    YOU have to feel for Richard Rodzinski, the executive director of the Van
    Cliburn Foundation. Mr. Rodzinski, the son of the famed conductor Artur
    Rodzinski and a thoughtful administrator with a palpable devotion to the art
    of piano playing, finds himself in a quandary. In 1989, when he took over
    the foundation, which sponsors the quadrennial Van Cliburn International
    Piano Competition in Fort Worth, he knew that such competitions were increasingly considered antithetical to the cause of musical artistry. The Cliburn Competition, the biggest in terms of prizes and visibility, drew particular criticism. Why? Dubiel) received her musical education at the Shepherd School of Music at Rice University , Houston, Texas and at Texas Christian University in Fort Worth. Ruede studied violin with Raphael Fliegel, Ronald Patterson and Eudice Shapiro at Rice Ms. Shapiro was for two competitions one of the chosen accompanists for Van Cliburn Piano Competition chamber performances and with Kenneth Schanewerk and Sin Tung Chiu in Fort Worth. She has attended chamber music and orchestral institutes from Florida to California, and is a free-lance professional violinist as well as an alumna of the Brazos Valley String Quartet. Ruede is also a graduate of the master's level archives program, once History department, TCU, and holds a master's degree in Library Science from Texas Woman's University. Ruede comes from a musical family: brother Clay, Fort Worth-raised cellist, was taught by TCU's Harriet Woldt and, as a founding member of the Arden Piano Trio , was featured on the "Cliburn at the Kimbell" concert series in 1984. The Competition , first held in 1962, was initially organized in Fort Worth to commemorate Van Cliburn's sensational 1958 victory at the first Tchaikovsky Competition in Moscow.
