore). From his unusual Ontario childhood to his musical debuts on the international stage, to his eccentric living, performing, dressing, driving, waking, and sleeping habits, this film offers insights into his loneliness, hypochondria, polypharmacy, and tragic death from a stroke at age 50 in 1982. The artistic vignettes are enriched by a tender humour, the intimate recollections of real-life friends, the abstract beauty of piano keys in motion, and above all, Gould's immortal playing. Commentary Gould's musical genius was well tempered by his foibles. Did he cease performing in public from his professed conviction that recordings were better? Or, was he afraid? If he preferred his unending solitude, why did he find it necessary to phone friends at 3 a.m. and talk at them until they fell asleep? Was hypochondria the disease for which he took hundreds of different types of prescription medications? Or, was it somehow a futile, preventive response to an uncanny premonition of his sudden end?

    Pros
Excellent selection of Glenn Gould recordings providing superb overview; budget price. Cons The sampler/selection format has drawbacks, particularly with classical music. The Bottom Line All of the material on this soundtrack is excellent (5 star material), but fragments of compositions are not ideal for extensive listening. Still, Glenn Gould shines in nearly any format. Full Review With precisely these boons and caveats in mind, I recommend the soundtrack album to Thirty-Two Short Films About Glenn Gould Just over half of the 23 selections on this CD are of works by J.S. Bach, the composer most associated with Glenn Gould, and whom Gould championed on the piano at a time when Bach was still the main provenance of period instrumentalists. Gould possessed a ferocious intellect and technique combined with the uncanny ability to render complex contrapuntal music crystal clear. Certain idiosyncrasies notwithstanding, he remains one of the most outstanding interpreters of the Bach keyboard oeuvre. This CD includes the Aria Goldberg Variations , as well as movements from the English and French Suites

    NO GLENN GOULD HE:
NOW THAT'S A PIANO LESSON: In town for a DSO gig, superstar Lang Lang plays for the neighborhood kids (MARK STRYKER, January 14, 2005, Detroit FREE PRESS)
It wasn't as prestigious or lucrative as playing a solo recital at Carnegie Hall. But for the 22-year-old Chinese pianist Lang Lang, the hottest new star in classical music, his unusual Wednesday night appearance in a Bloomfield Township living room was just as much fun (maybe more) and every bit as challenging. You try playing finger-busting Liszt and Chopin with dozens of elementary school kids swarming about the piano like bees at a hive, some even squished tightly underneath the instrument and others standing so close that their breath tickles the back of your neck. Lang whose full name is pronounced Long Long performs this weekend with the Detroit Symphony Orchestra, but he took a night out to play a rare mini-recital for about 80 kids and perhaps 35 adults at the sprawling contemporary home of Wei Shen, a mother of a 7- and 9-year-old, both of whom study piano. Lang, wearing natty pinstripes and longer jet-black hair than in many of his publicity shots, stayed for hours, playing several pieces, answering questions, posing for countless pictures, autographing CDs, horsing around with the children, partaking in the potluck Chinese feast and offering some impromptu coaching. When a 9-year-old in pigtails hopped up on the piano bench and started playing a charming Mozart piece from memory, Lang plopped down beside her and played along with his right hand. The duet ended in giggles as the pianists' hands tied themselves into a knot at the center of the keyboard.

zeitgeist Any human being is like the score to a symphony: a composition of fragmented parts, independent melodies, themes and variations, individual tiny dots and lines that somehow manage to form a complete, harmonious unit. At the cineplexes, most biopics treat their subjects the way an audience hears recorded music, with less attention to the parts than to the harmonious (or not) whole. What places the 1994 Canadian Thirty-Two Short Films About Glenn Gould A child prodigy who remembered being able to read music before he could read words, Glenn Gould grew to become the world's foremost Bach interpreter, Canada's most celebrated classical pianist, and a national hero. In 1964, at the height of his international performance career, he abruptly retired from the concert stage. Gould spent his remaining years in the controlled environment of studio recording, playing the stock market like a Wall Street insider, and composing philosophical musings for radio and television. In 1982 he died of a stroke at age 50. The winner of four 1994 Genie Awards (the Canadian "Oscar"), including Best Picture and Best Director

    Esthetics and influence
His influence on the young pianists of that period was more important than one might have realized. At the Conservatory, instead of listening to our teachers, we all wanted to play Chopin like Pollini, Rachmaninov like Horowitz and, of course, Bach like Gould. What a mistake that was! His tempos, either very fast or extremely slow, were just impossible to follow. His feeling for the non legato phrase was so precise that only he could master all its different aspects, from portato to staccato quasi pizzicato Clearly, Gould was a man of counterpoint rather than harmony. His love for horizontality came from his playing the organ as a child. He was never attracted to verticality. His landmarks were the flatness of Lake Simcoe covered with ice and Hiroshi Teshigano’s movie "The Sand Woman." In music, it was Gibbons, Bach, Handel, Haydn, the modern Vienna school and Hindemith. He did, however, sometimes make an exception for Chopin, Liszt and Rachmaninov. And when he approached a classical composer, it was mainly through a baroque prism. Only a few of the Romantics held his attention, and those were mostly from the end of the century. Wagner, Richard Strauss and Mahler attracted him as the precursors of the Vienna school, because of their decadent streak. Yet he studied pieces by Mendelssohn and Brahms, and his recordings of the latter’s
