George Gershwin True music must repeat the thought and inspirations of the people and the time. My people are Americans and my time is today . - George Gershwin Life is one long jubilee.
You should care for me!
George Gershwin was born Jacob Gershowitz on September 26, 1898 in Brooklyn, New York. The son of immigrant parents, George became one of America's first premier composers and his compositions are still used today as tool of teachers everywhere as examples of the American entrance to the musical world of Stravinsky, Chopin, Beethoven and Mozart. George had two brothers, Arthur and Ira, and one sister, Francis (Frankie). Although George is the most well known of the family, his brother Ira was also a succesful lyricist. In fact, if it weren't for Ira's interest in music, George's parents would not have purchased the family's first piano. Ira was going to study the piano when the instrument was brought into the family home, but it was George who took the immediate interest in it and immediately began to successfully play by ear. His parents invested some piano lessons in him and George began to study seriously at the young age of 12 years. Early Professional Career (1916-1924)
George began his professional career in "Tin Pan Alley," a location in New York City where aspiring composers and song writers would bring their scores to a publisher in hopes of selling the tunes for a modest amount of cash. As a "song plugger" for the Jerome Remick Company, George was exposed to thousands of songs, which gave him a better idea for what songs had a successful quality.

George Gershwin in Madison by Michael Allsen It was January 1934. The top news stories of the day were the recent repeal of Prohibition, the still-unsolved Lindbergh kidnapping, andhitting closest to homea violent strike by dairy farmers. On January 7, The Capital Times broke the story that George Gershwin would perform at West High School on January 24. This was sensational newsGershwin was probably the most famous musical performer to appear in Madison in the 1930s. He was already a familiar name by the early 1920s, with a string of successful Broadway shows, and hit songs like Swanee. But it was a collaboration with the Paul Whiteman Orchestra in early 1924 that made him a national star. His "Jazz Concerto" Rhapsody in Blue was an unprecedented success, and one of the first truly successful fusions of Jazz style and Classical orchestration. Gershwin became increasingly confident writing for orchestra, and in succeeding years followed up the Rhapsody with orchestral works like An American in Paris and the Concerto in F.

George Gershwin
Most Americans are familiar with George Gershwin's music whether they know it or not. More than 60 years after his death, the composer's songs still turn up in ads and on the albums of contemporary artists such as Harry Connick Jr. Even listeners who can't recall their names would likely recognize "Rhapsody in Blue," "An American in Paris" and portions of "Porgy and Bess." Gershwin first displayed his talent at the age of 12, when he sat down at his family's new piano and played songs by ear. He later took lessons, then quit school at 15 to work as a pianist for a music publisher on New York's "Tin Pan Alley." He sold his first song in 1916, when the Harry Von Tilzer Music Co. bought "When You Want 'Em, You Can't Get'Em, When You've Got 'Em, You Don't Want 'Em," written with Murray Roth. The Brooklyn native was among the first to introduce jazz rhythms into popular songs. He often teamed up with his older brother, Ira, who wrote most of the lyrics. Their collaborations resulted in several revues and Broadway musicals, including "Oh, Kay!" "Strike Up the Band" and the satirical "Of Thee I Sing," which won a Pulitzer Prize. Gershwin also produced sophisticated concert pieces. His "Rhapsody in Blue" wowed the audience at its 1924 debut with Paul Whiteman's orchestra and Gershwin on piano. In addition, he composed the tone poem "An American in Paris" as well as "Concerto in F," "Preludes For Piano" and "Second Rhapsody."

Gershwin's 'Blue' Rhapsody by Len Bourret
From the dark, dusty corner of Aeolian Hall, I was transported back to February 12, 1924. Light falling on the classic, Baldwin piano formed a pale line, which filled the space between each piano key. Shadows embossed, and hovered, against the red tapestry, ghostly apparitions masking the life's blood of previous years. Marking time in simple-song form, 32 bars, and 2 musical phrases, from which I could hear music in the rhapsodic color of blue. A type of folk song, originating from African-American culture and ethnicity, with a 20th-century melancholy of repeated notes. But one without a closing section. A song in a seemingly endless, unfinished symphony. A concerto with 3 movements, in which the piano stands out in bold relief, against a muted orchestral backdrop. The end result being that I can only hear the piano, but no other instruments are significant. The piano becomes a harmonica, resounding in two or more independent, but related melodic parts.
The sound which eminates is sometimes dissonant, not pleasing to the ear. At other times, its melody produces a glissando of continuous or sliding movements on a too-rapid scale. A barbershop quartet, which sings off key, and is not in harmony. An unwritten improv, which gradually gets worse, as its tone-deafness increases.

Jane Erb A poor scholar uninterested in intellectual pursuits, George left school at fifteen to join music publisher Jerome K. Remick as Tin Pan Alley's youngest-ever song-plugger for $15.00 a week, all the while trying his hand at composition. His first published song (in 1916) was When You Want 'Em You Can't Get 'Em, which did not catch on, but that same year Sigmund Romberg used another Gershwin song in a show. This was also the year in which Gershwin began making piano rolls (many under a pseudonym). George left Remick in 1917 to travel the vaudeville circuit as a pianist. Next he was hired to write songs for Max Dreyfus, head of the publishing house T.B. Harms, and he toured as accompanist for Nora Bayes. Gershwin's first Broadway show, La, La, Lucille, ran for one hundred performances in 1919, the same year that Al Jolson heard Swanee (written in 1917) and added it to his touring show. Swanee was a tremendous hit which sold over two million records its first year, and George was well on his way to fame and fortune. For the next five years he wrote the music for George White's Scandals, and in the 1922 Scandals he included a one-act opera called Blue Monday. This opera lasted only a single performance, but it was the first serious music by the successful young composer (who by now had entered New York society and become an equally successful man about town).

GEORGE GERSHWIN (1898-1937), composer/pianist George Gershwin's virtuosic piano technique and ebullient style bring the Jazz Age to life in this digital recording of 12 of the composer's piano rolls. Rare tunes never before recorded in any form are joined with Gershwin's singular performance of "Rhapsody in Blue," all transferred from the original 1920s rolls to a contemporary concert grand piano. Using the Yamaha Disklavier , a computer-driven descendant of the player piano, Artis Wodehouse has captured note-for-note Gershwin's own arrangements of his music, in a landmark recording as entertaining as it is historic. Also featuring the two-roll arrangement of "An American in Paris," prepared by George Gershwin's editor, Frank Milne. Tracks

"A Gershwin Tribute" MUSIC: Gershwin's Rhapsody in Blue (excerpt), Paul Whiteman Orchestra, Gershwin, piano [RCA Victor 09026 63276-2, track 1] down and under: FLAXMAN:
Hello and welcome to Compact Discoveries . I'm your guide, Fred Flaxman, and I have a very special treat for you this hour. We are going to go back in time to July 10th, 1938, and listen to a memorial broadcast honoring George Gershwin on the eve of the first anniversary of the composer's premature death on July 11, 1937. The broadcast starred Jane Froman, Felix Knight, Sonny Schuyler and the Victor Salon Group, conducted by Nathaniel Shilkret. The concert was later released on 78 rpm records, and now it is available on an RCA Victor, BMG Classics compact disc. We'll hear the entire CD in a moment, but first a few words about George Gershwin. MUSIC: out FLAXMAN : Gershwin succeeded in everything he attempted, from piano playing to composing music for Broadway musicals, Hollywood films, and the world's concert halls and opera houses. I think it's safe to say that his music appeals to more people than any other American composer, before or since. The popular music he wrote in the 1920s and 30s is still popular today. The concert music he wrote during his all-too-brief lifetime still attracts large concert audiences.

George Gershwin Alone
How the heck does he do that?
Ned Stevens
January 30, 2005
It takes a considerable amount of strength to do a one-man (or woman) show. It's just the performer and the audience out there, and that ideally means that the performer is vastly outnumbered. This has been the case for most performances of "George Gershwin Alone," the one-man show starring Hershey Felder at the Royal George Theatre Center , in which Felder portrays the title character for more than an hour and a half. The show opened at the Royal George in the fall of 2004 and (while taking a brief hiatus in early 2005) shows signs of enjoying a lengthy run throughout the remainder of the year.
