SOME OUTLAWS AND OTHERS I HAVE KNOWN by: Kerry Ross Boren There are many rewards in being a writer and historian which transcends the nominal financial success, or the need to earn a living. A true writer writes not for profit, but as an extension of himself-or herself: an inexplicable drive to create, extend, preserve, and to illuminate that which he, or she, experiences or observes. The old adage here applies: "A writer is not what I am-it is who I am." As a published writer since the age of twelve, I am the sum-total of all my experiences, all that I have observed, and a reflection of all those people I have encountered along the way, both good and bad. I have had the good fortune, as a writer, to have met and associated with some of the most interesting and amazing characters who ever graced the stage of life. I have interviewed, worked with, corresponded with, and considered as friends some special people I should never have otherwise been privileged to know. I have laughed with them, cried with them, loved and lied with them, and have had my life enriched by the experience. In the vignettes which follow, I would like to share a few of these characters with you. Some of the characters will be familiar to you; some will not. Some of them are likable; a few of them are scoundrels; some other are likable scoundrels. All of them were my friends, whether they knew it or not.

Closing Night in New York City by Cyndi Ridge (Written for the December 1996 Davis Gaines Information Network newsletter, which has been replaced by this website. Subsequently, Andrew Lloyd Webber brought it back to Los Angeles for a limited run at the Pantages Theatre in 1998 and asked Davis to reprise the role, which he did.) . What a journey. How privileged I feel to have been there. Davis took the stage for that final performance and his command of that stage and character was solid and gripping. We followed him one last time from his appearance in the mirror, through his seductive rendition of "The Music of the Night", to the powerfully provocative "Point of No Return", until he let Christine go for the last time, clutching the wedding veil and singing out into the auditorium, "It's over now, the music of the night." We knew the impact of his portrayal of Erik was not something we'd see again for a very long time, if ever. I cried. A lot! And cheered even more. As he spoke to the audience, sharing his thoughts on the show, thanking the cast and the fans for his Phantom experience, he joked around and also touched on what a special 5 1/2 years it had been for him. And then, saying, "There is something I've always wanted to do," with one sweeping motion he tore most of the latex scars off his face and the wigs off his head - revealing an unadorned Davis. The audience went wild! Everyone knows there is a man behind that mask and make-up, but to have Davis peel those layers away in a second, and let everyone share with him, the actor and not just Erik the character, that glorious final bow, was a moment no one in the Majestic Theatre will soon forget!

This is pretty much the exchange that takes place over the course of the film: Rachel: Bruce its not about who you are but what you do with yourself that really matters. This really makes no sense. Oh well. This movie will make money, but its not going to have the cultural impact longetivity or financial success of the Burton films. Why? Well its just not as entertaining. You go see a movie called Batman to be entertained, not challenged. its very possible to do both, but I think its pretty impossible to really say anything meaningful in a Hollywood superhero film. The film does manage a nice message about fear but it lacks any really fun sequences where the audience is drawn in and held spellbound. I could have done without the "I won't kill you, but I don't have to save you" line which was lame, didn't make sense, and, er....derailed the scene. But still, amazing stuff. My problem, more glaring in the second half, is that it seemed Nolan had a great vision, but then flinched just before completing it. If you're going for the realistic, plausible angle, then don't have a corny microwave machine that flash-boils all the drugged water in the city. If you're going for a serious film, leave out the "I gotta get me one of those" type of lines. I mean, you're
