Rachmaninoff
Challenge Classics CC72057 (63 minutes: DDD)
The Etudes-tableaux, representing the continuation of the transcendental concept of the etude in the works of Liszt and Lyapunov, are among Rachmaninoff's finest piano works, and yet they remain relatively overlooked on record. Perhaps the answer lies in their extreme difficulty - both technically and interpretatively they demand a pianist of the highest calibre to do them justice. Nikolai Lugansky, who made these recordings in 1992, is certainly such an artist. He is highly attuned to the complexities of Rachmaninoff's style and has a spectacular technique that is more than equal to the cruel snowstorm of the E flat minor, Op.33 No.6, and the fleet repetitions of the A minor, Op.39 No.6. Everything is accomplished with unquestionable mastery and a minimum of fuss, recalling the distinguished style of such interpreters as Andrei Gavrilov, and even the exalted pianism of Rachmaninoff himself. Throughout, the poetic imagery of this music is to the fore; the notes are given meaning within a narrative context and Lugansky's command of sonority keeps the listener attuned to the fine gradations of tone he produces. There is much spontaneity of nuance; at the same time these interpretations sound carefully crafted and the outcome of a genuine emotional identification between composer and interpreter. A rhapsodic structure such as the C minor, Op.39 No.7 is given weight, poise and purpose where in other hands it can appear merely a collection of diverse vignettes. When the heroic style is called for, as in the E flat Etude of Op.33, Lugansky certainly does not disappoint; his playing is incisive and large-scale, with plenty of glitter and power.

Eliane Rodrigues: pianist, composer, conductor
Eliane Rodrigues was born in Rio de Janeiro. At the age of 6, she played a Haydn concerto with the Orquestra Sinfonica Brasileira under the direction of Eleazar de Carvalho, which was also broadcast on television, and the Mozart concerto KV488. She studied ao with Arnaldo Estrella (piano soloist, pupil of Alfred Cortot and friend of Villa Lobos), won the jury's "special prize" at the Van Cliburn competition in the USA and was prizewinner in the Queen Elisabeth Competition (the first and sole brazilian in the history) with Beethoven's 4th, a performance that is still talked about by listeners and TV viewers. Since then she has been a favourite with Belgian, Dutch, and German audiences and has performed in over 20 countries. Her intelligent and genial musical feeling permits a repertory of 51 piano concertos. She has recorded 25 CDs. After several years of absence, due to a disease and family affairs, she is back, riper and refined. Her characteristics have remained unchanged : simplicity and spontaneity, feeling and imagination, technique, perfection without affectation, a delight for the eye and ear. In February 1998 Rodrigues Bach-CD was recorded. The critics describe her improvisations and paraphrases on works for the organ as: "The sonorities go back to the scale of more than 3 centuries of piano literature and link perfectly well up with the richness in colour of an independent way of pianistic thinking, they have their own new life, a fascinating transfiguration, full of phantasy."

Daniel Martyn Lewis performed an all-Bach program for his North American premiere. The Formal Opening Night Gala concert featured the spectacular Russian pianist Andrei Gavrilov , returning for his 25th anniversary season, in a stirring concert of Bach and Chopin. Gold medalist of the famed Tchaikovsky Competition, Gavrilov was one of the first young Russians to appear in America. Illustrious piano performances were likewise presented by Agustin Anievas John Bayless Bernadene Blaha Victor Borge Mirian Conti Kevin Fitz-Gerald Kemal Gekic Carlo Grante Alain Jacquon Francine Kay Piers Lane Valentina Lisitsa Hamish Milne Pedja Muzijevic Juana Zayas Thomas Hrynkiw , and Yamaha artists Frederic Chiu and Anne-Marie McDermott "Every year seems to be another knock-out. Yamaha has been a major sponsor of the Newport Music Festival since 1987. I can't imagine doing this festival without them," Malkovich admits. "Yamaha has been so helpful. The pianos always arrive on time, properly tuned, and with 64 concerts spread over 17 days, that's extremely important to us. Logistically, it was flawless, and much of that was due to the cooperation of Yamaha."
John Bayless at The Breakers The Newport Music Festival, long synonymous with outstanding classical performances in a Rhode Island community renowned for seaside elegance, garnered yet another accolade last February. For the second consecutive year, it was chosen by Cadogan Press as one of "America's Elite 1000 - The Ultimate List," placing Newport in company with just 19 other national events including the Academy Awards, the U.S. Open Tennis Tournament, and The Metropolitan Opera.
