11. Press Reviews
Special to the StarTelegram ADDISON - pianist jose feghali turned into maestrojose feghali on Saturday concertos by Haydn and Mozart from the piano.
http://www.texaschamberorchestra.org/review.htm
Review: Texas Chamber Orchestra takes joy in precision with Hadyn, Mozart works 12:59 AM CST on Sunday, November 9, 2003 By OLIN CHISM / The Dallas Morning News Mr. Feghali is the orchestra's new artistic adviser. It was clear from the opening notes on Saturday that he has a fine group to work with. The Texas Chamber Orchestra is an alert and precise group of professionals who project a real musical personality. The pianistic part of the concert was Haydn's Concerto in D major, Hoboken listing XVIII:11, and Mozart's Concerto No. 21 in C major, K. 467. Mr. Feghali was the soloist; he conducted from the piano. From both piano and orchestra there was crisp, precise playing that beautifully captured the high spirits of Haydn's wonderful concerto. The only real negative was the dry acoustics of the theater, which gave the instruments extraordinary clarity of sound but robbed them of the projection and resonance that let a performance bloom. A lesser orchestra would have been cruelly exposed, but the precision of the Texas Chamber Orchestra was such that exposure was no bother. There was a minor annoyance: A group of noisy latecomers delayed the start of the slow movement.

Pianist Angelina Gadeliya is the first of six winners of the Oberlin Concerto Competition to be featured in Con Portraits this year. She recently performed Beethoven's Concerto No. 4 with the Oberlin Chamber Orchestra in Finney Chapel.
Angelina Gadeliya, 22, calls Colorado Springs, Colorado, home. When she visits her family, she often joins her four younger sisters for impromptu concerts. But her first home was the town where she was born, Sukhumi, Georgia, and where she began piano lessons, at the age of six, with Alla Golovco. When she was seven, her family moved to the Ukraine, and she continued her lessons with Elena Chebrova until her family immigrated to the United States in 1990. The Gadeliyas settled first in South Dakota, and Angelina began piano studies with Arlene Krueger. Now, in her senior year at Oberlin, she studies with Associate Professor of Piano Angela Cheng. The two have worked together for five years; Angelina followed Cheng to Oberlin from the University of Colorado in 1998.

Biography

American cellist Daniel Gaisford, regarded as one of today's most gifted and communicative musicians, has won acclaim from critics and audiences alike for his consummate musicianship, charismatic presence on stage and dazzling technical command. He has collaborated recently with pianist Helene Grimaud. They both agreed their collaboration was such "magic," that they plan to continue working together. Gaisford has also collaborated with pianist Jose Feghali, Andre Previn, Gil Shaham, and many other distinguished musicians.
Also an avid outdoorsman, Gaisford spent a couple of years in the wilderness – with only his cello and a few mule deer, coyote and other wild animals to keep him company. During his time spent reconnecting with nature, his sound emerged even more refined and mature, and his commitment to music even stronger. "I realized during that time that this is what I am supposed to do. I am a cellist."
To Gaisford, making music is only part of what it means to be a cellist. He enjoys relating to people, engaging audiences of all ages, and sharing his knowledge of music with them. He is a highly charismatic performer, an engaging and articulate speaker, loves to give master classes. "That’s what it is all about, really," he says. "Sharing. Not just going on stage, doing your thing, then leaving. Sure, it’s great to be able to make great music, but I want to do more. I try to connect with the audience."
