History of the Van Cliburn International Piano Competition
Van Cliburn is well known for his generous support of the arts, however you may be surprised to know that he did not establish the competition which bears his name. He was, however, the most astonished person present when Dr. Irl Allison announced the establishment of the competition in 1958. Dr. Allison, a music educator, had long desired to launch a competition which would help music student raise the quality of their work. He began by founding the National Guild of Piano Teachers, which used a system of auditions to help teachers and their students assess their progress and proficiency. He dreamed of a prize winning competition and spoke of establishing one from time to time. Then at a dinner honoring Van Cliburn, without any warning, he announced the Guild would sponsor an international quadrennial competition with the unheard-of prize of $10,000! He said it would be named after Van Cliburn, as the winner of the Tchaikovsky Competition in Moscow. The organizer of that dinner, Mrs. Grace Ward Lankford, began working with Dr. Allison immediately since the Fort Worth Piano Teachers Forum had plans to launch a competition as well. The two plans merged, and Mrs. Lankford rolled up her sleeves to recruit community support. By dint of determination, cajolery and sheer pluck, she enlisted the support of the Fort Worth Chamber of Commerce and Texas Christian University. Piano teachers shared their enthusiasm as volunteer workers in a vacant room at the Boswell Dairy. Soon townsfolk, music lovers, and civic leaders all donated time, stuffing envelopes, licking stamps and carting bundles of mail off to the post office. These volunteers laid the foundation of what has become a world-renowned competition.

with Rich DiSilvio T he 2005 Van Cliburn Competition has focused much attention on Franz Liszt, and for good reason...Liszt's works are featured on the program more than any other composer. As such the Star-Telegram's reporter Punch Shaw contacted me (Rich DiSilvio) for an interview for this special article. Although only small excerpts were included in the final article, which is very nicely written and I thank Shaw once again for interviewing me , I felt it was necessary to publish the full interview below, along with these cordial comments. Shaw's final article describes me as one "...who maintains a worshipful Web site devoted to Liszt and his music." To the readers unfamiliar with my work I would like to clarify this worship of Franz Liszt in that my worship is not blind, as many stereotypical fans might be, but well developed by many long years of study, and most importantly listening to the master's works. Here in lies one of the focal points in my Commentary, which has made this site the premier site on Liszt since its inception back in 1996. The mere fact that many today read volumes of material about Liszt, some of which is plagued with bias, yet fail to sit and listen to a broad selection of his works before passing final judgment on his works is crucial. Shaw clearly researched well and made many sound points, yet the headline of the article claims to reveal the

INVESTOR INFORMATION IRVING, Texas - October 13, 2000 Exxon Mobil Corporation announced today that it will be the principal corporate sponsor of the Eleventh Van Cliburn International Piano Competition. ExxonMobil began sponsoring the quadrennial Van Cliburn International Piano Competition in 1985. The Corporation is expanding its sponsorship of the Eleventh Competition to be held in Fort Worth, Texas, May 25 - June 10, 2001, to include the international screening recitals in Europe and the United States, the Competition television documentary, and the national radio series.
"The Van Cliburn Competition is one of the most important instrumental music competitions in the world," said Lee R. Raymond, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer, Exxon Mobil Corporation, and member of the Honorary Board of Directors of the Van Cliburn Foundation. "We are very pleased to continue our support of the Van Cliburn Competition, an international cultural event that reinforces ExxonMobil's commitment to excellence in the arts."
The Van Cliburn International Piano Competition was established in 1962 to honor Texas pianist Van Cliburn's sensational triumph at the first Tchaikovsky International Piano Competition in Moscow in 1958. From the hundreds of applications received by the Van Cliburn Foundation, approximately 120 pianists are selected to perform a 40-minute recital in public concerts in Europe and the United States, which are judged by a five-member jury. These international concerts, which draw competitors from all over the world, will take place in January and February 2001 in: Utrecht, The Netherlands; Lugano, Switzerland; Moscow; Budapest; New York; Chicago; and Fort Worth. In March 2001, the Van Cliburn Foundation will announce the names of the 30 competitors selected to participate in the Eleventh Competition in Fort Worth.
