MUSIC FROM CUBA THE FESTIVAL INTERNACIONAL CERVANTINO By Ana Cervantes Her Bio Her Email (Ana Cervantes received a Fulbright-Garcia Robles Award, a joint project of the governments of Mexico and the United States, administered in Mexico, by COMEXUS (the COmmittee MEXico-US). She is living and teaching in the city of Guanajuato and will share her views and experiences in a Mexico Connect mini-series, "The Music of Mexico." These articles were written for Classical New Jersey, the journal of the Classical New Jersey Society, and are reprinted here with permission.) Guanajuato is, and has been for a long time, a centre of culture and education. In one way or another, it has always been prosperous, either through the richness of its farmland or its mines. There was the money to support cultural activities and the desire on the part of the rich mining families and hacendados, I imagine, to live a life that included music and theater and the appurtenances of the cultivated middle and upper class. So, for a city that is small by US standards (73,000 inhabitants), it is rich in exceptional performance venues for music, dance, and theater. There is an abundance of museum and exhibit space, as well as in general everyday public living spaces. It seems to me that almost every other street has its small plazuela or at least a little place with a nice bench where you can sit and take a breather. This is partly the European heritage which is so evident in many parts of Mexico, but also due to the fact that many private living quarters, except for those of the fairly rich, are what most middle class US citizens would deem unacceptably small.

Santa Monica Symphony Guest Soloists Born in Puerto Padre, Las Tunas, Cuba on March 1, 1977, Javier Gonzalez, began his music studies at the age of 7 in Havana, Cuba. He won Grand Prize and First Prize at the 5th editions of the "Amadeo Roldan" National Piano Competitions and special mentions for Best Interpretation of the Latin American and Cuban music, and won second prize at the "Ernesto Lecuona International Piano Competition. Javier was awarded the first prize in the best interpretation of Cuban music at the UNEAC '99 Interpretation Competition, and third prize at the "Ignacio Cervantes" International Piano Competition, Nov. 2000 in Havana, Cuba. He has performed internationally in Colombia, Mexico, Jamaica, Barbados, Italy, and Venezuela. Javier arrived in the US on July 15, 2002, and lives in Atherton, Ca. where he attends the Master Program at the SF Conservatory and studies piano with Mack McCray. Imports Before There Was Jazz - 1906 to 1929 CD 7032 Cuban Influences On New Orleans Music Essay by Jack Stewart Many similarities exist between New Orleans vernacular music of the second half of the nineteenth century and the first half of the twentieth century and Cuban vernacular music from the same periods. Taken as a group the danza, the danzon, and the son in Cuba cover roughly the same time period as pre-ragtime, ragtime, and jazz cover in New Orleans. (i) Additionally the same type of debate rages on about the true ethnic origins of Cuban music that constantly surfaces concerning the origins of New Orleans music. (ii) Even though many may not see the similarities between Cuban and New Orleans music at first hearing, they are there. However, one of the biggest problems in seeing them is getting past the differences, which are also there, and perhaps in at least equal number. New Orleans and Cuba both have multi-cultural histories that include some of the same racial and ethnic components-African, Italian, Native American, and Spanish- and they are both part of the cultural system that exists on the edges of the Gulf of Mexico and the Caribbean. However, the Gulf serves to both unify and separate the respective cultures in the same way that the Mediterranean Sea operates with its own particular periferal "cultural confederation." New Orleans, Cuba, Mexico (especially Veracruz and Tampico), Martinique, and others share many, but not all, of the same cultural elements. Also, New Orleans is part of the Mississippi River cultural system as well as that of the United States. Likewise, Cuba is part of the Central American cultural system as well as that of Latin America as a whole.

It was a complete pleasure from start to finish, because Jack is not only a fine composer and musician, but an adventurous and imaginative concert presenter, through the series of his chamber ensemble Orpheus, now in its 22 nd The whole story is too long to tell here, but suffice it to say that this miniresidency was the next step in a long history. It was composer Ramón Montes de Oca who was responsible, in 1998, for introducing me long distance to Jack Fortner, whom he'd met almost exactly ten years before! The only thing left incomplete was that Montes de Oca was unable to be part of the weekend. The concert: Muchas Voces changes yet again, just a little I begin with the Emanuel Bach Sonata which I played several months ago in Guanajuato and in México DF, and follow with the third Partita of JS Bach, my first public performance of this wonderful work. A Brief Overview of Cuban Music By AURELIO DE LA VEGA The history of Cuban music is a vast, intriguing, exciting and occasionally overwhelming fresco. From its nebulous origins to today's universal recognition, Cuban music has grown in stature, and its folkloric and popular aspects have progressively influenced the music-making of other cultures. Cuban music is born from the rich amalgamation of Spanish folk music formulas and African rhythms, the latter brought to Cuba by the black slaves. (A very minor French influence -mainly Rameau-like dance patterns- brought by Haitian slaves and subsequently by white French plantation owners fleeing the slave revolt in Haiti, emerged in Santiago de Cuba, but was soon diluted and amounted to nothing). The phenomenal richness of Spanish folklore, mixed with the vigor of African music, created and explosive and exuberant musical tapestry. If harmonically or formally Cuban music has not invented anything original, melodically and rhythmically it has produced a staggering collection of easily recognizable patterns, which, as stated before, have traveled throughout the planet. White also wrote works for piano, for harpsichord and orchestra, and for string quartet, his fame as a composer resting on a notable violin concerto and on the ever popular La Bella Cubana for violin and piano (later for voice and piano).
