Op. 36, No. 1) [1794] Allegro Presto As a follow-up to his highly acclaimed debut CD last year of Bach’s Well-Tempered Clavier Book II, 11-year-old pianist Albert Wong has chosen to record five of Muzio Clementi's greatest piano sonatas (the Sonata in B minor Op. 40, No. 2; Sonata D Major Op. 40, No. 3; Sonata C Major Op. 37, No. 1; Sonata B-flat Major Op. 24, No. 2 and Sonata A Major Op. 33, No. 1). The performances by this extremely talented piano prodigy are both elegant and sensitive, revealing the amazing capabilities of this young performer. "The Clementi sonatas challenge the performer to respond to a wide range of dramatic characteristics. Wong does a reasonably good job in meeting this challenge. He brings a sense of dignity to the more solemn moments, and captures much of the humor and playfulness that percolate throughout these scores. If Wong misses the more sophisticated corners of this wit, as well as the last degree of gravity in the darker sections, he may be forgiven. Albert Wong was 11 years old when he made this recording.

He is best known for being the first composer to write nocturnes
Biography
Born in Dublin , Field first studied the piano under his father, who was a violinist , and later under Tommaso Giordani . He later went to London where he studied under Muzio Clementi . He toured Europe both to demonstrate the pianos that Clementi made and as a concert pianist before settling in Saint Petersburg in Russia where he was a popular performer and teacher. He died in Moscow
Music
Field is best remembered as the first composer to write nocturnes , single movement pieces for piano which were not in a fixed form (as the minuet or fugue are) and which maintained a single mood throughout. These pieces greatly influenced Frederic Chopin , who went on to write 21 nocturnes himself. Inasmuch as Field's nocturnes were the first single-movement piano character pieces, they can be seen as important forerunners of many other Romantic composers' works, among them

Print Music MUSIC Notes COMPOSER Leading Composers SITEMAP INTRODUCTION ARTICLE BECOMING A SOLO PIANIST, PART ONE By Trevor Barnard, Assisted by Robert Zocchi Introduction Any aspiring young pianist who wants to become a soloist - or indeed, a virtuoso - has only a few short years to prepare for a career in music. At the tertiary level, there is only time to study, in depth, a handful of pieces. That handful should be carefully selected, as their choice often sets the scene for the future. This series is not only aimed at those who wish to pursue a career in music; in addition to being a guide for teachers it will also interest anyone who wishes to steadily and logically improve their playing. The levels of difficulty begin from intermediate or matriculation standard and, ultimately, reach the virtuoso rank. Student pianists and teachers will discover works they may not have known existed; and repertoire that will bring enjoyment and satisfaction through the years to come. There are hundreds of listed works to choose from. Here, against each work, you will also see the work's suggested level of difficulty. You choose the type of music you will enjoy most - first, from the list of composers, and then from the level you feel is appropriate. As you become more proficient, you move to higher levels and the music of other composers.

Muzio Clementi
Muzio Clementi overleed in 1832 in Evesham. Zijn didactische werken behoren tot de standaardwerken van de pianopedagodiek.

Soft and Loud ~
Jane Austen and the pianoforte
JASA member Margaret Coulson has always been fascinated with the square piano, and was delighted to see the Clementi in the drawing room of the Jane Austen House Museum in Chawton. During a visit to her sister in Berkshire last year, a neighbour invited them to supper to ‘meet’ a recently bought, beautifully restored square piano from about 1815. They sang songs of the period, and she was even allowed to PLAY the instrument. So she was obviously hooked! She found that the touch was a little different to modern pianos but its tone was sweet and pure.
Harpsichord versus Pianoforte
The forerunner of the harpsichord was the ‘psaltery’ or early stringed instrument, played by plucking with a plectrum or with the fingers. It was in widespread use in the 14th and 15th centuries. In the harpsichord family the strings lie horizontally to the keyboard and when a note is struck a small piece of wood (a Jack) rises, with its plectra or quills. The quills pluck the strings and then fall back without touching them again. This produces a pleasant ‘twang’. The speed and pressure of the fingers does not greatly affect the volume of sound.

Muzio Clementi was born in Roma, in 1752. His father was a silversmith, and became aware of his son's musical talent at a young age.
When he was seven, Clementi was sent to musical instruction. He was so good a pupil that two years later he gained a position as an organist. A rich Englishman was impressed by Clementi's gift, and decided to adopt him and bring him to England. In England, Clementi received an excellent education in music and academics.
In 1770, Clementi made his first performance on the piano. His audience was greatly taken with his playing, and this was the beginning of a incredible successful career as a concert pianist. He was raised to the highest level of the pianists of the day in short order. Clementi started a European tour in 1781, when he travelled to France, Deutschland, and Österreich. In Vindabona, Clementi was asked by the Emperor Joseph II to enter a musical duel with Mozart Clementi performed a piece of his own composition, a piano sonata in B-flat major, Mozart performed a dazzling series of variations.

59. "The Rediscovered Piano Sonatas" Of Muzio Clementi
Piano music from Wolfmusic, specializing in piano sonatas of muzio clementi.
http://www.wolfmusic-publications.com/scores.html
"The Rediscovered Piano Sonatas," Volume I, of Muzio Clementi (1752-1832), contains six piano sonatas. The three sonatas of Opus 10 were edited from the 'revised' autographs, copies of which were obtained from The British Library (London). To the knowledge of the editor, these revised versions were never published. The original versions of the Opus 10 piano sonatas were composed in 1783. The revisions were made after 1800, according to Tyson's "Thematic Catalogue of the Works of Muzio Clementi." Also included in Volume I are three sonatas, previously unavailable for purchase in modern notation. These sonatas were edited from authentic 19th-century editions. The volume measures 9 x 12.25 and is 'wiro' bound for the pianist's convenience. The sonatas of Volume I will be recorded on the Calcante Records label in the near future. The projected Volume II in this series will contain the earliest surviving composition of Clementi, written in 1775. This sonata, exhibiting incredible stylistic maturity, was edited from the unpublished autograph of the 13-year-old Clementi. Also included will be various sonatas edited from autograph or 19th-century editions. The editor of our Clementi series holds an M.A. in Musicology and is a college teacher of Music Theory, Music History, and Humanities. She is a pianist, flutist, and harpsichordist, with many years of performance and teaching experience. Her ongoing research of Clementi's music continues to reveal the exquisite piano compositions of this significant 18th-century composer, and to verify his important influence on composers of the 18th and 19th centuries.
