RICHARD AND JOHN CONTIGUGLIA are identical twins who have collaborated as a piano duo since they were five years old. Their historic recording of Beethoven's 9 th Symphony , transcribed for two pianos by Franz Liszt, was awarded a Grand Prix by the Liszt Society of Budapest. The Congigulia's each received their B.A. degrees from Yale, summa cum laude , and received the Master of Music degrees from the Yale Graduate School of Music. John also studied chemistry while Richard took additional courses in literature and philosophy. They studied the duo repertoire for four years with the legendary British pianist Dame Myra Hess. Richard and John were born of Italian immigrant parents in Auburn, NY, the last children, and second set of twins, in a family of seven children. Without a doubt, the most extraordinary musical event of the twins' youth was their performance in their hometown, when they were 12 years old, of a group of two-piano pieces in the middle of a solo piano recital by the legendary pianist-composer, Percy Grainger. Thus began an association with Grainger which led to a lifelong interest in the man and his music. Following their concert together, Grainger presented the young pianists with many of his two-piano scores. Throughout their career, Richard and John have programmed and recorded a great deal of Grainger's music, and have released two CDs of Grainger music. Early in their career, during the Vietnam War years, the Contiguglias were on a tour of the Pacific. While in Guam, they gave an impromptu Christmas concert at the U.S. Navel Hospital. After the concert, which included works of Mozart, Schubert, Brahms and Hindemith, one young American told them, “Until today, I never realized the power of great music to make one forget the problems of this world. It's better than LSD.” Richard and John were so moved by this experience that, when they returned to the States, they performed, whenever possible in veterans' hospitals, nursing homes and mental hospitals in the New York area.

ROCK HILL, S.C. - Richard and John Contiguglia, who have been called “Phenomenal Duo-Pianists” by the Washington Post, will appear at Winthrop University on Oct. 12. Their recital will be at 3 p.m. in Frances May Barnes Recital Hall.
The native New York twins have been playing as a piano duo since the age of 5. They have performed with major orchestras throughout the world, including the Cleveland Orchestra, Pittsburgh Symphony, the Atlanta Symphony, the National Symphony, the Boston Pops, the Netherlands Chamber Orchestra and Rotterdam Philharmonic. They have been seen on national television in Holland, Great Britain and the United States. The brothers graduated in the top 1% of their class at Yale, receiving their B.A. degrees summa cum laude. Two years later, they received M.Mus. degrees from the Yale Graduate School of Music at the top of their class. The brothers spent four years in London studying with the legendary British pianist, Dame Myra Hess. An important part of their career has involved discovering, performing and recording unusual and forgotten works from the duo-piano repertoire. The two recently created their own recording company, Gemini CD Classics, LLC, to produce and market their own CDs. (

Visiting Musicians Throughout Elon College history there have been many different music programs performed at our own Whitley Auditorium. They range from the performances of our own orchestra and band, to visiting soloist, to modern country, rock and folk bands. To no surprise the music has changed throughout the decades. In the 30's more musicians came to perform at Elon. In the early 30's our first performance of Handels " Messiah " was given. This is a tradition that has lasted to the present day at Elon. Earle Spicer in 1938, accompanied by Mude Freeman performed at Elon. Spicer, a baritone, who began singing in his boyhood has appeared before crowned heads and royalties of Europe and has been a soloist with many of the worlds leading orchestras. Francis Hall and Rudolph Gruen also gave a piano duet. The 60's brought more and more artists here to Elon. George Shearing and Quintet performed at Elon's Mid-Winter dance, as well as Ralph Marterie and his Orchestra. Natalie Bondana, a lyric soprano and famous opera singer also performed. Thomas Richner, a New York musician, gave a Piano and Organ recital. Virgil Fox also gave a concert in 1962 at the May Day concert. Alivio Diaz, a classical guitarist performed. Eddie Allen and his Orchestra in 1963 which featured Sheryl as their vocalist, played the Homecoming Dance. The 70's brought more artists. Goose Creek Symphony, Herbie Mann, Jimmy Buffet and his band Coral Reefers Band, The Outlaws, Elvin Bishop, Linda Ronstandt, Earl Scruggs Reven, and Mountain all gave wonderful performances that were highly accepted by their audiences. In 1974 the beginnings of the college radio station were forming. WELN 91.1 was to broadcast rock, country, educational and political messages to Elon listeners. WELN 91.1 didn't actually start until 1977 due to complications and funding.

Prudence McDaniel, Cello For over a decade, the Marian Anderson String Quartet has brought inspiration and hope to every segment of American society. With performance venues ranging from the concert stage to soup kitchens and from presidential inaugurals to juvenile correctional facilities, the Quartet continues to uphold its mission to create new and diverse audiences for the field of chamber music. On September 30, 1989, the members of the Marian Anderson String Quartet, then known as the Chaminade Quartet, came together unaware that they would soon change history. In 1991, the Quartet won the International Cleveland Quartet Competition, becoming the first African-American ensemble in history to ever win a classical music competition. To highlight this singular achievement, the members of the Quartet asked permission of the great contralto Marian Anderson to use her name as their own. Miss Anderson responded with heartfelt approval and in a memorable show of gratitude, the newly named Marian Anderson String Quartet played for its legendary namesake and her nephew, conductor James DePreist.

About Us Our Season Tickets Past Artists ... Home Past Artists Established in 1892 as the Tuesday Morning Musical Club, Tuesday Musical's first concerts were held in local homes and the Fontenelle Hotel ballroom. After 1911 it expanded into local theaters and emerged as a non-profit concert series of international artists, open to all. Many of the artists, unknown at the time of their engagement here, have since become legend; some have been relegated to oblivion, but all contributed in some measure to the musical life of Omaha. It has been estimated that in the first 70 years following the change from club to non-profit organization, Tuesday Musical brought 95 percent of the world's greatest artists to Omaha. Here is a partial list of artists who have been part of this pioneer endeavor:
