Elton John in sunglasses Sir Elton Hercules John CBE (born March 25 ) is a British rock music singer songwriter , and pianist , who is one of the most successful solo artists in music history. Biographical Sketch
David Wendell Guion was born in Ballinger, Texas, on 15 December 1892 to John I. and Armour Fentress Guion. His earliest musical influences included the cowboy culture of his rancher father and the songs of his family's African-American household servants. Piano studies took Guion to Vienna, Austria, in 1912 to study with Leopold Godowski at the Royal Conservatory of Music, but he was forced to return to Texas in 1914 by the onset of World War I. Guion supported himself by teaching and composing and moved to New York in 1929. There an association with publishers G. Schirmer, Inc. brought new popularity for his arrangements of cowboy songs and spirituals. His biggest hit, "Home on the Range," emerged from his New York production Prairie Echoes.

Music Programmes Concert Hour : The hour was between noon and 1pm, on weekdays on the Home Service from March 1946 to December 1964, when music was commonplace on the Home Service - as opposed to the much rarer event which it is today. Grand Hotel : started in 1925 and was, to quote the Radio Times of the era, ' Music of the Palm Court Orchestra' . It featured Jack Byfield, Max Jaffa and a different singer each week. Vanessa Lee was a favourite of the programme, but many other operatic sopranos were also invited to appear. The series ran for a number of years and was generally broadcast live, usually from the Concert Hall at Broadcasting House but occasionally on location. It lapsed for a couple of years before returning for its final series in 1951 when it was pre-recorded and introduced by Tom Jenkins with the Palm Court Orchestra and guest baritone Alfred Swain. The programme's signature tune was Strauss's 'Roses from the South'. Introduction Make Way for Music : A slice of daytime entertainment from the Light Programme with singer Sheila Buxton accompanied by the Northern Dance Orchestra conducted by Alan Ainsworth. Memories for You : requested tunes played in strict tempo by Victor Sylvester's Ballroom Orchestra in a series heard on both Light and Home services.

Biography for
Ron Goodwin
Birth name
Ronald Alfred Goodwin
Mini biography
Ron Goodwin was born on 17th February 1925 in Plymouth. He was the son of a London policeman who was detached to the harbour-town. His mother felt that piano lessons would be a good pastime, so in his fifth year, the little Ron was hoisted onto a piano-stool and his education on this instrument began. Ron himself was at that time not really convinced about that parental ambition.
In 1934 his father's detachment ended and the family moved back to London. Ron went for his elementary education to the Willesden County Grammar school, situated in the North-West of London. In the school an orchestra was set-up and Ron got slowly attracted by music. It fascinated him, that all these young people were playing different instruments but that the result was very harmonious.
He started as a copyist for the music publisher Campbell Connelly. There he got the opportunity to work with and learn from Harry G. Stafford. This was an elderly thoroughly experienced arranger, who had arranged the music of

THE JAMES DEAN STORY

Brackett remembers Dean made quite a stir striding through the lobby of the expensive hotel dressed in blue jeans, and carrying his bullfighter's cape slung over his shoulder. After about a week in the Windy City, Dean visited the Reverend DeWeerd for a few days at his new home in Indianapolis and paid a visit to the farm to see his aunt and uncle. Then he proceeded on his journey. In New York, Dean took a room at the Iroquois Hotel on West 44th Street, several blocks from Times Square. It was October 195 1. "New York frightened and overwhelmed me," Dean said afterward. "For the first few weeks I barely strayed from my hotel. I would see three movies a day to ease the loneliness I felt." Gradually, as his fears subsided, he began to explore the city around him.

All the obituaries gave the full details of his musical history, from being self-taught on the clarinet to achieving deserved acclaim as one of the foremost saxophone players of his day, and little can be added to the flow of tributes, other than complete agreement. Dick Morrissey`s funeral was held on 13 November in St Thomas`s Catholic church in Deal, attended by his very caring family, friends and fellow musicians, including Tony Archer, Phil Bates, Lennie Best, Johnny Burch, Mike Carr, Mick Durrell, Chris Fletcher, Allan Ganley, Dave Green, Jim Hall, Chris Howes, Dave Lewis, Len Skeat, Terry Smith, Hamish Stuart, Neal Wilkinson and Bobby Worth, plus David Redfern and Jack Massarik.

The Debussy Quartet has built a reputation graced with international acclaim through their many recordings and live performances. From the Salle Moliere in Lyon, France to the Kaufman Concert Hall at the 92nd Street Y in New York City, the quartet has enlivened the chamber music world with performances of distinction: lush with detail and atmosphere, stylish, technically exciting, and musically thoughtful.
Based in Lyon, France, and honored as Winners of the Evian International String Quartet Competition, the quartet perform some 80 concerts a year in Europe, Asia, and North America. Their recent U.S. tours have included concerts in Washington, DC, New York, San Diego, St. Louis, Austin, Detroit, Palm Beach and many other communities from coast to coast. They have built a special connection to the audiences at the Round Top Festival in Round Top, Texas, where they have continued their collaboration with distinguished American pianist James Dick.
The group's expansive repertoire is enhanced by their special commitment to bring distinguished works of French composers to the stage and the recording studio. Through their particular acclaim for their interpretations of the Debussy and Ravel quartet, they have introduced audiences to other French works such as those of Lalo, Lekeu, and the late romantic composer Ermend Bonnal. Currently touring the quartets of Shostakovitch, all of which they have recorded for the Arion label, they also offer works of Janacek, Haydn, Mozart, Beethoven, Brahms, and more. Noted for their collaborative performances both with James Dick and with French pianist Jean-Efflam Bavouzet, the artists together offer the major piano quintet repertoire on tour as well.

Dick Wellstood Hanging with Dick Wellstood - by Grant Simpson Dick Wellstood was a true original and a personal (pianistic) hero of mine. I met Dick in 1984 through sheer audacity - a kid in my early 20's. I had a house gig at the Chez Michelle Restaurant in Nanaimo, British Columbia, Canada. It was my house gig for just over three years. One of the perks that was offered to me was the opportunity to help produce "Jazz Weekends" which the club owner said I could help organize with players of my choice. I first heard Dick a few years before when I was in my teens. I was an instant fan and follower. So after I settled into my new gig, I picked up the phone and in turn phoned my three main piano hero's: Dave McKenna, Dick Wellstood and Ralph Sutton. It was one of the great honours of my life to meet and hang out with these great men. All three of these men treated me so kindly and I learned so much from them. I have nothing but great fond memories for each one of them, but with Dick, there was an instant connection. Hanging with Wellstood is one of my fondest memories - period. Over the course of six days, we spent a lot of time together. We went for lunch and dinner every day. He came to hear me play every evening from Monday to Thursday (Dick played Friday and Saturday night). He critiqued my playing every night, gave me exercises and good solid advice. One of my favourite memories of this is the first night he heard me play. After I had finished my first set, he said. "Nice, nice. Yeah.....you sound a lot like McKenna at times." I asked him if he had any suggestions. He said, "Yeah, you should listen to me more". (He was right, and I have!)
