An interpretation of the composer's relationship with the Soviet regime

Part Three: The Protest Music
In an official symposium on the composer in 1954, Ilya Ehrenburg, encoding his meaning in the way customary under such circumstances, observed: "Posterity will not be able to understand our difficult and glorious period of life without intently listening to the works of Sergei Prokofiev, and contemplating his extraordinary fate." Had Ehrenburg said this about Shostakovich, few Western pundits (in recent years, at least) would have missed what he was getting at. Applying similar criteria to Prokofiev, however, is still quite a new idea. Though much of his brisk arrogance was curbed by the adversity of his final years, Prokofiev remained fundamentally self-centred, interested chiefly in his own inner world. His capacity, or desire, to empathise with the lot of other people being limited, it is hardly surprising that, compared with Shostakovich, his work should be thinner on tragic subtexts. All too often brilliantly one-dimensional, a large part of Prokofiev's music is that of a clever, derisive child, achieving its best effects in the context of fairy-tale, romanticised history, or nostalgia for boyhood. As with Ravel, whom he particularly admired, Prokofiev's engagement with the practical world of adulthood was reluctant (and often sarcastically ill-tempered). Unlike Ravel, however, it was his "extraordinary fate" to be forced to see far enough beyond his own predicament for his creativity to deepen in spite of itself. Whatever else it did to him, life in the USSR made him grow up.

  • Ralph Kirkpatrick ( Comments by mocfujita ; I did not expect to be able to listen to this performance by Ralph Kirkpatrick until October 1997. And I was surprised at the value of the performance. Many of us including me thought him as professor or researcher not as performer. He made the great works of editing scores and analyzing the music. But in my opinion Ralph Kirkpatrick was better than Wanda Landowska as harpsichord player for the Goldberg Variations. Glenn Gould did not mention this at all. I don't know why.
However this recording was not only for the Goldberg Variations but also for all the four practices for clavier by Bach. I think that he did not have any intension to give a world-wide publication to the Goldberg Variations. Anyway this CD was made by digitizing the master tapes ( Ampex 402B ; 38 cm/sec ) of 1952 in 1996. Wows have been eliminated. Noises have been removed. It is like a newly recorded CD. As to the performance, there is no repeat, so all are A-B-. It is not a virtuoso type, but clear and beautiful.

Prepared for the comfort and enjoyment of music lovers by the Court Composer for the king of Poland and Selected Governor of Saechs, Director of Music in Leipzig von Johann Sebastian Bach. Published by Verlegung Balthasar Schmids in Nurnberg.
The year of composition In the Leipzig era, in 1741 or 1742 of Bach's matured age. In the same era, the Well-Tempered Clavier volume 2 was published. But this volume No.2 contains works which were composed some more years before, so they were not completed in a limited term with concentration. Moreover, at that time " the Art of Fugue" was been under composition parallelly with the Goldberg. It means more.

    Piano Andrei Gavrilov
was born in Moscow in 1955. He won first prize in the 1974 International Tchaikovsky Competition and in the same year made a triumphant international dèbut at the Salzburg Festival. He has subsequently enjoyed a distinguished international career which has included performances with many of the world's greatest orchestras. Andrei Gavrilov made his London debut in 1976 with Paavo Berglund and the Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra in the Royal Festival Hall. In 1978 he performed with the Berlin Philharmonic in a major European concert tour. By 1980 he had performed in all the major cultural centres in the world. Andrei Gavrilov made a triumphant return to the British concert platform in 1984, after a politically enforced absence, giving recitals at the Barbican and the Royal Festival Hall. He successfully petitioned Mikhail Gorbachev for his freedom, and became the first Soviet artist to be granted permission to stay in the West without having to file for political asylum. Following his Carnegie Hall debut in 1985, Andrei Gavrilov was proclaimed as a major artist by New York Times' Donal Henahan. He has since performed with orchestras in New York, Chicago, Philadelphia and Montreal, London, Vienna, Paris, Berlin, Munich, Amsterdam and Tokyo, with conductors including Abbado, Haitink, Muti, Ozawa, Svetlanov and Tennstedt. Recent engagements include recitals in Warsaw, San Sebastian, Bilbao, Rome, Tallinn, Athens and Lisbon.
