Stefon Harris and Blackout

"It is amazing to witness such an incredible talent on an instrument with a signature all his own...every note sounds and is entirely Stefon Harris. 91. Untitled Document
lara downes, of the UC Davis Department of Music, used her remarkable talents aspianist and raconteuse to bring to life the Romantic composer Robert Schumann
http://davisclassicalreview.com/LaraDownes.htm
Lara Downes Opening Concert October 15 2004 As Ms. Downes told the audience, Schumann was an imaginative writer as well as a composer. His beloved Clara Wieck was the pianist for whom he wrote his most enchanting work. During her program, Ms. Downes seemed so absorbed by the Schumanns that she could have been Robert speaking with sensitivity about himself, his beloved and his music, and then Clara interpreting his work at the piano. Ms. Downes used words and music, no visuals, for this concert. The simplicity of her plan and the artistry of her performance avoided any hint of pedagogy. As she embraced her subject, words and music melted into each other.
With several sections of Carnival op. 9, Ms. Downes captured the musical pictures Schumann created in his homages to Schubert, Mendelssohn, Chopin and Beethoven. Her playing ranged in spirit from graceful and enchanting to determined and contentious, and, as she had implicitly promised in her introductory remarks, she did indeed convey the particular style or phrase in the works of those earlier composers that had inspired Schumann.

For those of us who did not lose someone, what has become seemingly insurmountable are the waves of questions pounding our minds. Questions about how in the same day, the good and bad of human nature were shown in such extreme ways; about finding truth among such vastly opposing perceptions of it; doubts about humankindÕs repeated mistakes, and about the meaning of life. The compositional ideas of

Our regular offerings include extended summer institutes, year-round workshops on particular topics in history, and an annual weekend book retreat. The project also supports focused working groups of teachers and linguists to develop resources and expertise in discipline-specific literacy development. A calendar of events is available on our web site: http://historyproject.ucdavis.edu In a "teachers teaching teachers" format, expert teachers share the knowledge and skills they have developed in a collegial atmosphere with regional colleagues and UC faculty. The Marchand Room, a teaching resources library located on campus, contains books, slides, lessons and other teaching materials for loan. We invite teachers to make the room "your office on campus." The Marchand Collection of teaching materials and images in U.S. history is available for download from our web site Funding: Combined annual funding for the project is provided by the California History-Social Science Project and three Teaching American History grants, in partnership with Grant Joint Union School District, Sacramento City Unified School District and San Juan Unified School District.
