The Great Lakes Chamber Music Festival opens its 11th annual season at the Seligman Arts Center in Beverly Hills at 8 p.m. Saturday. The opening night program offers music by three Russians - Stravinsky, Glazunov and Rachmaninoff - and finishes up with French composer Ernest Chausson's Concerto for Piano, Violin and String Quartet. Performing at the opening concert are pianist James Tocco, the Festival's artistic director; Detroit-born pianist Ruth Laredo, pianist Ursula Oppens, violinist Ida Kavafian, baritone Chris Trakas and the St. Petersburg Quartet. Highlights of the remaining concerts of the Festival's first week: a recital by Richard and John Contiguglia, the identical twin-brother piano duo, at St. Hugo's Chapel at 7 p.m. Sunday that includes Percy Grainger's Fantasy on Gershwin's "Porgy and Bess" and Liszt's transcription for two pianos of the final two movements of Beethoven's Ninth Symphony a program that features Bartok's Sonata for Two Pianos and Percussion and Brahms' 2nd String Quintet at Kirk in the Hills at 8 p.m. Tuesday and Wednesday.

Piano Four Hands Schubertiad at Elon University by William Thomas Walker It was heartening to see a packed house in Elon University's Whitley Auditorium on April 1 for a choice and rare evening of some of Franz Schubert's finest works for piano four hands. The concert was presented under the aegis of The Adams Foundation of Santa Barbara, California, which is establishing piano recitals in select communities throughout America. In collaboration with Elon University and the Burlington Times-News , the Foundation hopes to make The Adams Foundation Piano Recital Series at Whitley Auditorium a permanent feature of the area's cultural life, and since it is an easy drive from both the Triad and the Triangle, their concerts should be red lettered on every music lover's calendar. Masterful interpretations were given by the acclaimed duo piano team of Richard and John Contiguglia. The identical twins graduated "summa cum laude" from Yale and with honors from the Yale College of Music. They studied for four years in London with their mentor, Dame Myra Hess, who exhorted them to promote the Schubert piano duet repertory. The brothers are most often heard playing two pianos (as at the Greensboro Symphony's Poulenc concert, reviewed by CVNC last fall). Their desire to play the glorious restored 1923D Steinway enthroned in Whitley led them to create a program surveying Schubert's most significant works for piano four hands. Piano duets played by ad hoc or intermittent teams can be boring - or worse, murky - affairs. Too often those I have heard have left me with the impression that most of the pleasure must have been found solely in playing them. In contrast, the Contiguglia brothers have been playing together as a duo since they were five years old. That constant ensemble effort was most telling. They articulated musical lines with extraordinary clarity, and their great care with phrasing was a masterclass in musicianship and style. Technical details and mere virtuosity were not ends in themselves but were subordinated to realizing the composer's intent.

As he watched the performer strike the keys with perfect rhythm, and listened to the powerful music envelop the lake front pavilion, the beating of his heart grew steadier, and the chills up his spine grew stronger. "I was feeling inspiration," explained Contiguglia. As a teenager, Auburn was the place where Contiguglia would become familiar with that feeling. "Oh, Auburn was wonderful then," said Contiguglia, now in his late 60s and living in New York City. "We would take class trips up to Emerson Park every year to hear piano recitals. It was routine, but it was a different time then, our society wasn't overflowing with pop-culture, people had more of an exposure and appreciation for classical music," he said. Over time, the piano recitals stopped at Emerson Park in Auburn, and like so many other smaller communities throughout the country, so did the exposure to classical piano music.

Twin pianos are visual as well as aural By TOM DILLON Times-News They belong to different health clubs in New York City and go their own ways after practice. Richard is a serious reader and student of Shakespeare. John tends an herb and flower garden on the northern fork of Long Island and enjoys cooking. But they do live in the same soundproof apartment building in the city (Richard on the sixth floor, John on the fourth), making it easy to get together to practice. And they do share, as well as genetic makeup, quite serious views on the state of classical music in America. The Contiguglias are natives of Auburn, N.Y., where they performed on the same program with Grainger when they were only 12 years old, leading to a lifelong friendship with the older man. Both graduated from Yale University with twin summa cum laude averages of 91. (Richard studied English and philosophy, and John studied chemistry.) At the time, playing together was only for fun. It turned into a career with they studied with Dame Myra Hess in London. Since then, they have performed all over the world, recording for the Connoisseur Society and Philips of Japan and becoming famous for their renditions of work by Liszt and Bela Bartok. Home Page
