Muzio Clementi Muzio Clementi Clementi is best known for his collection of piano studies, Gradus ad Parnassum , to which Debussy's piece "Doctor Gradus ad Parnassum" (the first movement of his suite Children's Corner ) makes playful allusion. Similarly his sonatinas would remain a must for piano students everywhere, until late 20th century. Erik Satie, a contemporary of Debussy, would spoof these sonatinas (specifically the sonatina Op. 36 N° 1 ) in his Sonatine Bureaucratique. Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart held an inexplicable dislike for Clementi (and perhaps Italians in general), which has led some to call them "arch rivals." However, this distinction would not be correct, because Clementi himself does not seem to have reciprocated Mozart's feelings. The pianist Vladimir Horowitz developed a special fondness for Clementi's work, comparing some of them to the best works of Beethoven. The restoration of Clementi's image as an artist to be taken seriously is not least due to his efforts.

muzio clementi Mutius Philippus Vincentius Franciscus Xaverius. (17521832).clementi. Composer, music publisher, and pianist.
http://www.hoasm.org/XIIC/Clementi.html
Muzio Clementi [Mutius Philippus Vincentius Franciscus Xaverius]
Composer, music publisher, and pianist. As a boy he studied counterpoint with Antonio Burom, organ with Condiceli, and possibly voice with Giuseppe Carpani. An Englishman, Peter Beckford, heard him play in 1766 and paid Clementi's father to allow him to take the boy to his English country estate for intensive musical studies, and to serve as his house musician. For the next seven years Clementi took advantage of the relatively isolated Dorsetshire setting, practicing harpsichord and producing his first compositions, a Mass and an oratorio (both lost), and keyboard sonatas. At the end of this period he moved to London, began concertizing perhaps in 1775, and in 1779 and 1780 published his opp. 2-4 (works for keyboard). Among positions he held during the 1770s was that of keyboard conductor at the King's Theatre, Haymarket. In 1780 he began a concert tour that included Paris (where he allegedly played for Marie Antoinette) and Vienna, where he engaged in the famous keyboard contest with Mozart in 1781. The latter wrote to his father of Clementi's remarkable technique, especially in passages of thirds or octaves. "Otherwise he hasn't a kreutzer's worth of feeling or taste. In a worda sheer mechanicus" (12 Jan. 1782). In addition, Clementi's opp. 7, 9, and 10 were published in Vienna, 1782-83. He returned to London in 1783 by way of Lyons, where his op. 8 was published (three sonatas for keyboard). After reestablishing London's Hanover Square Concerts in 1783, he returned to Lyons for the sake of an 18-year-old girl, whose disapproving father again drove him off.

OK so let me be disingenuous. This CD is of an 11-year old pianist and I think the adults responsible for bringing young Albert Wong into the recording studio should have known better. Sure he’s a remarkably talented pianist – a child prodigy indeed – but this pianism should be kept out of the professional arena until he’s mature enough to understand what being a successful adult concert pianist is all about. There’s apparently no stopping him, however, or the people encouraging him. This Clementi disk is the follow-up to his debut CD – Book 2 of Bach’s Well Tempered Clavier, recorded when he was 10. He’s played at Carnegie Hall, during Earl Wild’s 85th birthday concert, and regularly appears on TV shows and in concerts in the US, particularly in his home state of Texas.

Readers must bear with me for the slowness of updating...eventually this page will be an index, and the composers will have their separate pages, but for now I'm listing a few composers together. KARL CZERNY
I had always considered Karl Czerny as a teacher pure and simple. He was the teacher of Liszt, and the composer of countless forgotten studies which successive generations of students have sweated over. I remember spending over a year on his op. 699 when I was about 23. Very fine studies they were, too, but not the sort of thing you would play to anyone, let alone record. But I have discovered that Czerny could write wonderful music. I've recently been working on his set of variations "La Ricordanca". This was a favourite of Vladimir Horowitz, who often used to play it during his recitals. A lovely tune, and the variations really sparkle. There is no other phrase for it... MUZIO CLEMENTI
Dates: 1752-1832; born Rome; moved to England aged 13, lived in England until his death at Evesham. Whilst a child, his playing attracted the attention of an English traveller Peter Beckford. Beckford "bought Clementi of his father for seven years" and brought him to a country estate just north of Blandford Forum. Clementi spent the next seven years in solitary study and practice at the harpsichord. When he became free of his obligations to Beckford he moved to London, aged about 22.
