Considering that the Cuban Ernesto Lecuona a.k.a. In the face of these starvation rations, all the more reason to be grateful to BIS for providing us with such a good helping of Cuban . Following on from Thomas Tirino Carole Farley with pianist John Constable tristeza del amor found in many of his most popular numbers, such as ), and a valedictory Conga ( ) to add Afro-Cuban spice to the mix. Some, notably the broodingly sensual are of a depth to move us to tears. Few composers have portrayed the pain of frustrated passion more intensely. provokes doubts that she might be coming on too hard. But though passing years may have reduced the once sinuous soprano to vocal glints and shadows, once Farley settles she focuses her resources to fine effect. Every song brings fresh evidence of high-level artistry in a contemporary style, and as one track tempts us into the next the pleasure deepens. If she does not sing the powerful quite in the manner born to a Rita Montaner or Esther Borja she can simulate it seamlessly, and Constable sounds equally at home. His flexible accompaniments catch that improvisatory air which Lecuona himself brought to his work with Montaner, Borja or

45. PEOPLE-TO-CRONIES CULTURAL EXCHANGES AND THE DEPTHS OF HELL
Cuban pianist Rubén Peláez’ historical CD ignacio cervantes, The Danzas forPiano, recorded and made in the US has been ignored by the reviewers.

PEOPLE-TO-CRONIES CULTURAL EXCHANGES AND THE DEPTHS OF HELL
As Castro becomes even more intolerant and increases his repression maintaining his "socialism or death" mantra, Cubans are astonished by the Clinton Administration’s one-sided "calibrated steps" that are not helping the people living under Castro’s boot. Among the calibrated steps taken in a foolish attempt to appease the Stalinist tyrant are the so-called "people to people" cultural exchanges. In practice, we have seen the fallacy behind these contacts, which fails to materialize on both sides. Recent examples include the Orioles’ game in Havana last March 28 when Castro refused to sell tickets to ordinary citizens. Instead, his cronies filled the 55,000 seats in the stadium. When the Cuban team played against the Orioles in Baltimore on May 3rd, the Cuban players were sequestered preventing direct contact even with the American players, much less the American fans. A huge popular music concert was held in Havana last March with the participation of many US performers. Castro followed the same scheme. Tickets were distributed only among his cronies. So, the much-ballyhooed people-to-people contact in fact did not materialize. The American participants of these events were in contact with government officials – the Cuban baseball players and artists were working for Castro. In a totalitarian society, they have to be proven loyalists of the Castro regime in order to be allowed to participate. Politics is an unavoidable vicious circle in Castro’s Cuba.

JOSHUA EDELMAN Joshua Edelman was born and grew up in Manhattan. He studied at the High School of Music and Art, Manhattan School of Music and New York University. Edelman relocated to Spain in 1980 where he worked intensively as a teacher and performer, travelling extensively throughoutSpain and also touring in Holland, Portugal and Latin America. During the twenty four years that he has been living in Spain he has performed with important figures such as Donna Hightower, Presuntos Implicados, Juan Pablo Torres, Abdu Salim, Perico Sambeat, Manuel Machado, Antonio Serrano, Michelle McCain, etc. As a pianist and composer he combines admirably his classical and jazz training with the passion he feels for the latin music he fell in love with in his youth in New York. Edelman has travelled to various Latin American countries to study the roots of their music. Recently, Joshua along with his latin jazz group "Conexiones" made up of musicians from New York, Cuba, Panama, Spain and Sweden, have just released his fourth CD called "Fusión de Almas" (Fusion of souls). "Fusión de Almas" is an enchanting piece written by the renowned Cuban pianist and composer, Ignacio Cervantes (1847-1905), a "Romance Without Words" which he dedicated to his daughter, María Cervantes (1885-1981), also a pianist and composer. The CD is an explosive blend of Latin Jazz, Classical and Salsa. An excellent communicator and pedagogue, Edelman does jazz workshops apart from teaching in Enseñanza Musical Katerina Gurska and performing with his trio and latin jazz band. His permanent residence is in the center of Madrid.

BEING THE SON
of one of the world's greatest pianists, Chucho Valdés , and grandson of one of the most influential artists in Afro-Cuban music, Bébo Valdés , must be hard. Yet for Jesus "Chuchito" Valdés Jr., it has been a natural evolution guiding him down a musical path very similar to his father's and grandfather’s. At 36, he is the eldest son of a family of five and making a name for himself as a pianist, composer and arranger. "I began studying classical music as a boy," says Chuchito. "When I was 13-14, I decided to put my piano studies aside and play baseball as a pitcher for the Cuban national team for my age group." He dropped the piano briefly but soon returned to La Escuela de Música Ignacio Cervantes to specialize in classical as well as Cuban popular music until graduation. His awareness of jazz rose around the age of 3 to 4 when he heard his father play records by Bill Evans, Erroll Garner and Oscar Peterson, as well as popular Cuban players like Peruchin, Lili Martinez and Bébo Valdés, his grandfather. His first professional jazz stint was at age 16 with Cuban jazz vocalist and trumpeter Bobby Carcasses. From there, he accompanied a variety of popular singers like Pello El Afrikan, the king of the Mozambique style, Anibel Lopez, the sister of Silvio Rodriguez, and Sonido Contempora, a group that included such virtuoso alumni as Gonzalo Rubalcaba, Hilario Duran and others.

Along with his study obligations, Lecuona also manifested an interest in popular music and organized a little orchestra that performed in the first cinemas and dance halls. Nevertheless, in 1916, he left Cuba and moved to New York, where a year later he recorded his fi rst record, which

Starting in 1927, his ideas about the opera entered into a more mature phase: the themes are more articulated, the choral songs are more numerous, and the libretto is no longer a mere succession of songs. With Rita Montaner as the principal performer, Lecuona presented nine pieces, among which were Es Mucha Haban, La Revista Femenina

by Jacira Castro
with assistance from Kevin Moore
Isaac Felipe Delgado Ramírez was born on September 11th, 1962 in Havana, Cuba, the middle child of three. His older brother, Nelson, was a singer, guitarist and composer. Issac studied at the Amadeo Roldán Conservatory with Gonzalo Rubalcaba, where a life-long friendship began. It was Gonzalo who nudged Issac into becoming a musician. I had the opportunity to visit with Issac again, so let me tell you what's up with him! Jacira : Can you tell us a bit about your childhood? Your parents were musicians? Did you ever study music formally? Issac : My father was a tailor, and my mother was an actress in the theater. She was the founder of Las Mulatas de Fuego, an internationally renowned group. Her first husband was Ángel Díaz, the son of Tirso Díaz, a famous troubadour from the "Feeling" movement in Cuba, together with José Antonio Méndez and César Portillo de la Luz. There was always this "Feelingesque" atmosphere in my home!
