41. Rachel Jiménez :: Biography
stephen drury of the New England Conservatory is one person who shaped my playing I am a better pianist today because of the time I spent at Yale.
http://www.racheljimenez.com/bio.php
:: Biography :: Like many other pianists, I began taking piano lessons at the ideal age of five. Today, I enjoy performing new music that is often unfamiliar to audiences and also find equal fulfillment in studying and performing the music of the traditional masters. Playing is an endeavor which I approach with respect and wonder. I am also very passionate about teaching the piano to others. I've found that it requires more than just the ability to play well; it requires a sensitivity to seeing (hearing!) the potential in a student and then using my training, skills, and instinct to bring out the best in them. I have devoted many years to this effort, and many of my lessons are taught with materials that I have developed myself. I find genuine enjoyment in teaching the valuable concepts that I have learned from others and also in finding new ways to communicate them. I'm fortunate to have been taught by some great artists. Stephen Drury of the New England Conservatory is one person who shaped my playing immensely. He helped me to polish my technique a great deal, and I credit my interest in new music entirely to his influence. After graduating from NEC with two piano performance degrees, both with distinction, I went on to get a master's degree in piano performance at Yale University. Boris Berman was my principle instructor there, and it was while in his studio that I studied some repertoire that I had wanted to play for many years. The music of Prokofiev is a particular specialty of Prof. Berman's, and studying the 6th sonata with him was an opportunity I could not pass up. I am a better pianist today because of the time I spent at Yale. Berman's proficiency at teaching the art of the piano helped me to focus and capitalize on my distinctive strengths.

The Debate (9/30/04)
This will be the only post about this debate - rather than create another post for later thoughts, I'll add to this one, noting the day and time of each update. Bush wanted to know what about Poland - can't we count them as part of our mighty coalition? You can click here to find out why he might not want to harp on that response. If you don't feel like following that link, the money quote is "[t]hat they deceived us about the weapons of mass destruction, that's true. We were taken for a ride." That's Aleksander Kwasniewski, president of Poland.

I Do What I Can
There is a paper-thin line between blogging as a break from working on an arduous assignment and blogging to keep from working on an arduous assignment, and I fear that I am near to crossing it. I'll be brief. Professor Muller sees University of North Carolina faculty advocating religious violence and renting their homes to nude models (no, really), and asks a few tough questions. In a spirit of great helpfulness, I will try to answer.

-Lei Liang
Lei Liang - born in November 1972 in Tianjin, China and raised in a musical family in Beijing - received his first piano lessons at the age of four, and began to compose since he was six. His piano teacher Zhou Guang-ren encouraged him to compose without formal composition lessons. Lei Liang received several awards in China for composition and piano performance. Since 1984, his piano compositions have been the required repertoire for Xianghai National Piano Competition and were later chosen to be part of the Chinese National Piano Examinations. In 1989, he was named by Beijing Youth Daily as one of the ten "Persons of the Year".
After attending the Extension Division of the Central Conservatory of Music in Beijing for two years, Lei Liang left for the US in the aftermath of the Tiananmen Square protest. He studied piano with William Race in Austin, Texas. From 1992-1998, he completed both a Bachelor's and a Master's degrees in composition with high academic honors and distinction in performance at the New England Conservatory of Music in Boston where his principal teacher was Robert Cogan. He is currently a Ph.D. candidate at Harvard University studying with Mario Davidovsky.

***1/2 Stephen Drury
FREDERIC RZEWSKI, THE PEOPLE UNITED WILL NEVER BE DEFEATED!
(New Albion)
This is a showpiece in an almost Liszt-like vein Rzewski takes a popular protest melody from Argentina and spins it into nearly an hour's worth of variations that hold your attention, maintain a connection to the original melody, and never violate the spirit of the original song. A tour de force for the composer, who betrays his background as a pianist in his thorough use of the instrument, and also for the performer, pianist Stephen Drury, who plays with an intense calm that is perfectly matched to these intellectual variations on an emotional theme. The CD opens with a brilliant gambit as well: a recording of the song performed in its original setting of Argentina 1975. If what follows weren't as genuine and meaningful as the original, this idea would have destroyed the release. Instead we witness both as expressions of truth what a victory for formal experiment! Embarrassment of riches
Everybody come to Boston in the springtime
BY LLOYD SCHWARTZ Emmanuel Music sings in the spring with a concert performance of Schumann’s rarely heard opera Genoveva , with Craig Smith leading a superb cast including baritone James Maddalena (Emmanuel Church, April 2). Opera Boston returns with Robert Ward’s Pulitzer Prize-winning version of the late Arthur Miller’s play about witch hunts, The Crucible (Cutler Majestic Theatre, April 8 and 10); call (617) 451-9944. Boston Lyric Opera offers a Russian masterpiece, Tchaikovsky’s Eugene Onegin (Shubert Theatre, March 30 through April 12). An Ives Newsletter - 1 April 2004 After an inordinate break there is much news. Read on—enjoy! (Please submit to us your Ives-related news through the “Unanswered Questions” link on the Ives website.) And remember that May 19th this spring is the 50th anniversary of Ives’s death just short of age 80 in New York City (of a stroke following a successful operation for his double hernia). Ives’s Legacy Writing on Nov 3, 2003 on andante.com, Matthew Westphal reported: “The American Academy of Arts and Letters has announced that Stephen Hartke will receive the next Charles Ives Living Award, effective for a three-year term beginning in July 2004. The $225,000 Ives Living is paid in annual installments of $75,000; its purpose (as with the MacArthur Foundation's famous ‘genius grant’ fellowships) is to free the recipient from the need to worry about earning a living so that he or she can concentrate fully on composition. To that end, the winner must agree not to accept any salaried employment for the term of the fellowship. (Commissions may be accepted.)” Wrote Westphal, “The Charles Ives Living was inaugurated in 1998, with Martin Bresnick as the first three-year recipient. Chen Yi received the award in 2001; her term ends next June. The fellowship is funded by royalties from Charles Ives's music, bequeathed by his widow to the American Academy to establish a fund for prizes in composition.”
Ives +50 The Juilliard School The New York Philharmonic will present eleven concerts at Avery Fisher Hall in New York City centered on Ives’s music, May 11-29, 2004. Symphony No. 4 will be heard on May 15, 19, and 20. John Adams conducts on May 21, 22, and 25.
