Lento, poco allegro
(from Fantasias on East Asian Modes)
Ishmael is delighted to announce the release of his first solo CD, From Ancient Times and Places, made up of beautiful, evocative works by David Loeb, with whom he studied composition. David writes: "The album title reflects the fact that all four compositions draw upon musical or artistic traditions, distant both temporally and geographically. Ishmael Wallace seems a singularly appropriate choice for this collaboration; we share 'antiquarian' interests, and as a composer himself he brings compositional insights to his interpretations. Most of the pieces: Edo Revisited, The Twilight Bell, and some of the Fantasias on East Asian Modes, were composed for him. He has performed all of these pieces, some quite often." or order here for $15 by check or money order.

The ensuing traffic Gilbert casually directed included a climaxing momentum of random sounds presented, in particular, by trumpeter London. Collectively, the remaining members of the Downtown Ensemble ƒ‚ƒ‚‚‚ƒ‚‚‚‚“mannedƒ‚ƒ‚‚‚ƒ‚‚‚‚” their stations so to speak, raising their respective horns up to mouth level on cue. With all members participating in a minimalist and post-minimalist fashion showering of overtones and undertones, the string section began to serve as a layer atop the reeds, as the reeds glided over the brass section in a texturally haunting mode. The string section of viola, three cellos, and bass moved enmasse from bowing to plucking while trombonist, Zummo, filled the leftover gaps. Dufty to Talk with Friends Want to give your San Francisco Board of Supervisors rep a piece of your mind (or a pat on the back)? District 8 Supervisor Bevan Dufty will be the guest speaker at the next Friends of Noe Valley meeting, scheduled for 7:30 p.m. on Thursday, Feb. 10. Everyone in Noe Valley is invited to attend. According to Friends President Debra Niemann, this will be an opportunity for Dufty and his constituents to trade views on a variety of topics. "He'll talk about the revitalization of 24th Street, parking issues in Noe Valley, and cleanliness issues," she says. He'll also field questions about his new "backyard dog" ordinance. Later in the meeting, Friends members will update their efforts to bring more quality groceries and organic produce to Noe Valley. In addition, parents whose kids use Noe Courts park at 24th and Douglass streets will distribute a survey regarding a possible upgrade of the grounds and playground equipment. Rocket Dog Asks for a Boost Rocket Dog Rescue, whose adoptable pups are often seen in front of Zephyr Real Estate on 24th Street, has come up with two ways you can contribute to a new Urban Sanctuary for canines: a cocktail party fundraiser at Terra Mia Ceramics Studio and a High Tea and Crumpet Soiree at Lovejoy's Tea Room.

Artist: GANN, KYLE Title: Long Night Label: COLD BLUE MUSIC Format: CD Price: Catalog #: CB 0019 Cold Blue is an LA-based label, focussing on modern composition in the realms of "West Coast minimalism" and "post-minimalism". Lately it has choosen the medium of CD EPs, (15 to 30 minute short duration releases), allowing the listener to concentrate on singular works w/ o the clutter. It is slowly evolving into one of the most important labels in the history of contemporary American composition. " Long Night is exquisitely drifting, ever-unfolding music for three pianos that sometimes play independently and at other times in synchronization with one another. For this recording, all three piano parts were recorded by Sarah Cahill. Gann calls Long Night 'the most successful piece from my early, Brian Eno-influenced, ambient period, a variable-length piece for three non-synchronized pianos at different tempos.' The composer writes, 'I wrote Long Night very much under the influence of the philosopher Martin Heidegger, impressed particularly by his phenomenology of moods and his disavowal of personality as a unified, linear consciousness. I wanted a piece that was a series of moods, connected neither linearly nor abruptly, but in overlapping discontinuity; and a unity that was not felt moment to moment, but that would leap out in unpredictable motives and reminiscences. These were the days, you know, when ambient music was still soft and unobtrusive. Each piano part is constructed in repeating loops, whose lengths can usually be altered at will by the pianists, and the relationship between the pianos is unsynchronized and aleatory which is why, for a recording, only one pianist is necessary

Michael Byron Album: Awakening at the Inn of the Birds Label: Cold Blue Review date: May. 15, 2003
Tides of Alluring Surprise
There is a dark allure to Michael Byron’s music, a seductive otherness that leads, through fascination, to a gently disturbing ambiguity of emotion. Awakening at the Inn of Birds is a recording of mostly recent pieces, with a focus on chamber music forces: string quartet plus contrabass; piano in solo and duo; some subtle synthesizer textures from Kathleen Supove. There is something of a conversational tone to much of the music here; a conversation that often seems constructed upon whispered questions and their vague and evocative answers. “Continents of City and Love” is a fine opening example of Byron’s experiments. A dark, almost-but-not-quite repetitive undertow of low strings pulls the listener into a gentle trance; two flurrying and shimmering pianos converse over the cantus-not-quite-firmus. Background and foreground, surface and depth keep shifting within the listener’s perception. At nearly fifteen minutes, the piece, like most of the others here, creates its own small but engaging world.

SFIAAFF: Sorceress of the New Piano
The crowd at the Castro Sunday night, at the Asian-Am film fest 's centerpiece presentation for Evans Chan 's documentary Sorceress of the New Piano was about one-third new music aficionados, one-third Asians who'd played piano in the past, and the remaining one-third seemed to be people who thought a woman who played the toy piano would be interesting to learn about. Yup, the toy piano. Like Schroeder Margaret Leng Tan , called "the diva of avant-garde pianism" by the New Yorker , has been exploring the limits of the sounds that can be created by the piano for the last 20-30 years. Tan started out with the standard classical repertoire in her studies at Juilliard , but by the time she began working on her doctoral dissertation there, she was becoming more and more intrigued by the possibilities of the piano beyond the keyboard and more as a percussive instrument in its own right. She worked closely with John Cage on his pieces for prepared piano (where screws, nails, and plates are inserted in the strings of the piano to affect the sound), began playing the works of Menlo Park's
