STAR TELEGRAM CLASSICAL MUSIC CRITIC Boy wonder
A Houston piano prodigy with ties to TCU gets two high-profile Metroplex concerts
At 17, he's tall, blond, a little on the husky side - the sort of friendly, unassuming kid you might see ambling to football practice at a typical American high school. But you won't see Adam Golka hanging around the practice field. "Everything for me is related to music," he says in a recent interview in the Walsh complex at Texas Christian University, where he's finishing his second year in the three-year artist diploma program for musicians. A prodigy who won the Shanghai International Piano Competition, Golka will join the Fort Worth Symphony and conductor Miguel HarthBedoya for Rachmaninoff's Piano Concerto No. 3 on Saturday at Concerts in the Garden. One week later, he'll join conductor Lawrence Loh and the Dallas Symphony to perform U57t'S Piano Concerto No. 1 at the Morton H. Meyerson Symphony Center in Dallas. Though performing with both of the region's full-time professional orchestras within a single season isn't unheard of among touring artists, this may well mark the first time that a 17-year-old has been featured soloist with both orchestras in such a short span. "I was struck by the absolute ease lie possessed at the piano," says Fort Worth conductor Harth-Bedoya, who asked Golka to play in a private audition at the Cliburn Recital Hall downtown earlier this spring. Several local musicians whom Harth-Bedoya trusts had recommended that he listen to Golka.

Ronald E. Moore
Composer and Poet
Moore's first recordings were of a different nature from the refined classical style which graces his current work. Back in the early '60s, he had a number one rock'n'roll hit and several other popular tunes, such as When the Dance is Over, Your Turn to Cry, When you Lose your Love and others. In those days, he thrilled audiences by playing piano, guitar, tenor sax and upright bass by turn while he sang. When away from the piano, Moore is a health care executive , serves on numerous business and non-profit boards and is a human rights activist involved in Amnesty International International Campaign for Tibet Texas Christian University and other venues.

An abbreviated version of this review appears in the Salinas Californian on Monday, November 13, 2000.]
The sparks really flew Sunday afternoon in Carmel's Sunset Center as Van Cliburn gold medallist José Feghali appeared as soloist in a fiery performance of the Tchaikowsky Piano Concerto No. 1. This was the second concert in the 2000-2001 season of the Monterey Symphony under the direction of its new Music Director, Kate Tamarkin. If you can only attend one Monterey Symphony concert this season, don't miss this one! Although this occasion marks the first appearance for José Feghali locally, he is certainly no stranger to the Tchaikowsky B-flat Minor Piano Concerto, for it was his winning performance of this work with the Ft. Worth Symphony that pushed him over the top in the finals of the Seventh Van Cliburn International Competition in 1985. Looking perpetually young (Feghali is 40 but looks 20), he brings a youthful ardor to this work, approaching its grandeur with a gorgeous big tone and masterful technical skills. In addition to a whirlwind performance of the many bravura passages, Feghali proved in the lyrical sections (and especially the beautifully shaped melodies in the second movement) that in addition to his magnificent bravura he also has the ability to play quite poetically. One of the magic moments of the first movement was at the end of the cadenza where he lingered lovingly and with exquisite soft dynamics on the passage just before the orchestra reentered.
