In the classical music world, pianist Van Cliburn is a living legend. He is an icon bearing witness to a significant event that occurred during the height of the cold war at the time the Soviet Union was reaping an enormous propaganda victory from the launch of its ground-breaking satellite, Sputnik. Van Cliburn, a young Juilliard graduate, age 23 from Kilgore, Texas, (a town most people had never heard of before) went to Moscow in 1958 to compete in an international piano competition whose outcome was rigged in favor of Soviet and Warsaw block participants and won the gold medal. He became an instant cold war hero who restored American prestige internationally, and his victory proved to the world that one of our young musicians, nurtured in a privately funded institution of higher learning could hold his own in competition with hothouse-grown, state-supported Soviet musicians. After his victory, Van Cliburn toured extensively and made new fans everywhere. His recordings made shortly after his win in Moscow sold millions of copies and are still available today. However, in the 1970s Van Cliburn began to retire from the concert stage, which was quite understandable in the light of the over bookings in the early years of his enormous popular success. He simply had committed himself to too many performances and needed a rest.

The Twelfth Van Cliburn International Piano Competition, will be held in Fort Worth, Texas, from May 20 to June 5. Founded in 1962 to honor Van Cliburn's celebrated victory in the first Moscow Tchaikovsky International Competition, the Cliburn Competition takes place every four years in the artist's home town.
Coordinated by the Van Cliburn Foundation on a commission-free basis, the contracted tour dates during the three years following the competition have a combined value estimated at well over $1 million. In addition to worldwide tours and cash prizes, medalists will receive a recording release of their prize-winning performances on the Harmonia Mundi USA label, as well as widespread media exposure through radio, television, and internet programs.
The Award Ceremony on June 5 will be hosted by Academy Award-winning actor Anthony Hopkins, who, in addition to his work on the screen, also has a passion for classical music, playing the piano, and composing. He explains how he got involved with the competition:
The competition jury will consist of 12 members, and the screening jury will have five. Maestro John Giordano, former Music Director and conductor of the Fort Worth Symphony Orchestra, will return as chairman of both juries.

Chester Rosson (June 1997) At the 1958 First International Tchaikovsky Piano Competition, Russia and the World found out what Van Cliburn's teachers and fellow students at the Juilliard School had known all along: Van was ochen kharasho (very good). His Moscow triumph, both as the artist who won First Prize and as an audience favorite, continued when he returned to a hero's welcome in the United States. Nothing quite like it had occurred in the small world of classical music before. His arrival in New York City was more like that accorded a certain British rock band in the sixties, and his triumphal tour continued from city to city. Van Cliburn's recording that year of the winning piece, Tchaikovsky's Piano Concerto No. 1, set a standard that has yet to be surpassed; the most popular classical piano recording ever, it has never been out of print. Cliburn has always stressed the fact that he is a Texan. His father had a job in Shreveport at the time; and, as it says in his 1993 authorized biography by critic Howard Reich, "By the time Van turned six, the family had moved back where it belonged, to ... Kilgore."

Editor's note: This recital took place early in 2004. If you'd like to read about the concert, please click here An Evening with Van Cliburn, a benefit recital for The Humane Society of the United States, will bring together two of the finer things in life: classical music and animal protection. Specifically, the concert will combine the music of the world-renowned pianist, in an intimate solo setting, with the opportunity to support the nation's largest animal-protection organization in its ongoing mission. The HSUS, in fact, is preparing to celebrate 50 years of promoting the protection of all animals, and we couldn't think of a better way to launch our golden anniversary than with a recital by the much-celebrated musician. An Evening with Van Cliburn is scheduled for 8 p.m. Wednesday, February 25, 2004, at the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts in Washington D.C. (You can order special VIP tickets by clicking on the link below.) Under the auspices of Honorary Chairs Angel and Paul Harvey, the concert is sure to be one of the highlights of the Kennedy Center's season. Ambassadors to the United States, members of Congress, corporate leaders, and HSUS members from around the country are expected to gather in the Kennedy Center's Concert Hall to hear the musician who first burst onto the world stage in 1958.

Van Cliburn at The Kennedy Center: Making a Humane World One Note at a Time
Glenwood Jackson Van Cliburn had already stirred the sold-out crowd to its feet three separate times during his February 25 performance at the Kennedy Center. He already had converted several casual listeners into true believers by intermission. And he had already returned for two encores before an audience, including First Lady Laura Bush, that insisted on more. How could he add a final exclamation to the evening? Cliburn, the 69-year-old Texan, had one last surprise. He performed Franz Liszt's transcription of Robert Schumann's Widmung (Dedication), the love song that the German composer wrote for his beloved wife, Clara. But in this context, on this evening, Cliburn transformed the classic German lied into a memorial for "all who have ever lost a family pet," including, he noted, the First Family. The Bushes had lost their 15-year-old English springer spaniel, Spot, to old age just days earlier, on Saturday, February 21.
