Frederic Francois Chopin (1810 - 1849)
F rederic Chopin was born in 1810, in Zelazowa-Wola, a town near Warsaw, Poland. Publicly performing on the piano at the age of eight, Chopin began to compose soon afterward. With his lyrical, often melancholy, compositions, he brought romantic piano music to unprecedented heights of expressiveness. A prodigy as a pianist and a composer, he began performing at aristocratic salons in Warsaw, and in 1826 he began full-time studies at the Warsaw Conservatory. After concert appearances in Vienna and Munich, he settled in Paris, where he gave his first concert in 1831. Although he remained always devoted to Polish culture and artists, he never returned to his homeland. In Paris he became closely associated with the principal composers, artists, and literary figures of his time. He was a virtuoso interpreter of his own works, but his dislike of playing in public made him prefer teaching and composing to the concert stage. In 1836, Liszt introduced him to Mme Dudevant, better known by her pen name George Sand, with whom he spent the winter of 1838–39 in Majorca; there, despite worsening pulmonary illness, he wrote his 24 preludes, which are counted among his finest compositions. The stormy affair with the novelist lasted until 1847, by which time Chopin's illness had developed into tuberculosis. He made a last concert tour through Great Britain in 1848. Chopin established the piano as a solo instrument free from choral or orchestral influence. Even in the piano concertos in E Minor (1833) and in F Minor (1836), the orchestra is completely dominated by the piano.

The Frederick Chopin International Piano Competition
The Frederick Chopin International Piano Competition is one of the oldest events of its type in the world, and enjoys great prestige and universal renown. In the seventy years of its existence, the competition has evolved and transformed itself, altered and improved its form, and created its own extensive tradition. The initiator of the Frederick Chopin Piano Competition was Prof. Jerzy Zurawlew (1887-1980), an outstanding Polish pianist, teacher and composer.
Prof. Jerzy ¯urawlew
The first Chopin Competition took place on 23-30 January 1927 in the concert hall of the Warsaw Philharmonic. The next Competitions in 1932 and 1937 were also held there, at a five year interval, in accordance with the rules of the organisers. The 1942 Competition was not held owing to the Second World War, and the Competition could not be continued until several years after the war. The first postwar and the fourth International Frederick Chopin Competition took place in 1949, in the "Roma" concert hall, which is still standing in Nowogrodzka Str., the temporary home of the Warsaw Philharmonic and the Opera. The Competition became the culmination of the Chopin Year, celebrating the hundredth anniversary of the death of this great composer. The next Competition was organised six years later, in 1955. This change to the traditional five year-cycle was caused by the reconstruction of the Warsaw Philharmonic Hall, which was promoted soon afterwards to the rank of a national institution. From 1955 onwards, the Frederick Chopin International Piano Competition has been held in the National Philharmonic Hall every five years without a break.

Executive summary: Classical composer fond of the piano Polish musical composer and pianist born at Zelazowa-Wola, near Warsaw, on the 22nd of February 1810. His father, of French origin, born at Nancy in 1770, had married a Polish lady, Justine Krzyzanowska. Frederic was their third child. His first musical education he received from Adalbert Ziwny, a Czech musician, who is said to have been a passionate admirer of Johann Sebastian Bach . He also received a good general education at one of the first colleges of Warsaw, where he was supported by Prince Antoine Radziwill, a generous protector of artistic talent and himself well known as the composer of music to Goethe 's Faust and other works. His musical genius opened to Chopin the best circles of Polish society, at that time unrivalled in Europe for its ease of intercourse, the beauty and grace of its women, and its liberal appreciation of artistic gifts. These early impressions were of lasting influence on Chopin's development. While at college he received thorough instruction in the theory of his art from Joseph Elsner, a learned musician and director of the conservatoire at Warsaw. When in 1829 he left his native town for Vienna, where his debut as a pianist took place, he was in all respects a perfectly formed and developed artist. There is in his compositions little of that gradual progress which, for instance, in

Chateau De Bouesse: History and Guestbook
Chateau De Bouesse - 36570 Bouesse - France
Joan of Arc
T he legendary French military leader, Joan of Arc, used the Chateau de Bouesse as an outpost when she would visit the builder, and her top commander, Raoul de Beaucourt.
Frederic Chopin
I t is said that Chopin had composed many popular classical music and notes while staying at the Chateau de Bouesse. It is rumored that Ms. Dupin ( George Sand below ) would check into the hotel as a man, to be with Chopin, a famous pianist-composer, who had also stayed at the Chateau. Each year, a competition is held in honor of Chopin and his classical music to discover new stars among a very large group of promising music composers.
George Sand
G eorge Sand (a famous French novelist of the early 19th century) was also a visitor to the Chateau. George Sand was really an alias for a woman by the name of Aurore Dupin, the friend and mistress of the infamous Chopin. Since it was deemed 'inappropriate' for Mme. Dupin and M. Chopin to be in contact, Aurore Dupin would check into the Chateau under the guise of a man, George Sand. This would allow the two lovers to maintain a veil of friendship, while allowing them to pursue their forbidden love. The name would also provide a vessel for Mme. Dupin to achieve the male permissive success she so desired.
Ghostly Visitors
N ot fulfilled by satisfying the needs of visitors from this world, it seems that the Chateau has been attracting visitors from 'another' world. Having cut into the walls to make space for the added bathrooms, the owner of the castle thinks that they may have liberated some poor spirit of times gone by.

Chopin: Polonaises No6 As my source of inspiration today, I have chosen Frederic Chopin's Nocturn in E flat major, Opus 9, No 2 , composed when he was barely out of his teens, and is perhaps my favourite. I say 'perhaps' advisedy because, as on many occasions, it seems so at the time of playing. It is a lovely piece of music. 'Nocturne' means 'night piece', or music that is quiet and pensive in mood. The long melody of this piece unfolds into a mood of dreamy contemplation. Towards the end Chopin adds some wonderfully decorative pieces which to me suggests the shimmer of moonlight; and then the piece ends as quietly and serenely as it began. This patriotic Polish composer was in fact half French and left Poland at the age of 20 never to return.. He composed most of his music in France, where he established his legendary reputation as a virtuoso performer. The second of four children of French born Nicholas Chopin and his Polish wife Justina, Frederic was born in Warsaw, Poland on the 1st March, 1810, and became a child prodigy. His Polonaise in G was published in 1817, and a year later, at the age of eight, his brilliant piano technique captivated Warsaw's society audiences.

Frederic Chopin - the Greatest Polish Composer
Polish composer and pianist of the romantic period, regarded by many as the greatest composer of the piano music. Born in Zelazowa Wola near Warsaw, Poland in 1810. His father was French, his mother Polish. Chopin studied the piano at the Warsaw Conservatory. He played his first public concert at the age of 7, and published first compositions at 15. By the late 1820s, Chopin had won a great reputation as a piano virtuoso and composer of piano pieces. He toured Europe, giving concert performances acclaimed by audiences and critics. In 1831 he arrived in Paris where he became well known as a pianist, teacher and composer. In 1838 Chopin began to suffer from tuberculosis. He died in Paris in 1849 at the age of just 39. Chopin's music has many references to his Polish origin. His mazurkas reflect the rhythms and melodies of Polish folk music, and his polonaises convey the heroic spirit of Poland occupied by other countries during his life. He composed ballades, scherzos, waltzes and etudes. His music is lyrical and romantic, very original with harmony, subtlety and poetic beauty.

Final Paper
November 10, 1999 To briefly introduce Frederic Chopin, one should comment on his amazing contribution to music. He composed almost entirely piano music and produced a wealth of music that forever changed the way we listen to and understand the piano. He naturally transferred his fervent emotion into music. Born in 1810 in the Duchy of Warsaw, he began playing the piano at age three and was composing at age seven. He was a passionate, energetic youth until the onset of tuberculosis in his early twenties. He continued to compose, teach piano lessons, and give small concerts throughout his life, despite his physical weakness. Slowly but painfully, his physical and mental health deteriorated until his death in 1849. In studying child development in his book Childhood and Society One of the most influential contributions to our understanding of human development is Erikson’s theory of the eight stages of development. At each stage there is a crisis, which is actually the psychosocial development of critical steps-"‘critical’ being a characteristic of turning points, of moments of decision between progress and regression." Erikson explained that at each stage a new conflict adds a new ego quality. Chopin presents an interesting subject for analysis using the eight stages. The fact that generativity didn’t bring Chopin satisfaction or happiness tends to go against Erikson’s model for the generativity versus stagnation. Erikson claimed that generativity will bring "enrichment," which implies that Chopin would become better or more fulfilled by such acts. Despite his contributions to the world, Chopin continued to feel emotionally unsatisfied. In addition, the fact that Chopin reached this stage and experienced generativity after failing to accomplish intimacy shows another anomaly to Erikson’s stages. Thus, even though Erikson’s eight stages of development are a valuable model for studying the development of a person, they will not always progress in order or in the same way for everybody, and a failure at one step does not necessarily cause a halt in one’s development.
