Auburn's twin pianists plan a homecoming rhapsody
By Lorraine Smorol
Twins rule the family of Auburn's identical pianists. Not only are classical keyboardists Richard and John Contiguglia, age 61, identical twins, so are their older brothers, Louis and Robert Contiguglia (pronounced: Con-ti-GUL-ia).
Now based in New York City, the duo pianists return to their hometown Thursday, Oct. 1, for a concert benefiting the Schweinfurth Memorial Art Center, to be staged at Auburn's East Middle School, 159 Franklin St. Concert organizers wisely scheduled a 7 p.m. performance for the convenience of families with young children, as well as seniors who prefer an early evening and music lovers driving in from Syracuse. Honoring the 100th anniversary of George Gershwin's birth on Sept. 26, 1898, the program opens with the composer's own four-hand setting of his Cuban Overture , followed by En Blanc et Noir by Claude Debussy. The program's first half closes with Variations on a Theme of Haydn, Opus 56b by Johannes Brahms. After intermission, the artists perform Franz Liszt's own transcription of his

Wolken the Walk
It took awhile for Randy Wolken to decide to seek the Republican designation to run for mayor on this fall's ballot. "Actually, I really enjoy my work at the Manufacturers Association of Central New York," he said last week, reflecting on the decision. "It's great to help with building companies, helping companies be successful in this community. But the city is not headed in the right direction and I have real concerns about the future of the city. It's time to get in and talk about where we're going in the future. I want to spend this next month before the Republicans choose their candidate talking about where we can go as a community. We can be a great city again. We have all the resources necessary to do that. But we need strong, solid leadership, a leader we can trust in order to move into the 21st century in a progressive manner."
This month Wolken will be taking a leave of absence from MACNY to do that talking. Four years ago Wolken was the first Republican to declare mayoral intentions, pledging he would be in the race all the way, even if it required a primary fight. At the GOP nominating convention, however, he was told after the party's ward committees voted that he had lost to Bernie Mahoney, even though Republican county chair Bob Giarusso would not release the vote totals. On the spot, Mahoney anointed Wolken the party's candidate of the future. Although the most-heard phrase of the evening from ward committee members was, "I want to vote for Randy, but I've got to vote for Bernie," Wolken demurred a primary challenge. Within a month he moved from the executive directorship of the Samaritan Center to the MACNY presidency.

McEwen, Jr. Visual Arts Series Digital artist Jon Haddock brings a unique art exhibition that connects structures in his home of Tempe, Arizona, with Elon and Burlington, NC. His theme deals with the ubiquity of modern suburban architecture contrasted with architecture that is unique, though undesirable, because of its age, reputation, or current usage. While most of these unique prints focus on Phoenix, Ariz. (motels along Van Buren Avenue, crack houses in South Phoenix), Haddock has also created work specifically for this exhibition utilizing references from local structures selected by Elon art students. On exhibit through October 27.

Arts and Amusements March 15, 2002 Acclaimed Pianists to Perform at Thomaston Opera House
The Thomaston Opera House has been selected by the Adams Foundation of Santa Barbara, CA as one of five cities to participate in a pilot series of piano recitals by acclaimed pianists in the spring of 2002. The series is designed to reestablish piano recitals in communities throughout America. The recitals at the Thomaston Opera House will feature duo-pianists Richard and John Contiguglia on Sunday, March 17 at 2 p.m.; and pianist Robert Blocker on Saturday, May 4 at 8 p.m. The idea for Adams Piano Recitals was born a year ago after Stephen Adams, philanthropist and piano lover, heard the Contiguglia brothers perform at Yale and in Santa Barbara. The foundation's intent is to make possible live piano recitals at affordable prices by nationally and internationally acclaimed American artists performing on the finest available Steinway pianos in small, acoustically superior halls. Richard and John Contiguglia are identical twins who have collaborated as a piano duo since they were five years old. They have received rave reviews from critics on both sides of the Atlantic. The Washington Post described them as "Phenomenal Duo Pianists," the national newspaper of Holland, De Trou, hailed them as "in a class by themselves." Records and Recording proclaimed, "They have given the two-piano medium a whole new dimension. The Contiguglias stand apart in a lofty world of their own, unrivaled and supreme." Byron Belt, for Newhouse News Service, called them "foremost among today's duo-pianists."

This year, Santa made me a present of a collection of Gershwin songs. For a very long time, I've been trying to figure out the harmonies on my own, with little success. Seeing the sheet music made the reasons (other than the limitations of my ear) apparent. Those harmonies are hard, by gosh! - augmented chords with flattened sevenths, chords built from adjacent keys, unusual voicings. I'm currently studying "Nice Work If You Can Get It" and have reached the point where my own playing doesn't make me sick, but, as we say in the Midwest, I still have a ways. Still, a Gershwin accompaniment satisfies the hands. It's great fun, once you've got it. I wonder what real pianists, who probably get this stuff at sight, must think. At least four really good ones have provided virtuoso paraphrases of Gershwin's music: Earl Wild, Percy Grainger, Beryl Rubinstein, and Gershwin himself in
