From his self produced debut Small Moments to the number one hit Square 1 and his newest offering The Big Romance he demonstrates beautiful melodies, deft song writing, and a grasp of arrangement that defies his years. Simply unmissable. "I doubt I'll see a better gig all year" - Hot Press www.davidkitt.com Neil Cooney Recently hailed by Tamas Vasary as having a very rare and special poetic talent, Neil is making his mark as one of the most distinctive pianists of his generation. Neil was awarded a scholarship to the Royal Academy of Music, London where he received the Anna Instone Award for the Outstanding Musician Graduating from a British Conservatoire. The unusual poetic and emotional presence in his playing mark Neil as a pianist of rare ability. His Sligo performance will feature works by Bethoven, Bach, Chopin and Liszt. Pete Courtney With an ever-growing fan base since his 2001 Witness performance, this Monaghan born alternative singer/songwriter has just enjoyed his best year to date. MURDERBALL (R) See review on Page 32. * APRES VOUS (R, 110 minutes) In this French romantic comedy, Daniel Auteuil plays sweet, hapless Antoine, a headwaiter who can't say no to anyone. When he saves Louis (Jose Garcia) from hanging himself, he realizes he also has to solve the man's life problems. This means helping Louis get a job and reunite with Blanche (Sandrine Kiberlain), the florist-girlfriend who dumped him. There isn't much to the movie, and you can see where it's going from kilometers away. But Auteuil, who has been a wonderful grace note in French cinema for decades, is delightful, with a slight aversion of the eyes here, a momentary hesitation in the voice there. And Garcia makes a nice partner, too, a comically depressed mope who steadfastly refuses to accept happiness. Contains sexual situations and some obscenity.

NEWSLETTER FOR THE JIM CULLUM JAZZ BAND
AND RIVERWALK, LIVE FROM THE LANDING PUBLIC RADIO SERIES
April 2002
Jim Cullum by Jim Cullum Almost all my musical adventures are tangled up with my efforts to build a great jazz band and then to present the band's wares. So, it is a rare thing to go off to the wilds without the troops, and naturally these very occasional sojourns are filled with a degree of novelty and charm for me. After three tours, I am beginning to find a second home "Down Under." It was in this high good spirit that I sailed through my 38th consecutive New Year's Eve bash at The Landing, and set out for Australia. Left: Bob Barnard. Photo © Don Mopsick These days Bob doesn't live up to his drinking reputation. He is fit and healthy and strides around his Sydney neighborhood with great vigor. I have found that, as is sometimes the case, the stories have got bigger in the telling or Bob has calmed down 80% or so. After a couple of days of chasing him around "Crow's Nest" (that's the name of his Sydney neighborhood) we headed off, flying to Queensland, mostly to the city of Brisbane which is drop dead charming, I'd say. With a winding lovely river snaking all through town, it is not unlike San Antonio, except the river is some 100 times as wide. Big boats zoom up and down taking citizens up and down, and in typical Aussie fashion they all seem to be having a lovely time

The Band's Perfect Goodbye
A Behind-the-Scenes Report
by Emmett Grogan
On December 6, 1969, I attended a concert at a race track in Livermore, near Altamont, California. Three hundred thousand people gathered on the grounds to see and hear rock performers on a crowded stage. Several cameramen were positioned at various angles to record the event as part of a documentary on The Rolling Stones' concert tour of America. One of the cameramen got lucky. His lens was focused on the right place at the right time. The scene he recorded the murder of an audience member by Hell's Angels "security men" became the dramatic highlight of the documentary Gimme Shelter . Like the photographing of this scene, the Altarnont concert itself had happened by accident. And most of it went wrong. Nothing was planned. Everything was winged, improvised on the spot. Like life. Like death. Six years passed before I went to another concert in the San Francisco Bay area, and this was an orchestrated event in which nothing was left to be played by ear, not even the music. The Band's Last Waltz was as calculated as a pension. Every aspect of the production was carefully charted, as were the planets governing the stars. Nothing was overlooked or given space to simply happen . The planning was meticulous, the affair thoroughly cased, like a Willie Sutton bank job.
