In March 2005, Havana will host the 3rd "Ignacio Cervantes" International Piano contest . This musical event is the result of the rich piano tradition begun in the first half of the nineteenth century by Manuel Saumell Ernesto Lecuona , Margot Rojas and continued up this day by outstanding contemporary piano representatives. Ignacio Cervantes , from whom the Contest takes its name, was awarded First Prize in composition and piano at the Paris Conservatory and later he worked as a teacher in that prestigious institution. He developed an intense activity as a compose, pianist and pedagogue, and he is considered the most important Cuban musician of the 19th century. From Cervantes we inherit a transcendental musical work that results from an authentic synthesis of the popular national tradition and of the idiosyncrasy and spirituality of his time, in a language of his own, attached to the codes of style of romanticism. In his forty Dances for Piano marvelous musical jewels, he shows the plenitude of this brief, gracile and concise form, managed with the mastery and elegance of the exceptional artist.

http://www.ignaciocervantes.icm.cu/Ficha-Ignacio Cervantes-2.htm
He is one of the most outstanding composers, pianists and pedagogues of the Cuban 19th century. He was born in Havana on the 31st of July, 1847 and died in this same city, on April 29, 1905.
In 1865 he entered the Imperial Conservatory of Paris. In the French capital he offered concerts and accompanied as a pianist, well known singers such as the excellent Cristina Nilsson, and Adelina Patti. He was admired by outstanding musicians such as Rossini, Liszt and Guonod.
In 1870 he returns to Havana where he begins a laudably function in the artistic and social environment. Cervantes began to create his work when he was very young. In his repertory you can find er music, symphonic music, zarzuelas and opera, but he was well known, above all for his dances for piano in which he gathers the essence of the Cuban. These short pieces, written for two and four hands are distinguished for using rhythmic cells, characteristic of Cuban popular music, and generally, they present a bithematism that permits us to immediately define two contrasting parts. The melodic pattern, at the same time, comes close to the Cuban songs already separated from the Italian operatic virtuosity "Adios a Cuba", "Los Delirios de Rosita", "Los Muñecos", "Picotazos", and "No Bailes Más", among many others are representatives of the Cuban piano repertory and its meaning passes beyond the musical values that each one of them has because they constitute a sample of the schematizing of elements characteristic of the national identity.

He was he first Cuban pianist to play at this famous theater, being honored with his inclusion at Great International Pianists cycle, where the selection is pretty exigent.
This performance took place after the celebration of Marta Argerich Festival. The Cuban artist 's performance followed Kriztoff Jalonsky's (winner of Chopin International Contest in Varsovia). Hereafter his launching far beyond our boundaries, he started to trascend soon after his attendance at Chaikovsky International Piano Contest, in Moscow 1986, where he was bestowed with Six Prize and the Special Prize to Mastery.
last year was prodigal: he offers recitals at the Principal Salon in UNESCO headquarters, in Paris; two performances at Arab Emirates; a concert with Morelia 460 Orchestra, conducted by master Jorge Rivero (Concert in La Minor by Grieg) and another in Music Festival of Vigo Are More, where luminaries for the likes of Teresa Berganza and Vadim Repin performed.
Some artists are pretending to record easy-selling music and it is wrong. The Cuban discography is delayed respecting to the quantity and quality of our interpreters. I also think our CDs prizes are too expensive and it is lacking a appropiate promotion which needs a special emphasis, because this sort of music must have a different treatment, specially after the Buena Vista Social Club phenomena. I'm satisfied with this EGREM's resourcefulness, although I'm not included, I only recorded a CD in Argentina and Bis Music (EGREM's label) edited it some years ago.

CD Liner Notes
One of the happiest days of my life was the day that the Three Wise Men (the Cuban counterpart of Santa Claus), loaded their camels with the gift of my first piano and delivered it to my home. It was a huge old piano, but to me it was the most beautiful thing I had ever seen! I was 6 years old. My parents, despite their humble means, made every effort to pay for my classical piano lessons. As I became more proficient, I began to yearn for more sophisticated musical training outside of Cuba.
Little did we know, as we all cried tears of joy and sorrow, the impending separation from my dear Cuban family would be the end of my life in the Cuba I knew and loved. Neither did I suspect that when I said goodbye to my beloved and teary grandmother at the Havana airport, I would never see her again.
After I finished my studies in Canada and moved to the USA, I felt a burning need in my soul to express myself through the Latin sounds I grew up with, even though I was trained as a classical pianist. My parents were already out of Cuba and we all had relocated to Chicago. Through a series of professional circumstances I began to research Latin and Spanish piano music and discovered why many musicologists acknowledged our folklore as being the richest in the world.

The Contradanza and Danza in Cuba and Puerto Rico
by Elias Barreiro
During the 19th century the contradanza and the danza developed in the Caribbean, particularly in Cuba and Puerto Rico. Developing with it were some of the best composers in Latin America: Manuel Saumell, Ignacio Cervantes, Juan Morel Campos. Many other composers from throughout the Caribbean, Latin America, and South America had success in composing in these same forms.
The origin of the danza is believed to be from England and the word contradanza translates as country dance. However, there is speculation that the danza may have begun in Normandy and then adopted by the English. The contradanza consists of two sections of eight measures which are repeated, for a total of thirty-two measures. The first section is called the paseo or promenade where the people would stroll around the dance floor. The second part is faster and couples would start dancing. This second part is better defined than the first and shows the true character of the danza. The contradanza is written in 2/4 and 6/8 time and belongs to the so-called square dance, a style of dancing where couples collaborate to form diverse figures.
The culture of Cuba is a wonderful mixture of Caribbean, Spanish, and African influences, which provides the foundations of Cuba's music. This created an extraordinary and varied culture heritage from which to draw inspiration, creating a unique and rich setting for music. The city of Havana supported Italian Opera, Spanish Zarzuela, theaters, movies, and military bands providing aspiring musicians many opportunities. Spanish contributions to the music of Cuba are melodic and harmonic while the rhythmic African influence supplies it with its most distinct traits.

A delightful blend of Latin-American and romantic piano sensibilities, of old and new music, Invitation to the Danza represents the eleventh release of new World Piano Music from Viridiana. About The Company: The recordings of Viridiana Productions, L.L.C. represent a grass roots movement designed to promote the new music Terra Verde, as well as various traditions from which it draws. Terra Verde, a contemporary and distinctly American musical art form, fuses elements of European romanticism with New World ethnic styles, such as ragtime, jazz, Latin-American and country. The result is a rich and vital language for our time, and a new stage in the evolution of piano-based composition. Viridiana exists to champion the composers and performers of Terra Verde, and to pay tribute to the innovative and sometimes unheralded forerunners to this exciting new realm of American music.
