Polish Pianists in the U.S. (Part 1) by Barbara Zakrzewska
In 1898 several famous Polish musicians performed in many American cities. In this two reports from 100 years ago, we will present musical activities of these musicians, beginning from selected events in the career of Leopold Godowsky (b. in Soshly near Vilnius, 1870, d. in New York, 21 Nov. 1938). Leopold GODOWSKY gave his first concert in the U.S. in 1884. He was only 14 years old at that time, but he was already a concert-stage veteran: he began concertizing at the age of nine with a tour through Germany and Poland. In 1890 he took the position of a lecturer at the New York College of Music. In 1891 Godowsky married a singer, Frieda Saxe, and received American citizenship. In the following decade he focused on teaching and concertizing. In 1894-95 Godowsky taught at the Broad Street Conservatory, Philadelphia. For five years, 1895-1900, he served as chairman of the piano department at the Chicago Conservatory of Music. During that time he gave many piano recitals at the Conservatory, which brought him great fame. His third recital on January 6, 1898 had the following program:
Beethoven: 32 Variations in C minor
Schumann: Fantasia C major op.17

These figures aim to characterize or establish moods and subjects. Schubert, in particular, has bequeathed an enormous vocabulary of rhetorical figures. For example, the spinning motive, used to superb effect in "Gretchen am Spinnrade", quickly became a much-used gesture in the piano literature of the period. Godowsky's response to Schubert's vocabulary is typical. He never allows rhetorical figures to remain intact, in his transcriptions of twelve of Schubert's Songs. As an example, the water motive in Die Forelle is dissected and manipulated to the point where it loses much of its original character. But Godowsky's methods vary considerably from song to song. His variations on

A Discussion of Left-Handed Literature for the Piano
by Annemarie Schuessler Left-Handed Literature in the Romantic Period During the Romantic period, the piano was the "king of all instruments," and this was perhaps the most prolific period for left-handed literature. By the time he had composed his Studies, Op. 13 Ludwig Berger (1777-1839) had suffered a nervous disorder. He was on the faculty at both the St. Petersburg (Russia) and the Berlin, (Germany) Conservatories. Mendelssohn was his pupil, and he is said to be the influence behind Mendelssohn's Songs Without Words . Berger's, Etude for the Left Hand is primarily a cantabile, or singing piece. The piece is challenging in its use of major and minor modes. Louis Kohler's (1820-1886) Melody from Weber's Freischutz is a transcription piece. While a familiar air, its prominent arpeggios challenge the artist to make the piece sound free-flowing and effortless. Initially, there are no fingering indications, however, as the piece becomes more difficult the fingering and the pedaling are included. Originally

Famous Piano Teachers: Part One
There is a large amount of information on the web about the great piano teachers of the past . This article is an attempt to organize some of that information. It is nowhere near being complete, but by browsing through this information you should be able to get a good idea of who some of the teachers were, and who some of their students were. I have not tried to go into any detail about methodology or technical approaches except in the broadest sense where appropriate.

The fifth and last movement is the second longest with its in excess of seven-teen minutes. The movement has a Dies irae in the tempo indication, and consequently it is a serious event, almost like a Marcia funebre. The long list of indications for this concluding music of the sonata also harbors a Lento mesto and a Larghetto lamentoso, so the serenity of emotion is in place throughout, concluding the great sonata in thoughtfulness and reflection. This is masterly composed music, in the last movement reaching out to modern times in a sort of timeless statement, touching us today equally as naked and direct as it must have done at the time of composition.

The Grand Piano Series
An Introduction
"The great virtue of this wonderful instrument is ... its quality of revealing the personality of the pianist. It will preserve for later generations the art of the great pianists ..."
So wrote Sydney Grew in 'Musical Opinion', February 1924, a time which has been described as the heyday of the Reproducing Piano. He closed his article with the following words;
"I consider the Duo-Art one of the most wonderful inventions of modern times. By mechanical means it reproduces with a full measure of character and individuality the personal art of great pianists. The reproduction seems to be not a copy but the original"
High praise indeed for an invention less than 12 years old which was to disappear almost completely in less than ten. Where had it come from and where did it go?
However during their heyday no lesser critic than Ernest Newman writing in 1927 sang the praises of the Duo-Art system following a concert given in London during which the great pianist Cortot played "live" alongside a Duo-Art recording he had made. Newman was unable to distinguish between the piano roll and the real thing. "Now and again I would say to myself: 'This is Cortot' or 'This is Duo-Art,' but on opening my eyes I found myself as often wrong as right"
Interviewed about his Duo-Art recordings the great Leopold Godowsky enthused thus; "It is a truly remarkable experience to hear the Duo-Art mirror in every essential quality of tone and expression the Fantaisie (Chopin Fantaisie in F minor) as I played it a week ago! To think this same performance will be heard in thousands of homes, years hence - just as I played it at Aeolian Hall!"

Leopold Godowsky, Jr. and Leopold Mannes, affectionately known by colleagues and friends as "God and Man" were professional musicians who performed together as violinist and pianist and who enjoyed photography as a hobby. Leopold, Jr. also performed as soloist with others and as first violinist of the San Francisco and the Los Angeles Symphonies. He also enrolled at the UCLA to study physics and chemistry. Godowsky continued research work into the 1950s improving the color process for Kodak in his own laboratory in Westport, Connecticut. However, he considered music, especially playing chamber music - often with the most illustrious musicians of his time (like Heifetz, Primrose, Feuermann, and Piatigorsky) - his greatest passion in life.

Leopold Mannes' passion for photography led to his work creating Kodachrome, the first practical color film.
Mannes and Leopold Godowsky, Jr. met as teenagers. Both were fascinated by the popular Brownie cameras, and both longed for a way to take color photographs, experimenting with the process. Mannes went on to study music at Harvard and earned a Pulitzer and a Guggenheim fellowship for composition. But even after he and Godowsky became musicians, they continued their photographic collaboration. Their search for financial support led them to Eastman Kodak, where they were hired and assigned a team of researchers. While working in darkness, Godowsky and Mannes measured film developing times by whistling the last movement of Brahms' C-minor Symphony. In 1936, Kodachrome film was introduced. The availability of a robust, practical color film triggered a cultural, artistic and commercial revolution as amateur and professional photographers embraced the new technology which was used for both still and motion picture photography. Mannes remained in music after inventing Kodachrome, performing as a pianist and composing several musical scores. He served as president of the Mannes College of Music founded by his parents, and he served as a judge in music competitions, including the first Van Cliburn International Piano Competition. Born in New York City, he studied music at Juilliard and Harvard.

Harold Schonberg of the New York Times described this music as "probably the most impossibly difficult things ever written for the piano. These are fantastic exercises that push piano technique to heights undreamed of even by Liszt." No question about it; the G# minor Etude of Op. 25 is hard enough to play as originally written, but to play all those double thirds with the left hand! Very difficult, indeed! Leopold Godowsky (1870 - 1938) was born in Sozly near Vilnius (Wilno, now in Lithuania). Considering his achievements both on the concert stage and in writing for the piano, it is remarkable that he achieved all this with minimal formal training. After rudimentary instruction as a child, when 13 he studied for three months in Berlin and that was it; the rest was self-taught. He always was experimenting with new techniques. Godowsky had enormous interest in the technical side of playing the piano, focusing on different fingering and development of left hand performance. Little music had been written that was a true challenge for the left hand. Some composers wrote left-hand concertos for Paul Wittgenstein, including Prokofiev, Britten, Korngold and Ravel (Wittgenstein didn't play most of them and struggled with those he did). Blumenfeld's Etude for the Left Hand (spectacularly recorded by Simon Barere) and Georges Cziffra's transcription of Flight of the Bumble Bee
