Best Classical CDs of 2004
by Peter Burwasser
1. Crumb
Complete Crumb Edition, Vol. 7: Unto the Hills, Black Angels (Bridge) Unto the Hills . This performance is separated by more than 30 years from the masterpiece Black Angels , written in the Vietnam era for amplified string quartet. Time has not diminished the astonishing power of this landmark work. 2. Feinberg
Nikolaos Samaltanos, Christophe Sirodeau, piano
Piano Sonatas 7-12 (Bis) A generation of major Russian musicians were hidden from the Western world during the time of Stalin, including the pianist and composer Samuil Feinberg. His music is drenched with Scriabin-like chromaticism and great density, but like the music of Scriabin and Rachmaninoff, his grand vision builds a firm, powerful structure from a mountain of notes. 3. Vivaldi
The English Concert; Andrew Manze, violin and director
Concertos for the Emperor (Harmonia Mundi) Andrew Manze is a second-generation period instrumentalist, with no axe to grind but the desire to make the music come alive. This he does with gusto, as in these bracing, incisive performances of Vivaldi's sparkling scores. 4. Mozart

Mikolajus Ciurlionis Preludes
Leonid Sabaneyev Sonata 'in Memory of Scriabin' Performer Jonathan Powell , born in 1969 in Lancashire, started playing the piano at the age of six and in 1979 was awarded a choral scholarship to Magdalen College School, Oxford where he made his first concert appearances. He went on to read music at Cambridge University, during which time he gave numerous performances of standard and contemporary repertory including his own compositions. He has since developed a multi-faceted career as a pianist, composer and musicologist. Among the influences on his pianistic development he acknowledges the guidance of Denis Matthews and Sulamita Aronovsky.
At the age of 18 Jonathan Powell became the first pianist ‚ other than the composer himself ‚ to play Michael Finnissy's virtuosic English Country Tunes, at the BMIC in London. The following year he performed the work again, alongside Charles Ives' Concord Sonata, Ferneyhough's Lemma-Icon-Epigram and his own works at the Brighton Festival and at the Dartington Summer School.

Here are four different recital programs that I will present during the next season. For bookings, see the Contact page! SCRIABIN and followers In this program, the great Russian romantic Alexander Scriabin surrounds three lesser known, but highly interesting composers that were deeply influenced by him: Nikolay Roslavets, harassed and finally silenced by the Soviet regime; Samuil Feinberg, beloved teacher, pianist and composer at the Moscow conservatory, whose important music is slowly having a renaissance in later years; and finally Kaikhosru Shapurji Sorabji, a legend among pianophiles, whose Transcendental Studies integrate influences from Scriabin, Busoni, Godovsky and others in a highly original and pianistically fantastic musical world. RHYTHM and NOCTURNE A program where the two halves contrast as day and night. In first half, the joy of rhythm and rhythmic experiments is in the centre, from Bartók's arrangments of Hungarian folk music, via Kevin Volans' recent, clever Rhythmic Etudes to the polyrhythmic fireworks of Polar Prize winner György Ligeti. The second half is a composed program where Nocturnes of Chopin are linked with night music by John Cage, James McMillan and George Crumb to form one single continuous and suggestive dream landscape.

(Redirected from Stalin Prize Stalin Prize medal State Prize medal The USSR State Prize Russian :Госуда́рственная пре́мия СССР) was the Soviet Union 's highest civilian honour. It was established on September 9 During the State Stalin Prize (Государственная Сталинская премия), usually called Stalin Prize, existed. (Some sources give an incorrect termination date of 1952) It essentially played the same role, therefore upon the establishment of the USSR State Prize the diplomas and badges of the recipients of Stalin Prize were changed to that of USSR State Prize. USSR State Prize of 1st, 2nd and 3rd degrees was awarded annually individuals in the fields of science, mathematics, literatature, arts, and architecture to honour the most prominent achievements which either advanced the Soviet Union or the cause of socialism. Often the prize was awarded to specific works rather than to individuals. Each constituent Soviet republic also had the State Prize (resp. Stalin Prize).

Recording Well Tempered Clavier Book I BWV 846-869 Sergey Schepkin (piano) Ongaku Part 1 Donald Satz wrote (September 4, 1999):
As promised, this begins my thorough review of WTC, Book I and Sergey Schepkin's new recording on Ongaku. First, some overall comments about the WTC. If you look at this body of works as a series of "miniatures", either you're not "getting it" or the performances are not sufficiently insightful. I think of each prelude and fugue as a musical journey through a key , with various emotional messages conveyed from Bach through the pianist: 1. Prelude in C - This is an amazing piece of music. In its elemental state and if played "straight, it can seem analagous to the playing of scales . The pianist's challenge is to dig into the work and bring to the surface as much of what's hidden as possible. Gould surfaces brilliantly the excitement, drive, and energy of the piece, while Jarrett surfaces the trance-like features. Schepkin plays the prelude well with a commanding bass line, and I did feel that I had been on a journey. But, he does not reach the heights displayed by Gould or Jarrett. On a scale of 1 to 4, Schepkin rates 2. Fugue in C - I call this the "steamroller" fugue. I look in a performance for the inexorable steam rolling effect of the bass line and the highlighting of the contrapuntal features. Schepkin does not succeed here. There's no magic - just a straight run-thru.

I see that you have no recording of Rach's Variations on a Theme of Corelli. Have you heard it? Would you rate Alicia deLarrocha and Ruth Laredo in your list of Good and Bad? Very nice website and informative. By the way! I have a snippet of piano music which no one can seem to identify. I recorded it from a classical radio station in 1980. Then it gathered dust. Recently, I sent a tape copy of it to the station nd they are a blank. Same for Capital University here in Columbus OH. Want to try? What's your mailing address? I'll send it. Samuil (Samuel) Evgenievitch Feinberg (1890-1962), who was born in Odessa, will be a new name to many. And those who are familiar with Feinberg are more likely to have come across him as a pianist rather than as a composer. His recordings of piano music from Bach to Scriabin belong to the history of pianism and are still being reissued. Feinberg was certainly a remarkably gifted pianist but he saw himself, above all, as a composer. The performers on this disc - pianists Nikolaos Samaltanos and Christophe Sirodeau who have already done so much to promote the music of Skalkottas on BIS - argue that Feinberg's own music has been very unjustly neglected, largely on account of the political conditions prevailing in the Soviet Union during so much of his lifetime.
