Together they mounted an innovative touring partnership that would enable them to perform in out-of-the-way communities throughout Canada where the stars of the classical music world rarely venture. In 1994, with the aid of Jane Colwell of Colwell Arts Management, and with start-up funds from the J.W. McConnell Family Foundation, the ambitious ten-year project known as Piano Six was launched.
What we hope to accomplish When the project began, our hope was that Piano Six tours would benefit rural classical music lovers, young and old, in a number of ways. By sending world renowned pianists into small or isolated communities, we hoped struggling classical music presenters would find it easier to attract and build audiences for their concert series. We even dared hope that communities that did not have an ongoing classical concert series might be inspired to start one, using annual visits by Piano Six How it works In order to make this remarkable musical endeavour possible, each

February 2, 2005 The wondrous "comeback kid" JANINA FIALKOWSKA steps in to save the day! Thomas Dausgaard, conductor Janina Fialkowska, piano February 12 at 8 pm, Roy Thomson Hall February 13 at 3 pm, George Weston Recital Hall Toronto, Ontario Thomas Dausgaard leads the Orchestra in this rich programme, which begins with Beethoven 's rustic Contradances and his searching and dramatic Fourth Piano Concerto , performed by the fabulous Janina Fialkowska Schumann's Second Symphony was written when the composer was suffering from mental illness, and there are undertones of darkness in this magnificent music. Radu Lupu, who was originally scheduled to perform Beethoven's First Piano Concerto, had to cancel due to minor surgery. The last time Canadian pianist Janina Fialkowska Janina's extraordinary spirit was long apparent before her recent comeback, however. In 1994, Piano Six was launched, which won the 2000 Chalmers Foundation's 2000 National Music Award. Piano Six is a touring program that brings classical music to Canada's small or isolated communities. Piano Six founding members are Janina Fialkowska, Marc-André Hamelin, André Laplante, Angela Cheng, Angela Hewitt, and Jon Kimura Parker. As demand grew, the roster expanded to include Bernadene Blaha, Michael Kim, Stéphane Lemelin and the Blaha/FitzGerald Piano Duo. During the ten-year life of this project, each artist has pledged to take time out from his or her busy international career to tour solo for ten days each year for Piano Six , performing in a different region each year. In order to give as many communities as possible a chance to participate in these extraordinary tours, the artists offer their services to the project for a fraction of their recital fees. Says Piano Six founder Janina Fialkowska, "we're especially anxious to reach out to those communities who think - quite wrongly -that they're too small or too far away to attract a major concert artist". One of the project's special features is that artists are made available to host communities for not only a public recital but also some form of educational out-reach event, such as a school mini-concert, a masterclass for area piano students or a teachers' workshop. Fialkowska admits thatthetoursinvolve "unbelievable amounts of work - some of us go out for ten days and give twenty-two performances". As mentally and physically challenging as these tours can be, however, she and her colleagues feel strongly that their efforts are repaid by the enjoyment and satisfaction that they derive from their personal encounters with music lovers all across the country. Indeed, for the members of this extraordinary sextet

JANINA FIALKOWSKA
Back to Opening Day Recordings Back to Opening Day Entertainment Group Janina Fialkowska Pianist Canadian-born Janina Fialkowska has been recognized world-wide as one of the leading pianists of her generation for her exceptional artistry. She appears regularly as guest soloist with leading orchestras, including the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra of Amsterdam, the Israel Philharmonic, the Chicago Symphony, Cleveland Orchestra, Los Angeles Philharmonic, Minnesota and Philadelphia Orchestras and the symphony orchestras of Pittsburgh, Montreal, Toronto as well as all the major London orchestras - all to unreserved acclaim. Her recitals in the major music centers of North America and Europe have been equally lauded. Ms. Fialkowska's collaboration with Daniel Lichti includes tours of Schubert, Brahms, Beethoven and Schumann and represent a rare opportunity to hear this gifted artist turn her talents to the intimate, yet equally demanding repertoire of German Lieder. She has won special recognition for concerto premieres by Franz Liszt (Op. Posthumous) Libby Larsen and Sir Andrzej Panufnik (American premiere). Born in Montreal to a Canadian mother and a Polish father, Janina Fialkowska began piano studies at the age of five. She entered the Ecole de Musique Vincent d'Indy, Montreal and studied privately in Paris. After pursuing advanced studies at New York's Juilliard School of Music, Janina Fialkowska was a top prize winner at the First International Arthur Rubinstein Master Piano Competition in Israel. It was Rubinstein himself who brought the music of Szymanowski to her attention.

34. A Conversation With Jon Kimura Parker
Classical pianist Jon Kimura Parker Interview by James Reel in Fanfare, Arctic circle as part of Piano Six, a project started by janina fialkowska.
http://www.kimura.com/fanfare.html
Fanfare
September/October 1997 , Volume: 21 , # 1 A Conversation with Jon Kimura Parker By James Reel His bio makes you think that Jon Kimura Parker is a perfectly ordinary, respectable pianist. The Vancouver-born musician did, after all, win the prestigious 1984 Leeds International Piano Competition. But do a little digging, and you start to wonder about the guy. Parker has trekked to the Canadian Arctic to play an Alanis Morissette song on an electronic keyboard for Inuit students. He says that if he ever writes another piece of music, it may well be for a rock band. (A friend described his first and so far only composition as "a combination of Ravel, the theme from Mission:Impossible, and Earth, Wind and Fire.) In Australia, he once worked the theme from The X-Files into the cadenza of a Mozart concerto. Not only does he eschew a jacket on stage, but he has even performed a very few times in a Star Trek uniform. So I called him at his New York apartment and, forgetting what little I once knew about tact, demanded, "Are you kind of weird, or what?" "But you shouldn't take it off the deep end, either. I constantly find myself in a state of debate about my role as a performer: am I an educator or an entertainer or something in between? I think a lot of musicians, for example in Europe, are much more `serious' in their intent. They want to convince the few educated connoisseurs in the audience that this type of phrasing is most appropriate to this time of Beethoven's life or something. Now, those matters are important to me, too, but privately. Onstage I don't feel that emphasizing all that is communicative. There are better ways to get the point across. Mozart absolutely was some kind of a practical jokester, and he used the popular songs of his day in some of his performances, so I think it's stylistically correct now to put something like The X-Files into a Mozart cadenza."

    Polish spirit comes alive
    By Jeremy Strub

In classical concert there are times when rare connections are made between the artist and the audience. On Saturday April 3, 2004, pianist Janina Fialkowska made a connection that was instantaneously felt by the audience. A feeling of one's own heritage being used to convey the artist's intentions. Beginning with Grieg's Lyric Pieces, Ms. Fialkowska quickly established a wide dynamic of what the evening would be like. Using the tragic lilting nuances of the Arietta, the carefree abandon of the Somerfugl, and the brooding superiority of the Troltog - or March Of The Trolls - Ms. Fialkowska quickly established an artistic control that would reach the audience and keep them in her grasp.
