Elton John's Lady Samantha is nice thought it's much as we've heard before. Semi-Elizabethan feel but lyrically interesting." New Musical Express: "Co-written by Elton , this is typically professional and musicianly - Elton has written several big numbers for others. Lyrics are sensible and worthwhile - not part of the underground-type scene. A promising talent." Name at birth: Reginald Kenneth Dwight A prolific songwriter and a flamboyant performer, Elton John had 30 different hits on the top 40 charts between 1970 and 1982. His theatrical stage appearances, with John changing into a succession of elaborate costumes and outlandish spectacles, helped make him a pop megastar. His hit tunes included "Goodbye, Yellow Brick Road," "Your Song," "Bennie and the Jets," and "Rocket Man." All were written with his longtime lyricist, Bernie Taupin. Although John lost a bit of his shine during the '80s, he re-emerged as a force in the 1990s, touring and recording and cementing his spot among the pop music aristocracy. He performed his song "Candle in the Wind" at the funeral of Princess Diana in 1997, and the song went on to become an international best-seller. John (like

Born 25th. March, 1947, in Pinner, Middlesex, England.
His original name was Reginald Kenneth Dwight. His father was a squadron leader in the RAF, and he also played trumpet with Bob Miller and the Millermen. He left the family when Reg Dwight was a teenager. Reg Dwight started playing the piano at the age of four. He studied at the Royal Academy of Music. In 1961, at the age of 14, he joined the local rhythm and blues band Bluesology. He turned professional in 1965 when the group toured the USA backing soul artists. Their first single was Come Back Baby written by Reg Dwight. The group included Elton Dean on saxaphone and Caleb Quaye on lead guitar. Long John Baldry joined the group in 1966. Reg Dwight became disatisfied with the type of work he was doing and began discussing a music publishing contract with Dick James Music. In 1967 he met Bernie Taupin, an unknown writer from Lincolnshire. They realised that they had similar musical tastes and produced, Scarecrow , their first composition together.

      Biography
In 1968 John and Taupin were signed by Dick James, formerly of Northern Songs, to be staff writers for his new company DJM Records at a salary of ú10 per week. The songs were slow to take off, although Roger Cook released their "Skyline Pigeon" and Lulu sang "I've Been Loving You Too Long" as a potential entry for the Eurovision Song Contest. One hopes that John was not too depressed when he found that "Boom-Bang-A-Bang" was the song chosen in its place. While the critics liked his own single releases, none were selling. Only "Lady Samantha" came near to breaking the chart, which is all the more perplexing as it was an excellent, commercial-sounding record. In June 1969 Empty Sky was released, and John was still ignored, although the reviews were reasonably favourable. During the next few months he played on sessions with the Hollies (notably the piano on "He Ain't Heavy, He's My Brother") and made budget recordings for cover versions released in supermarkets.
Finally, his agonizingly long wait for recognition came the following year when Gus Dudgeon produced the outstanding Elton John. Among the tracks were "Border Song" and the classic "Your Song". The latter provided Elton John's first UK hit, reaching number 2, and announced the emergence of a major talent. The momentum was maintained with Tumbleweed Connection but the following soundtrack, Friends and the live 17-11-70 were major disappointments to his fans. These were minor setbacks, as over the next few years Elton John became a superstar. His concerts in America were legendary as he donned ridiculous outfits and outrageous spectacles. At one stage between 1972 and 1975 he had seven consecutive number 1 albums, variously spawning memorable hits including "Rocket Man", "Daniel", "Saturday Night's Alright For Fighting", "Goodbye Yellow Brick Road", "Candle In The Wind" and the powerful would-be suicide note, "Someone Saved My Life Tonight".

    Elton John
Elton John is among the most successful acts of the rock era. In terms of popularity, he is in a class with Elvis Presley and the Beatles. Moreover, his longevity as an active recording artist surpasses that of either of them. As of 1992, he broke Presley's old record for the most consecutive years of Top 40 hits on Billboard's singles chart, having been a continual presence in every year since the late 1970 entry of "Your Song." No one can boast a longer uninterrupted ride at the top. The son of a former Royal Air Force trumpeter, Elton John was born Reginald Kenneth Dwight on March 25th, 1947, in Pinner, a suburb of London. Dwight began playing piano at the age of four, and when he was 11, he won a scholarship to the Royal Academy of Music. Young Reg grew up with a repressive father who wanted him to be a banker, and though John's one love was music, his father banned all rock and roll from the house. His mother took pity on him and smuggled in such contraband as Little Richard and Jerry Lee Lewis. Dwight became frustrated with Baldry's control of the band and began searching for other groups to join. He was passed over at lead vocalist auditions for both King Crimson and Gentle Giant, before responding to an advertisement by Liberty Records. Though he failed his Liberty audition, he was given a stack of lyrics that Bernie Taupin, who had also replied to the ad, had left with the label. Dwight wrote music for Taupin's lyrics and began corresponding with him through mail. By the time the two met six months later, Dwight had changed his name to Elton John, taking his first name from Bluesology saxophonist Elton Dean and his last from John Baldry.

For those who may not be on top of their international piano competition game, here is a little background.
Cliburn decided to start his own international competition in 1962. The second was held in 1966 and the third in 1969. Since then, the competition has been conducted every four years, sort of like the Olympics of Pianoing.
Of the 270 applications, 147 from around the world were invited to audition. Thirty-five of those were selected as finalists. The 19 women and 16 men are from 13 countries. Eight are from China, six from Russia and five from the United States. Four are from Italy, three from Ukraine and two from South Korea. Australia, Canada, Germany, Israel, Lithuania, United Kingdom and Venezuela have one each.

"Festival Hill is difficult to describe," explains UT professor of percussion Thomas Burritt. "It's as unusual a place as anyone will find. Unusual, in this instance, is a good thing. Festival Hill represents the value of the arts. It's a place where the artistic personality can feel revitalized. I think artists feel alive there because the scenery, the architecture, and, most importantly, the people show an undying love for the arts. If you're a musician, you'd want all of society to mirror these attributes." Against all odds, this classical music haven is deep in the heart of Texas. A landmark on 200 acres of hilly, tree-covered countryside in the picture-perfect town of Round Top, population 77, this refuge is officially known as the International-Festival Institute at Round Top. Festival Hill for short, this place is the vision of former concert pianist James Dick, who, with his dedicated team, built, planted, and developed the school, venue, and grounds piece by piece starting in 1971. To see a concert at Festival Hill is to become a classical music fan. An hour and a half east of Austin, this place is Austin's as much as anyone's. Not to own, but to support, visit, and appreciate. Austin is the closest big city, home to several of the Institute's musician faculty, many of its students, and some of the nonprofit organization's biggest donors.
