JULY 2004 : (Directed by Louis Schwartzberg; Disney) This documentary tribute to the spirit and gumption of contemporary American society takes the form of a cross-country odyssey on which we meet an intrepid, albeit blind, mountain-climber; a gutsy rug-weaver; the pioneer who founded Ben & Jerry’s, and many, many more typical Americans. Disney rejected another documentary dealing with American society—a little number called "Fahrenheit 9/11"and opted to put its money on this arguably more patriotic project instead. We booked a deviation on American Air Lines to insure our frequent flier mileage and so that we could chose our isle seats both going and coming back. Diane and I both need seating on the isle because of physical demands. She must have extra legroom for her right leg or she gets back pains and I am a large man and need some extra shoulder space on long flights. Boy did this trip qualify there. Needless to say we had to get up well before dawn to catch a flight to Dallas so we could wait about 4 1/2 hr. for a flight that was held on the ground for a thunderstorm. The flight to London went well in the new 777 and other than the fact we were covering 6 time zones plus the two from Sacramento, which plays hob with eating schedules and gets you into Gatwick airport at 9Am with no sleep at least for us, neither of us can sleep on a plane, and a further 2 ½ hr. bus ride to Harwich to catch the ship. The check in at Harwich went much faster and was more organized than when we sailed from here on the Splendor Of The Seas about 5years ago. Practice pays off.

A season of promise
After a spring and summer of discontent, moviegoers eager for onscreen quality and substance are hoping for more generous gleanings this fall from a manly crop of films.
By STEVE PERSALL, Times Staff Writer published September 4, 2003 [Photo: 20th Century Fox] Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World [Photo: Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer] Out of Time [Photo: Miramax Films] Kill Bill: Volume 1 [Photo: Buena Vista Pictures] Under the Tuscan Sun [Photo: Universal Pictures] [Photo: 20th Century Fox] Runaway Jury [Photo: Curb Entertainment] Dummy Finally, the 2003 movie year is heading for a fall. Things already have been going downhill. This year may turn out the most profitable and least nourishing crop of films ever, thanks to higher ticket prices and diminishing quality on the screen. After too many forgettable spring and summer releases, here comes autumn, possibly made glorious only because an accelerated Academy Awards voting schedule may push a few contenders our way.

New recordings add sizzle to Latin Jazz
By JON POSES Published Sunday, May 22, 2005 The point is that we have this music and in this case we have, specifically - and happily so - a gargantuan amount of Latin jazz, a scene that’s bursting at the seams and blossoming in so many directions that it’s hard to keep track of it all. That said, we also have a tendency in these here United States to lump all Latin jazz into just that - one category, one kind of music - Latin jazz. Concord Records has probably been at the forefront of recording Latin jazz and demonstrates an effort to document and make available this music to the mainstream. In 1980, the label, which was founded and run by the late Carl Jefferson - who made his fortune as a car salesmen - created a subsidiary, Concord Picante. To the label’s credit, it started a separate division specifically for Latino artists.

The Original Memphis Five opened the program with "T'Ain't Cold" from the collection, "Red Nichols and Miff Mole" from Retrieval/Challenge RTR 79010, which brings together a number of selections by various Red/Miff ensembles, including The Six Hottentots, the Arkansas Travelers as well as the Original Memphis Five. Larry Clinton's arrangement of "The Snake Charmer" is included on Hep CD1037, one of three Clinton collections on the Hep label. "Lazy River" from Flip Phillips was included in Verve's reissue of the 78 RPM album, "The Jazz Scene," issued originally in a limited edition by Norman Granz in the late 1940s. The two-CD set is Verve 314 521 661. I think this was kind of an eccentric set when it first appeared and the reissue does nothing to soften the impression; some of the music has that very post-war self-conscious texture about it. "You Got the Best Of Me" was another track by Frank Sinatra, Connie Haines, the Pied Pipers, with the Tommy Dorsey Orchestra, taken from a very listenable collection of airchecks issued by Masters of Jazz in its Sinatra series; this is MJCD 166. and we heard other selections from it a few weeks earlier.
