'Glenn Gould Live'*
On May 19 in Raleigh, North Carolina, Zenph Studios will present the Canadian pianist Glenn Gould , who died in 1982, playing Bach's "Goldberg Variations." "The company has created software that can reproduce every note from scratchy, decades–old recordings, exactly as they were originally made — replicating the original pedal, damper and key positions on an actual, albeit automated, piano," wrote Guy Gugliotta in yesterday's Washington Post. The technology was described by Mick Hamer last week in the April 22 New Scientist; that article appears below.
Ivory Encore for Dead Piano Greats Next month music lovers in Raleigh, North Carolina, will be able to hear two of the greatest pianists of the 20th century in concert. Both the pianists, however, are long dead. Zenph Studios, a software company based in Raleigh, has found a way to take a music recording and convert it into a live concert played on real instruments. The concert will be a completely faithful rendition of the original pianists' work.

Her conscious and most demanding vocation led this noble pianist to work, fromvery young years, alfred cortot was an intimate friend of Fauré s music.

Vals and Pavana are the two which lie closest to the genre of salon music, a term sometimes used to suggest a certain decadent flavour, but here the composer gives the pieces an intimately elegant character. The Preludis and Mazurcas

classical-romantic guitar into the modern instrument. Arcas'work is, however, strongly rooted in the fertile Spanish guitar tradition; in his Bolero , for example, we find echoes which seem to hark back to the seguidillas boleras of the end of the eighteenth century, some excellent examples of which can be found in Sors' work. The is like a promenade between the variety of different rhythmic palettes that can feature in this dance, a blend of Caribbean and Mediterranean accents.
DIONISIO AGUADO (1784-1849)
Les deux amis to his younger colleague. The Fandango Variado shows strong links with the similarly named movement in Bocherini's famous Guitar Quintet (or indeed "Fandango quintet" as it is often called). Presumably both "Fandangos" have the same source of inspiration: "Padre Basilio" who meet Boccherini and Aguado in Madrid.

Some improvisations by this well-known Spanish composer were privately recorded on cylinders around 1903 and have been issued on VAI 1001 (“The Catalan Piano Tradition”). EUGEN d’ALBERT (1864-1932)
Only a sampling of this Liszt pupil's recorded output is available on CD. SYMPOSIUM 1146 is entirely devoted to d'Albert, with transfers that are noisier than they need to be, whereas a few selected recordings can be found on PEARL 9972 (Pupils of Liszt) and on IPAM 1206 ("A Multitude of Pianists"). A much-needed complete edition of d'Albert's recordings is likely to appear in 2006. GÉZA ANDA (1921-1976)
This notable Hungarian virtuoso, a pupil of Dohnányi, made numerous LP discs for British Columbia (now on Testament CDs) and for DG. His earliest recordings, however, were a series of Polydor 78s issued during World War II. Some but not all of them (with music of Franck, Schumann, Chopin, and Paganini-Liszt-Busoni), have recently appeared in a 5-CD compilation of Anda performances on DG (475289). CONRAD ANSORGE (1862-1930)
This Liszt pupil was especially known for his Beethoven interpretations, but very little by him is available on CD. Two recordings can be found in Pearl's "Pupils of Liszt" set (PEARL 9972).

he following are sketches of the great pianists. By and large, they are pianists of the "Golden Age" of pianism. In all honesty, I spent more time studying about these pianists and listening to their recordings than I should have...but what great memories! I did these sketches when I was in High School. My method was to listen to the recordings of whichever artist I as sketching, and by so doing get a clue into their general aura. That is to say, when I listen to Friedman play, I see fire and orange...hence, Friedman is drawn in orange. Rachmaninoff could hardly be any color but brown, Godowski blue, and so on. ALFRED CORTOT Alfred Cortot was born in Switzerland, but was considered the leading French pianist (he founded two schools of music there). Even his haircut is French-looking.
