New French Song Twenty new settings of French words by British composers
Alison Smart (Soprano) Katharine Durran (Piano)
Review of the Première : New French Song on the South Bank How often do you get twenty British premières in one concert in one evening? Probably very rarely, if ever. Congratulations then to soprano Alison Smart and pianist Katharine Durran for devising such a fascinating programme under the title New French Song. For their Purcell Room recital on 13 July they commissioned twenty British composers to set music to any French literature of their choice from the past 200 years. The selected texts covered a wide range of writers from the Romantics and Symbolists right through to the post-Modern era; one of the composers, Edward McGuire, chose to set his own text to music. The result was a medley of songs on the subjects of life, death, memory, youth, the Tour de France and even a rather bizarre dinner menu! What was very interesting about this concert was each composer's personal response to the imagery and language within their chosen text and whether they chose to pay homage to the French harmonic language and textures of the past or to go a different route. Gabriel Jackson's setting of

Classical Spanish Songs Maria Dolores Campos (soprano)

Maria Dolores Campos
The music presented on this disc is romantic and colourful, strongly identified as representing the quintessence of Spain. The songs were all composed during the first half of the twentieth century. Each song gives a vivid glimpse of scenes from everyday life. Maria Dolores Campos is from Vallodolid in Central Spain, and her delightful, authoritative Spanish personality shines through in these performances. Oscar Esplá 's Canciones playeras are fishermen's songs based on the music of Alicante, but using a musical scale of Esplá's own design. They provide an arresting opening to this collection, being the first recording made with piano (rather than orchestral) accompaniment. Listeners familiar with Victoria de los Angeles's recording with orchestra may well appreciate the heightened clarity and rhythmic vitality which the piano writing allows. The lively songs of Fernando Obrador 's Canciones clásicas españolas , are justly well-known and well-loved, providing the perfect foil to Frederic Mompou 's understated and serenely beautiful trilogy Combat de Somni Manuel de Falla (who was to Spanish Twentieth Century music as Bartok and Kodály were to Hungarian) is here represented by three folksongs from his

Audio Clip (G minor Audio Clip (D major) Review "Thank goodness the bad old days are over when it seemed politically incorrect to play Bach on the piano. A very special disc.... Katharine Durran's name was as unfamiliar to me as her playing, but on the evidence of her recent disc of the complete Toccatas she's a Bachian of luminous integrity and unforced nobility, who captures his capriciousness and occasional obsessiveness with equal insight" PIANO, November/December 1999 Click here for :
Museyroom Review
These beautiful works, often overlooked within the repertoire, contain all the quintessential elements of Bach at his very best. Dramatic and moving, they have been described as a celebration of, and an insight into, the composer's moving spirit, capturing a maelstrom of elation and stillness. The seven Toccatas have rarely been heard as a set, and no traditional order of performance has come down to us. These performances, recorded at St George's Brandon Hill, have been arranged to form a tonal and emotional arc:

It slips and slides as if memories were focusing and blurring all the time - not exactly intimidating just rather leading edge. It echoes with strained memories of children's summer camp meetings in the 1870s-1890s. It has its moments of ecstasy as in the largo - a swelteringly soporific version of 'Yes, Jesus Loves You' - Delian in its irresistible decay. MUSIC FOR SOLO CELLO BACH; BERIO; HENZE; WALTON

David Ayre (double bass) rec 4-5 Aug 1992, Haberdasher's Aske's School, Elstree MERIDIAN DUOCD 89026 Crotchet Meridian has been around for more than twenty years. Inconspicuously and almost surreptitiously they have built a varied catalogue you would do well to trace and trawl. In 1980 their double CD of rarely encountered Housman settings first attracted my attention . Later their two CDs of Bernard Stevens' pair of symphonies and string concertos uncovered a major 'misfit' composer. Walford Davies is likely to remembered (by the generations listening in the forties) for his talks about music on the BBC Third Programme. His music, caught in the jet of time, has a contemporary profile only in relation to Solemn Melody RAF Marchpast and the anthem God Be in My Head . The Walford Davies cycle (otherwise completely unknown) is quite a discovery. There is a pride and an intoxication in this music which quite transcends its ineradicable roots in Brahms and Dvorak. Butterworth is best known for his Shropshire Lad- inspired music both as an orchestral rhapsody and as a song cycle. Brian Rayner Cook broadcast the W.E Henley cycle

Composer of the Week
Judith Weir (b 1954)
Part Two
Tuesday 8 June 2004 0:00-1:00 (Radio 3) Judith Weir has made fruitful use of folk music but, as is typical of composers who have drawn successfully from this source, in a strikingly unique and idiomatic way. Today, in conversation with Judith Weir, Donald Macleod looks at some of the examples of folk music - and folk lore - that turn up in the composer's work. Duration: 1 hour
