Monday, August 17, 1998 Host for widows' dinner continues to duck the limelight By Bill Whitaker When it comes to that biblical bit about doing good deeds and expecting no recognition in return, the hosts of this month's "Appreciation Dinner for Widowed Women" are true believers. Although more than 150 area widow women - of all races, creeds and colors - know just who the hosts of the elaborate Aug. 8 dinner at the Petroleum Club are, the married couple who spearhead this unique event have steadfastly declined any limelight for themselves. In fact, the 57-year-old Abilenian who came up with the idea declines to even come to the dinner himself, preferring to leave the joy and splendor to his 48-year-old wife, fellow organizers and our area's widowed women, most of them astonished anyone chooses to remember them at all. "It was one of the most enjoyable things I have ever been to," said former <I>Reporter-News<I> staffer Rebel Jackson, one of the widows honored at this year's dinner, the fourth annual. "Dian Owen gave one of the most inspiring talks I had heard in a long time." Among those on hand to salute widows - U.S. Rep. Charlie Stenholm, Dr. John Stevens of Abilene Christian University and Taylor County Judge Lee Hamilton. Paul Matta sang and even whistled, while child prodigy Ryan Chalkley played the piano.

5. Factors Determining Individual Sentences

History of this Reference (Digest)

5.2 A central issue is whether a more rational and consistent approach to sentencing could be achieved by providing legislative guidance as to the factors which should be taken into account in sentence disposition. In most Australian jurisdictions, the legislature has now begun the process of identifying and tabulating relevant factors. In South Australia, the Australian Capital Territory and under federal law, the lists are permissive in the sense that the courts are required to consider such matters in the list as are relevant and known to the court. But in Queensland, Victoria and the Northern Territory, the legislation requires courts to have regard to the matters in the list. In all cases, the lists are open-ended, non-exhaustive and allow other matters to be taken into account. In fact, listed factors represent only a small proportion of those that have been referred to by the courts. The factors are listed in no order of priority or importance and no attempt is made to state whether a particular factor is relevant as an aggravating or mitigating factor

Through the Eyes of Farrar Newberry – Special Collections
Riley-Hickingbotham Library Through the Eyes of Farrar Newberry reproduces all of the newspaper articles known to be written by local historian Farrar Newberry. Newberry’s writings appeared frequently in the Southern Standard and Siftings Herald between 1958 and 1967. This material chronicles Clark County’s history, preserving the stories of the events and people that shaped this area of Arkansas. As such, these articles represent an excellent starting point for local history research in the Clark County area. A wealth of information is to be found among these pages, and much of the material records Newberry’s own recollections. Happy Retirement BILL! By Charlie Olive, Head of Agriculture
If you have ever sat quietly in the barn and listened to Bill talking about how to care for a new born lamb or stood in the greenhouse whilst he explains how to prick out seedlings or watch him lay a hedge or build a stone wall then you will understand why Bill Liversidge will be such a sad loss to the College. Best of all there are quite literally generations of people who have experienced his teaching, even his Granddaughter. After twenty five years of working at the Farm Unit of The West Somerset Community College Bill will be retiring this week. I have only known him for the last five years but in that time I have come to understand and realise why so many people know Bill with such fondness and remember the happy times they have spent at the Farm Unit. Bill can teach anyone because of his calm manner and hypnotising passion for agriculture and all things rural. Over the years he has been involved with many very challenging students who have found that the relevance of agriculture to their daily lives, the outdoor physical work and the way in which Bill explains and talks to them brings some sort of meaning to their lives. There are quite literally hundreds of students working in some form of agriculture all over the world who have been inspired by him.
