Thursday August 30 FRANK EMILIO FLYNN, 80 : Blind pianist Frank Emilio Flynn has died in his home town of Havana. With the Symphonic Orchestra of Havana, he performed music of Bach, Mozart, and Beethoven which had been transcribed into Braille. He was best known, however, as a pioneer of Latin jazz. Nando Times (AP) 08/29/01 Tuesday August 28 BASICALLY BARENBOIM: Conductor/pianist Daniel Barenboim has had a controversial year. Prodigiously busy musically, he's also been embroiled in spats from Berlin to Israel. Though critics increasingly pick holes in his musical interpretations, "he remains one of the most discussed musicians of our age — not least because, among his Protean gifts, is a talent for stirring up controversy that borders on genius. That is evident from the battles he has fought over the past few months." The Times (UK) 08/28/01 SCHNABEL, 92:

It now has become a joyful activity in itself where I try to make midi files suitable for web page publishing. So please don't be the hundredth person to send me Amanda Huginkiss, since that is not a real last name. And I now finally have enough "Dick" names and other bawdy names. Please, no more! Of course it was very hard to watch, but it blew me away. Polanski is still at the top of his game, and there are no words to describe Adrien Brody in this film. The last half an hour of the movie was particularly poignant, and Brody's performance was incredibly nuanced and restrained. (BTW, Brody bears an uncanny resemblance to a guy I dated in college, which was eerie. Hi Kawthar!) Anyway, I had been rooting for Daniel Day-Lewis to win the Oscar (tm) but now I'm hoping Brody will get it. Go see The Pianist! Posted by moorishgirl at March 01, 2003 09:06 AM

CHICAGO
CHICAGO (A-3, PG-13): Musicals don't come much more comically glitzy or wittily cynical than Chicago (born on stage in 1975). This energetic movie spoofs the city's infamous Prohibition-era morals with a lively splash of ragtime jazz songs, plus dazzling individual and chorus dancing. The original creative talents included legendary choreographer Bob Fosse, songsmiths John Kander and Fred Ebb ( Cabaret ), and performers Gwen Verdon and Chita Rivera. The best numbers age beautifully: "All That Jazz," "Mr. Cellophane," "Razzle-Dazzle" and the rousing "Nowadays." First-time feature director Rob Marshall kept much of the original dialogue and style but pushed everything to another level with impressive cinematics—primarily Martin Walsh's editing. Nominated for 13 Academy Awards, the film has already won Golden Globes for best picture, musical or comedy, as well as Richard Gere and Renée Zellweger for their acclaimed performances. Catherine Zeta-Jones won a BAFTA Award and is nominated for an Oscar. The based-loosely-on-fact plot material is scandalous, derived from the political corruption of the time and the public's media-driven fascination with sensational crimes.

Basya Schechter
Blending a psychedelic sensibility and a pan-Mediterranean sensuality, Basya Schechter leads her band, Pharaoh's Daughter, through swirling Hasidic chants, Mizrachi and Sephardi folk-rock, and spiritual stylings filtered through percussion, flute, strings and electronica. Her sound has been cultivated by her Hasidic music background and a series of trips to the Middle East, Africa, Israel, Egypt, Central Africa, Turkey, Kurdistan and Greece. She began retuning her guitar to sound like a cross between an Arabic oud and a Turkish saz, with harmonic minor melodies, and odd time signatures. With the many amazing musicians, named below and others as well she has recorded four albums , three with Pharaoh's Daughter and one instrumental exploration with Persian santur player, Alan Kushan. PD also appears on three Tzadik label compilations: Voices in the Wilderness , the 10 year of anniversary of Zorn's Masada compositions; a collection of Sasha Argov music; and, a Brazilian Jewish composer from earlier in the 20th century

Their gifts are so precious, not only in the music they make, but in the love they share with all who surround them. I have learned an immense amount from all of them, and am grateful to them all. I am trying to get bio information on all of them, but you know musicians....Einstein's ideas on time are definitely in play.
