NEW BLUES FOR PIANO - A PROJECT IN PROGRESS BY MARCEL WORMS Marcel Worms is a Dutch pianist, classically trained but also with a strong interest in jazz. In 1996 year he asked nine well-known Dutch composers to write him a Blues. He was curious to know what the Blues, one of the roots of jazz music and still in important point of departure and point of reference for many jazzmusicians, meant for the contemporary composer either with a classical background or classically educated. He premiered these Blues in January 1997 in Amsterdam (as well as a Blues written for him by Michael Finnissy) in the BIMHUIS, Amsterdams foremost jazzstage. At the end of 1997 again 12 new Dutch and foreign Blues were ready and were premiered at the Icebreaker, Centre for Contemporary Music in Amsterdam and the third series had its first performance again at the BIMHUIS in November 1998. In 2000 new series of Blues have been premiered at the 'Beurs van Berlage' in Amsterdam and at the BIMHUIS again. Since then many other premieres took place.
Marcel Worms has laid contacts with composers in the countries where he will give or have allready given recitals recently. This has resulted in about 140 new compositions until now originating from over 35 different countries e.g. many European countries, Argentina, Brazil, China, Malaysia, Russia, Singapore, South-Africa, South-America, the Ukraine and the USA. The repertory is still growing.

He has played with La Bande à Magoo, l’Orkestre des Pas Perdus, Ensemble Daniel Lessard, Raoul, Vic Vogel Big Band and has performed at: Festival International de Jazz de Montréal, Guelph Jazz Festival (Ontario), Guimaraes Jazz Festival (Portugal) and AMG Edge Fest, Ann Arbor (USA). Erik Hove (sax alto)… studied saxophone at McGill University with Remi Bolduc and with Blue Note recording artist Greg Osby, in New York. He formed the turntable-jazz group Soundclash, which has played extensively in New York and Montreal and also played with the jazz-fusion group Burdock with his former teacher Rémi Bolduc. Now based in Montreal, he heads a trio and plays with many local artists: Thom Gossage, Miles Perkins, Ensemble Jazz Urbain de Montréal and the pop group Stars. L'OFF FESTIVAL de JAZZ de MONTRÉAL - 25 JUNE 2005 '' L'Off was off to a good start with two killer sets on June 25. At O Patro Vys, Ensemble Jazz Urbain de Montreal led by bass player Alex Bellegarde worked their Afro-Cuban pulse with great energy and a loose, good-natured, improvisatory feel. A dense ground of rhythm from Bellegarde, drummer Isaiah Ceccarelli, percussionist Alain Mercure, and outstanding Conga player Orlando Lavielle gave the soloists solid support for their tuneful flights of fancy.'' Featuring: Avishai E. Cohen (tp), Yonatan Avishai (p, fl), Omer Avital (b), Daniel Freedman (d)
This magnificent recording is the fruit of a unique grouping of some of the world's most promising jazz talent. Here we have six pieces recorded earlier this year, while on tour in Spain, by trumpet player Avishai E. Cohen (who will be shortly releasing his own Fresh Sound New Talent recording as leader), young pianist Yonatan Avishai, flamboyant bass player Omer Avital (also a member of the OAM Trio, with drummer Marc Miralta and pianist Aaron Goldberg, with two Fresh Sound new Talent CDs under their belts) and New York drummer Daniel Freedman. "The music they play with their own groups could never leave you indifferent, as what predominate in their music are originality, and above all, a very characteristic display of expression." - from the liner notes by producer Jordi Pujol.

Grupo Vocal Desandann
Breaks
Miami's Cultural Blockade

by Kim Ives
The beloved Cuban-Haitian vocal group Desandann finally toured Miami earlier this month, thanks to the efforts of a feisty coalition of arts activists who took Miami officials to court and overturned a regulation effectively banning Cuban groups. Since the early days of the Cuban Revolution in 1959, Miami has been the seat of Cuban counter-revolution. The "gusanos" (worms), as the counter-revolutionaries are called in Cuba, have waged a terror campaign against many Cuban artists who have performed, or attempted to perform, in Miami. For example, in 1996, intimidating mobs attacked concert-goers entering a recital by renowned Cuban pianist Gonzalo Rubalcaba. A few months earlier, musician Chucho Valdez had to cancel a concert due to bomb threats. In 1998, terrorists fire-bombed a club where Manolin "Medico de la Salsa" was scheduled to play. Last fall, 5000 "gusanos" rioted, throwing rocks and bottles, when the Cuban musical group Los Vanvan performed. So frenzied were the Cuban counter-revolutionaries that in 1996 they had Miami-Dade County enact an ordinance to deny county funding to any organization doing business with Cubans, with Cuban businesses, or even with people doing business with Cubans or Cuban businesses.

Paul Laverty takes the applause at Cannes
Roman Polanski's The Pianist has won the prestigious Palme d'Or award at the Cannes Film Festival. The British had one winner, Paul Laverty for his screenplay in Ken Loach's film Sweet Sixteen, but lost out in the film and acting categories. The Pianist beat 21 other films vying for the Palme d'Or, including movies by Mike Leigh, Michael Winterbottom and Loach. Polanski took the top prize
Polanski's film is about the Holocaust and stars Adrien Brody as a brilliant Polish pianist who escapes the Warsaw ghetto. It was interpreted as a very personal film by Polanski, 68, himself a Jew who survived the Krakow ghetto but lost his mother at a Nazi camp. "I am honored and touched to receive this prestigious prize for a film that represents Poland," Polanski told the closing ceremony in Cannes. The Grand Prix, which usually rewards originality and research, went to The Man Without a Past by Finnish director Aki Kaurismaki, which is about an amnesia victim in the slums of Helsinki.

Cannes - 2002 "What are your favorite films shown in the Cannes Competition?" Nothing quite yanked the chain of my European critic friends at the 2002 Festival like my stars-and-stripes, xenophobic, post-Sept.11 answer: "The American movies rock!" It was true, Eurodudes. Our USA went three for three where it counted: up the red carpet at the Palais in the Official Competition. Alexander Payne (Citizen Ruth, Election) triumphed with his third straight clever, acerbic comedy, the Jack Nicholson-starring About Schmidt, and Paul Thomas Anderson (Boogie Nights, Magnolia) used Adam Sandler brilliantly in his loopy farce, Punch-Drunk Love. Michael Moore's Bowling for Columbine, the first documentary selected for Competition since Louis Malle's Le Monde du Silence in the 1950s, was, les mains-down, the most popular film among Cannes' first-nighters. The gown-and-tuxedo gathered rewarded Moore's agit-prop movie essay about the violence-soaked USA with a ten-minute standing ovation. Finally, Woody Allen left his beloved New York for an Opening Night screening (out of Competition) of Hollywood Ending, which had already played theatres back home to tepid reviews and terrible box office. The French weren't crazy about the movie either, but Allen tamed skeptics with his calculatedly diplomatic words at a press conference. "The French people have been so supportive of my films and so affectionate to me, that I thought I'd show some gesture of repricocity and gratitude," Allen explained of his unexpected live appearance on the Cote d'Azure. "When I made Hollywood Ending, I looked at it and thought that the Cannes audience would get a particular enjoyment out of it."

DIXIE CHICKS
Wide Open Spaces (Monument) Monument Records, a Nashville label that has been out of business for 10 years, is coming back to life under the power of Sony Nashville, and it's raising its flag on the Dixie Chicks' Wide Open Spaces . It's a perfect match, really; this Dallas-based trio is Wilson Phillips, only all three of the "chicks" here are gorgeous and the famous parent hiding his face in embarrassment is Lloyd Maines (father of lead singer Natalie Maines). As such, the music is bland, the lyrics recount predictable scripts that have been written into pop songs for as long as they've existed, and about the only way to tell this is supposed to be country as opposed to pop are the strings - and Papa Maines on steel guitar. It's true that, in its recycling, the kind of generic pop drivel of songs like "Once You've Loved Somebody" or "Loving Arms" will always remain vital, but it's also true that each carrier of this torch is but a paper container, as expendable as the next.

GANGS OF NEW YORK
New York City is undoubtedly the most famous modern city in the world and is the setting of countless films. We often see high-rise buildings, endure non-stop traffic and encounter diverse people. However, in Gangs of New York , we go beyond the structure, motions and individuals that define the resilient city and experience the extraordinary events that forged it. Indeed, America was born in the streets.
STORY
Gangs of New York rises out of the conflicts between the Anglo-Saxon natives of William Cutting ( Daniel Day-Lewis ) and the Irish immigrants led by ‘Priest’ Vallon, laying claim to the Five Points of New York. Vallon is killed by Cutting in the defining battle, but his son Amsterdam ( Leonardo DiCaprio ) returns years later to take revenge. The story is set within a city plagued by crime, ruled by corrupt politicians and dominated by bloody gang warfare amidst the anti-conscription riots of 1863.
