Glenn Gould: A Perspective
Welcome to the Glenn Gould: A Perspective web page which I hope will be of interest to admirers of Glenn Gould's work. I suppose I am more or less an ordinary GG fan. Back around 1990 I borrowed a copy of the 1982 Goldberg Variations and since that time have listened to and enjoyed many of his recordings. I have also accumulated a nice collection of old Gould phonograph albums, one CD, Geoffrey Payzant's and Friedrich's book, a guide to the 1988 National Library GG exhibition, and a 1954 newspaper review. Another little treasure of mine are two musical scores, unmarked with no marginalia unfortunately, which are stamped "From the collection of Glenn Gould " that I purchased at a Friends of the National Library booksale. Less tangible but a gift of greater value was my renewed interest in classial music that Gould's albums inspired in me. Learning about Gould's life has also provided me with a fun diversion from raising my three children. Readers of this page are invited to send additional information and Glenn Gould anecdotes with which I might improve some of these articles. Send suggestions to mdavidson@pipsc.ca.

Canadian pianist noted for his performances and recordings of the works of Bach, Beethoven, and Brahms. Encyclopedia Gould, Glenn, 1932–82, Canadian pianist and composer. A prodigy, he began study at the Royal Conservatory of Music in Toronto at 12. He was piano soloist with the Toronto Symphony at 14, and by the time he was 19 he was making concert tours in Canada, soon becoming known for idiosyncratic performance behavior. A great pianist, Gould was particularly noted for his interpretations of Bach and the romantics. As a composer, Gould was influenced by the postromantic music of the late 19th cent. His first published composition, a string quartet, had its premiere on television in 1956. During the 1960s Gould reduced his concert appearances to a minimum, preferring thereafter to concentrate on recording. Bibliography See biographies by O. Friedrich (1989) and P. F. Ostwald (1997).

The pianist Glenn Gould (1932-1982) profoundly affected the way people hear, perceive and appreciate music in one of the most unique and fascinating careers in the modern history of classical music. For most of his mature career, Gould did not perform live, reaching his audience instead through a remarkable legacy of recordings and broadcasts now heard exclusively on Sony Classical. On the evening of January 11, 1955, Gould made his debut in New York "Debutown," as he called it and the next day signed a recording contract with Columbia Masterworks (CBS), which would become Sony Classical in 1986. Gould's first recording of Bach's Goldberg Variations took place at the CBS studios in June of 1955. The record won instant acclaim, became a bestseller, and launched the pianist's career as a fully mature international artist. Gould went on to make over sixty recordings for the label. Glenn Gould was born in Toronto on September 25, 1932, into a musical family: Edvard Grieg was a first cousin of his mother's grandfather, his father was an amateur violinist, and his mother played piano and organ. Gould's mother was his only teacher until he was ten. When he was three years old, it became evident that he possessed exceptional musical aptitude, including absolute pitch and even the ability to read staff notation. At five he began to compose, and he played his own little compositions for family and friends. At the age of six, Gould was taken to his first live musical performance, which was Josef Hofmann's last appearance in Toronto. It created a lasting and important impression upon the boy.

Home Sokolov Prokofiev Gould ... Scotland Gould made his first commercial recording for Columbia in June 1955, the Goldberg Variations. It's perhaps no accident of history that a recording of an unfamiliar masterwork of Bach's by a relatively unknown, young Canadian pianist should have become the best selling classical LP of 1956. Gould by his very nature was never content with the orthodox; at his own insistence it had to be the Goldberg variations he recorded, not the more familiar French suites or Partitas. The legend began in a small church in New York where this recording was made; and the result was history in the making: the beginning of a series of records, without parallel in the classical world. Technology, Gould argued would overtake the traditional function of the concert hall: "In an unguarded moment some months ago I predicted that public concerts as we know it today would no longer exist a century hence, that its function would have been entirely taken over by an electronic media". From an early age Gould had experimented with recording by strapping microphones to the soundboard of his beloved Chickering piano. By his mid teens he was in the studios of CBC, the national radio station. He felt secure in the "womb-like" comfort of the studio: he was in control. The process of making a record was mastered by Gould early on. Towards the end of his life he would end up as a co-producer of his LP's besides making TV programmes and producing revolutionary radio programmes.

Glenn Gould (Conductor, Piano, Organ) Born: Spetember 25, 1932 - Toronto, Canada
    Died: October 4, 1982 - Toronto, Canada
The remarkable Canadian pianist (also organist, conductor, and composer), Glenn (Herbert) Gould, was born into a musical family: Edvard Grieg was a first cousin of his mother's grandfather, his father was an amateur violinist, and his mother played piano and organ. Gould's mother was his only teacher until he was ten. When he was three years old, it became evident that he possessed exceptional musical aptitude, including absolute pitch and even the ability to read staff notation. At five, he began to compose, and played his own little compositions for family and friends. At the age of six Gould was taken to his first live musical performance which was Josef Hofmann's last appearance in Toronto. It created a lasting and important impression upon the boy.
Robert Fulford, a distinguished Canadian author, met Gould when they were both nine and the two families were next-door neighbours. He wrote: "Even as a child Glenn was isolated because he was working like hell to be a great man. He had a tremendous feeling and loving affection for music. . . It was an utter, complete feeling. He knew who he was and where he was going."
At the age of ten, Gould began lessons at the Royal Conservatory of Music in Toronto. Alberto Guerrero was his piano teacher; he studied organ with Frederick C. Silvester and theory with Leo Smith. Gould competed in 1944, at the age of 12, in the annual Kiwanis Music Festival and won the piano trophy. It was to be the only competition Gould would enter, for he later came to be strongly opposed to the idea of young musicians competing with each other and indeed to competition of any sort. In 1945 he passed the associateship examination as a solo performer at the Royal Conservatory, signifying a professional level of attainment. In 1946, at the age of 14, he passed the music theory examinations and was awarded a diploma with highest honors. Gould continued piano lessons with Alberto Guerrero until 1952.
